Wikia - creating communities

Lately my habbo hotel wiki has been under severe attack by 4chan's /b/. I've been banning as many as possible and protecting the non-vandalized pages. They also nuked Wikia last night in an attempt to shut down the wiki, failing to realize they took out all of wikia in the process. —This unsigned comment is by Thelostcup (talk • contribs). 7chan's /i/ attempted a similar thing at The Gaiapedia once (absolutely failing of course being the reason I'm posting). They attempted a crapflood on our wiki for some reason that had something to do with us either listing 4chan or not listing them in our trolls section which is only related to things that have happened on gaia. I have a bit of a trick for stopping them. The first thing to do is simply reverting all of the edits and deleting the bad pages they have made. A good way to do this is to first pick out all the Useraccounts and IP's that they are using and revert things in the recentchanges until you know what all the IP's and Useraccounts are and all their edits have been reverted. After that, ban all those Useraccounts and IP's which have been used in the mass vandalism indefinately (There is no point in letting a group of vandals have their proxys and bad useraccounts back after a while). (If you are up to what I did, you can also use the delete function to delete all vandalism edits and reverts to make it appear as if they never vandalized the wiki (good for removing the motivation of trolls)).

Now here's the big trick for halting a crapflood in progress. It involves downloading firefox's check4change extension. Open up the recentchanges and highlight from the most recent edit down to the bottom of the edits list (or just the most recent, depending on what works better) then using check4change set it to check every 1, 5, or 15 minutes depending on how persistant they are being at vandalizing. In the customize dialouge turn on all the notifications. Whenever an edit is made the tab will flash, a sound will be made, and a small tip will popup in the lower right. When this happends flip back to the tab with the recent changes. Hit the diff on the edit, if it's vandalism hold ctrl and hit block, then click on revert. The edit will be reverted, and then you can switch to the other tab and block the account used (most of the time they use proxy IP's). Using this method the group ends up losing dozens of Proxys without doing any damage. Which is something that a group dosen't like and is quite effective for stopping them. Another good note, is that tipically these groups post as anons on their own board, meaning they don't know who's posting. If you know where the thread they are grouping in is located, you may also post as an annon pretending to be part of the group, it's a good method of discouraging the group by pretending you are a member who is feeling discouraged at how good the wiki is doing at blocking the vandalism.
