Caregivers

Wikia - creating communities

The future of the US economy will, to a large degree, depend on a good solution for the largest problem: the runaway cost of healthcare. Telemedicine, telehealth would be great help to solve this problem. The family and informal caregiver can become the one who takes and reports the vital signs of the care recipient, thus lowering the cost of medicine.

Becoming a caregiver can be an overwhelming change. When the situation arises for us to become the person to watch a loved one, it is sometimes planned but often times immediate and not something that we have prepared for. Some of us are sandwich generation caregivers, indicating that we are now watching both our own children and our parents. This added responsibility can often be too much to handle on your own. It is important to remember that there are services and programs available to help you during these trying times.

  • The Department of Health & Human Services' eldercare.gov web site is useful for finding local home and community based services.
  • Sites such as benefitscheckup.org can help you figure out the benefits that your loved one qualifies for in federal, state, local and private programs.
  • govbenefits.gov is an effort of 17 federal agencies that can help you find government assistance programs.
  • An entire section of medicare.gov is dedicated to caregivers in the form of publications and videos.
