Wikia - creating communities

A good reason to use Wikia is that a MySQL database of every Wikia is available for download under the terms of the GFDL.

Note: that Uncyclopedia and Memory Alpha are downloadable as well, but only under a Creative Commons license.

The database is available as an XML dump (this does not include private user data) which can be easily imported into any MediaWiki installation, and which is easily broken down for general processing.

To access the download, go to:

http://wikistats.wikia.com/dbdumps/database name/pages_current.xml

for the current version of every page (the most recent revision for every page),

or to:

http://wikistats.wikia.com/dbdumps/database name/pages_full.xml

for the complete history of every page.

• Note: Database name is usually the domain name of the wikia you wish to reach. For non-Wikia wikis it may be something else, such as 'uncyclopedia' or 'enmemoryalpha'

A list of all downloads can be found at dbdumps.html. This list includes details of when the last database dump was made.

[edit] Backups

Backups of all Wikia databases are saved to a file on the same hardware and copied (automatically) to a second server. Therefore, the backups exist on two different machines. All machines are in the same colocation facility, so it's not quite "off-site".
