Wikia - creating communities

This is a new initiative to encourage edits to help new or quiet Wikia to make improvements. Each month we will feature a specific task on a Wikia and ask all our contributors to visit and help make edits. It doesn't matter if the Wikia is on a subject you know nothing about, the task will be set to be accessible to all and all edits will help. Our first collaboration was in June 2006, with Consumer Information promoted on the main page.

So if your Wikia needs a bit of life breathed into it, and you have a task for the Wikia community, why not make a suggestion below.

To nominate a wiki, please choose one from the list of Wikia and add it to the "nominations" list below, with a comment on why you think it should be chosen.

1. check to see if the wiki is eligible
2. nominate it (if appropriate)
3. make supporting comments of the nomination of your choice

Wikia can be nominated for a number of reasons: The wiki:

• is inactive and could use some more exposure
• has problems and needs some extra users to help with something
• has a specific task that needs more hands

[edit] Eligibility

• Wikis cannot have been featured, either as a featured wikia or as a collaboration of the month, within the past year. (Check the past collaborations.)
• The Wikia must have a prepared blurb.
• The Wikia should be small in terms of recent edits and active community. An active wiki can draw from its own community for tasks instead.
• The Wikia should have a clear main page, showing the purpose of the wiki.
• There should be at least one active contributor with knowledge of the subject and who is willing to coordinate the edits.

This wiki, which is a about a year old, has huge potential but needs people to come and edit it. It needs a lot more articles and all the articles they have to have good general topics. Mainly, they need content. When I found it, I realized i had no time. Now I kind of to, btu I need help.Heradite 28 September 2006.

Although the wiki is a month old, this project existed as a wiki before for almost two years. It was moved to wikia to plug into a like-minded community. It has never had the userbase it needed and with only one real active author left it could use a jumpstart. Birds Wiki needs some help creating articles about species of birds. That is the main purpose of this wiki. There is only one active user that writes articles and edits them, and that is me. I would be happy to coordinate the edits. Birds Wiki needs help!

Deckipedia needs help on, well, everything. Mainly adding content. I hate to see a wiki with potential like this still have under 50 articles. [edit] Encyclopedia of Sid Meier's SimGolf

This is a very new wiki, and it needs a good bit of work. As the founder, I have been working mostly on the MediaWiki section because this wiki is slightly different then most other wikis, and it needs to be customized. It could really be a useful source of information on the antique game created by Sid Meier, it just needs some publicity. It currently has only a few articles, but none of them have anything to do with the subject. They are the ones that come with the wiki.

Collaboration on creating forecasts of the future in various subject areas as well as developing specific futuristic scenarios.

Ways that users can help:

1. Pose a question to our "Oracle of the Future" page to give us ideas of what to write on next
2. Create personal scenarios of what you predict the future will be like
3. Write on topics from Biology and Electronics to Engineering, Sociopolitical, and Spacecraft
4. Explore the Future--Read what others have written (over 250 pages now) and challenge their claims
5. Create futuristic short stories, serials, and novels online

This wiki has just started and needs some major support. If anyone knows a lot about the wiki software and editing, etc. They're needed to help this wiki reach it's full potential of an amazing information resource!

I'm interested in help with encouraging participation from people who already visit this wiki. The wiki is about about journalism, and it has about 100 pages. In the past week, I've had about 100 visits, 450 page visits, and about 20 percent returning, but I've essentially been the only contributor for about nine months.

Rataube suggested more visual and social appeal: "Make a nice-looking main page, build a good community portal, a visit book, a forum, etc."

Since his suggestion, I made a few edits encouraging people to use the community portal. Other suggestions are welcome. And I would coordinate any collaboration. Maurreen 07:31, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

This wiki unfortunately has 112 articles, very few guests, and practically only one active user lately. A good idea is to wikify articles and if you have Mario knowledge, expand stubs and create articles. I created a forum with some topics to work on there. I will be willing to cordinate it. This wiki has about thirty-five articles, but could use more. This is a subject known to many people, so anyone could edit. Monopoly Wiki can become a fun place to learn about the game, Monopoly. All it needs are more users editing, which would happen if it became a collaboration.

[edit] Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Wiki

The MST3K wiki currently has just over 300 full articles and needs more active participants to contribute. About 200 of these articles are about specific articles. The rest are about characters, sketches, running gags and miscellaneous items. There's still a lot of room for growth and we're looking for fans to come add to the wiki.

The Wikia Poetry group is looking for active participants to contribute their works and share a common writing experience, by working around our writing group called the circle and taking existing works and wikifying them by making links out to Wikipedia and other wiki resources, to create a sort of liquid poetry environment. We would very much like to include poets and authors from every background and point of view, and keep things free. All of our works are published under the GFDL liscense. In essense what we are looking for through collaboration is a boost in membership and collective works that will impress anyone who comes across Wikia Poetry.

The Pokémon Encyclopedia is without any active admins, but nonetheless, the contributions trickle in here and there. The collaboration task I'm suggestion is to create all missing articles on each species of Pokémon, which is sadly a fairly large number. RPG Arena is looking for active participants. It is pretty much a gaming wiki. The only user that has had more than 5 edits in the past month is me. The wiki is doing fine but we only have one active participant. We encourage you to spread the word about the wiki and create a character then play. We also need some editors who are good at creating images as most of the articles on the wiki have no image.

Second Life is a virtual reality similar to a MUSH or other roleplaying oriented community. It has scripting and building, and a huge amount of user content. The Second Life wiki is a merger of two existing wikia projects. So why Second Life Wiki, why now? First, because it now has a tool to read wikia inside the game. That means that users of second life can use what you write while they play, which makes it unique. Second, because it's gotten active again, with almost 100 new articles in the last month. What's the project? Like all wikis it could use more articles, but it could also use people who want to help implement an w:c:secondlife:inworld interface to index.php and api.php in Second Life through w:c:secondlife:WikiHUD. This would be a model for making wiki's and metaverses more interactive, and therefore more useful.

The Sonic Wiki is very lacking in content for how long it has been around, and I believe that if it were to get enough contributors, it could rival (or possibly surpass) information found on fansites and Wikipedia. Currently there are only 2 active contributors (including myself), and we need all the contributions we can get. Also, I don't have much knowledge of Sonic beyond the games, and it really could use someone who is knowledgeable of the television and manga series, so we can have a database for all of the episodes and such. Warhammer Online is a MMORPG by EA-Mythic (Mythic made "Dark Age of Camelot"). We (at the moment myself without wikia staff :P) try to collect information about this upcoming game (release date: Q1 2008). Even if the game is not yet active, many sites have tons of articles about it and here is where we need your help. Many pages need expanding (some of them only have a title). Wiksteria Lane is looking for contributors who would be willing to put in effort and time into creating the world's biggest encyclopedia for the ABC hit show, Desperate Housewives. The aim of the wiki is to chronicle every single bit of detail about the show, including full episode synopses, character biographies, themes present in the show, locations featured, the history behind the show itself and so on. This wiki is very small, inactive and has no users. It needs more users to help build up the wiki and so it can be active.

SWGames is a wiki with a lot of potential but has about 7 users to manage everything. SWGames is a wiki about games relating to Star Wars. A few more users will go a long way with us.

• If we had a few more users...
  • It would lighten the load on our overworked users.
  • We would be able to get the merge going faster.
  • It would be a chance to work with new users.

[edit] Symbolism Wiki

The Symbolism Wiki just got started at the beginning of June 2007. It is small, but getting larger. This wiki serves as a guide to symbolism (representation) in literature. We are in need of new users to get this wiki up and running, and to create articles on books and other symbolic items.

Listed below are specific tasks that need to be completed:

• Create new articles
  • GOAL: our goal at Symbolism is to have at least 50 articles by July 31, 2007.
    • Update: The goal has been achieved!
  • Book Articles: articles on books that have symbolism in them
  • Symbolic Items:"things" in books and other literature that are symbolic.
  • Stub expansion: There are many stubs on this wiki, and we need help expanding them.
• Get new users
  • The more people we have contributing, the faster this wiki will grow and succeed.
• New templates
  • We need people that are creative and can create templates for different things.

After one week, 1400 articles (mass imported), ~30 active users and too many edits to count them :-)

We need a lot of help to review the imported tips. This work is mainly formatting and categorizing and can be done by non-experts, so please vote and join in at the Vim Tips Wiki.

I adopted my dream wiki a few months ago and am still the only user and since the adoption I have become increasingly busy. I am at the end of my rope! I need help with:

• Retiring news to end competition with WikiNews.
• Writing and developing the articles about technologies themselves and their past, present and future.
• Making a wide logo.
• Editing and promoting Teklogs.
