The Lord of the Rings wikia includes discussion and information about "The Lord of the Rings": books by J.R.R. Tolkien and derived movies culminating in the 17-Oscar trilogy by New Zealand's Peter Jackson. Started on March 8, 2005, it now has more than 2000 articles and 200 images. It has articles and images featured on the main page, and an active community portal with a project to create articles.

Support

Good points: Subject has spawned hundreds if not thousands of fan sites around the world. So it should have wide appeal. This is where the fans can contribute actively to any page they like instead of being confined to guestbooks. And there's volumes of relevant material on Wikipedia just waiting to be summarised or even (with appropriate documentation) copied.

Bad points: Promoter seems to have lost interest after the first hour of contributing. Maybe the Wikicities managers can email him or her with a wake-up call? But his absence is not noticeable.

Other points: The fact that a keen Wikipedian who works in the same city as Peter Jackson (Wellington), gave it a couple of hours of attention, with categories and other user-friendly devices, and emailed a few obvious Frodo fans about it, is perhaps a neutral point. Updates

  • New contributors evident in mid-June. And aren't we running a bit behind in the promised "Every week, one Wikicity will be featured on the main page"? So how about it, chiefs? Robin Patterson 12:05, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • End of September 2005 sees 166 articles; ; much has been copied from Wikipedia, acknowledged, and improved already. And several contributors have written articles of their own. Here's a comment from one of the new users: "I've just discovered this wiki, and ... I hope I'll be able to help make this site great!"
  • starting to take off with 794 2200 pages now, has some pictures, and quite a few articles with alot of blue links to other articles. Gimli 04:56, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
