  • [12:08:03] <RR|Neuroscience> It was not the funnest experience.
  • [12:08:09] <RR|Neuroscience> Go on with this meeting.
  • [12:08:10] <Jack_Phoenix> all you need is a little hint of Oversight ;-)
  • [12:08:13] <PanSola> Dashiva: how is Tarapedia doing?
  • [12:08:16] <RR|Neuroscience> PanSola, is Mass Effect Wikia developed?
  • [12:08:28] <Manticore> Sgt_Johnson: hacker, or someone who knows ?action=credits
  • [12:08:41] <PanSola> RR: ME has users, but might not have a cohesive community. I haven't been paying much attention
  • [12:08:46] * RR|Neuroscience nods.
  • [12:08:52] <RR|Neuroscience> I'll see if I'll lend anything to MEW.:P
  • [12:08:55] <Sgt_Johnson> according to himself, it was a hacker manticore
  • [12:08:55] * Joins: hurax
  • [12:08:56] <Dashiva> PanSola: We were admin-less until late november, but we're getting into motion fairly well
  • [12:08:57] <PanSola> thanks
  • [12:09:00] <PanSola> hi hurax
  • [12:09:06] <hurax> hi
  • [12:09:07] <Manticore> yeah, everyone likes to brag
  • [12:09:14] <RR|Neuroscience> credits is an action?
  • [12:09:37] <Manticore> or is it credit?
  • [12:09:45] <Charitwo> oh that reminds me Dashiva
  • [12:09:45] <Dashiva> Just gotta get policy and categories down and we're ready to start the advertising :)
  • [12:09:54] <PanSola> Dashiva: cool. Do the regular contributers on Tara know where to go for discussions on community issues?
  • [12:09:56] <Charitwo> masseffect.wikia really doesnt have a local sysop... only 2 helpers
  • [12:10:45] <Dashiva> No, that'd be part of policy. Right now the community is pretty much me and the other admin's talk pages :)
  • [12:10:52] <PanSola> RR: it'd be great ifyou can help ME out. But don't request sysops until you've been active on that wiki for a full month d-:
  • [12:11:21] <RR|Neuroscience> Why would I request administraotrship?
  • [12:11:29] <PanSola> Dashiva: ok. Hope you guys get that hashed out soon. Anything the rest of us can help with? (suggestions/experience?)
  • [12:11:33] <RR|Neuroscience> :P
  • [12:11:53] <PanSola> RR dunno, maybe you are maschoistic and like to spend longer times typing your resume?
  • [12:12:19] <PanSola> hurax: which wiki(s) are you from?
  • [12:12:41] <hurax> wowwiki
  • [12:12:48] <hurax> and de.wikipedia.org
  • [12:12:53] <PanSola> ah cool
  • [12:12:55] <RR|Neuroscience> LOL
  • [12:12:58] <Dashiva> It's mostly internal stuff... the formatting guide, standard templates, categories.
  • [12:12:59] <hurax> but haven't written much there lately
  • [12:13:00] <RR|Neuroscience> "longer times typing your resume" :P
  • [12:13:14] <Dashiva> You're welcome to start playing and editing though :D
  • [12:13:37] <PanSola> Dashiva: you might be able to borrow some from what Kirkburn has done.
  • [12:13:55] <PanSola> Dashiva: monthly subscription fee model doesn't suit my playing pattern unfortunately
  • [12:14:05] <Dashiva> He's been doing some work already
  • [12:14:12] <PanSola> cool (-:
  • [12:14:49] <Dashiva> We're kinda suffering from the outdated DPL version, but that's a tech issue
  • [12:14:53] <PanSola> anyone else wants to talk about how their wiki has been doing lately? (on an overview level)
  • [12:15:10] * Joins: vagstar
  • [12:15:12] <Sgt_Johnson> its been vandalised... and its going good
  • [12:15:26] <PanSola> yeah staff are waiting to upgrade DPL when they can figure out how to easily update all pages using the old version
  • [12:15:33] <PanSola> hi vagstar, introduce yourself d-:
  • [12:15:36] * Joins: Azul81677
  • [12:15:43] <vagstar> Hi PanSola :P
  • [12:15:51] <PanSola> hi Azul81677, introduce yourself (-:
  • [12:16:08] <Azul81677> Hi, I'm a moderator from the Final Fantasy Wiki
  • [12:16:44] <PanSola> Sgt_Johnson: vandalism from many different ppl (not judged by IP, but by style) means a wiki is getting noticed, so it's a good thing
  • [12:16:50] <Sgt_Johnson> I know
  • [12:16:58] <PanSola> single-individual vandals are just drama though )-:
  • [12:17:29] <PanSola> Azul81677: have you heard anything about the FF10 and/or FF12 wikis merging into you guys?
  • [12:17:40] <Manticore> http://it.halo.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Ipblocklist -- PanSola
  • [12:17:43] <Azul81677> yeah actually I have
  • [12:17:57] * RR|Neuroscience grins at Manty. :P
  • [12:17:58] <PanSola> cool, both of them?
  • [12:18:16] <Azul81677> I'm not sure on FFXII but I do know that the FFX has
  • [12:18:20] <PanSola> ok
  • [12:18:21] <Manticore> epic fail, eh Jack_Phoenix / RR|Neuroscience?
  • [12:18:26] <Jack_Phoenix> hum?
  • [12:18:30] <RR|Neuroscience> Eh?
  • [12:18:58] <PanSola> Azul81677: can you keep an eye on the FFXII articles, see if any existing articles have any sentences/perspectives that can be incorporated into the FF Wiki?
  • [12:19:17] <Azul81677> will do :)
  • [12:20:12] <PanSola> ok, here's the first topic of the week: redundent wiki requests
  • [12:20:35] <PanSola> in November I have noticed a lot of people requesting new wikis when we already have a wiki on that subject
  • [12:20:58] <PanSola> usually teh staff does a good job catching them and rejecting them
  • [12:21:04] <PanSola> especially if what we have is exactly the same
  • [12:21:26] <PanSola> however, there are cases like we already have a Hitman wiki, but someone requests a "Hitman:Bloodmoney" wiki
  • [12:21:46] <PanSola> or we already have Final Fantasy, and someone is requesting Final Fantasy X wiki
  • [12:21:47] <Azul81677> I think that the FFX wiki is redundant
  • [12:22:00] <PanSola> those are harder to catch
  • [12:22:05] <PanSola> because the scope isn't exactly the same
  • [12:22:27] <PanSola> it would help if we gamers all spend time patrolling the requests
  • [12:22:34] <Dashiva> Can't they be solved by having a namespace for specific info?
  • [12:22:49] <Manticore> too much work
  • [12:22:50] <PanSola> Dashiva: depends
  • [12:23:07] <PanSola> Manticore: are you referring to namespace or patrolling requests?
  • [12:23:46] <Dashiva> I haven't looked at Final Fantasy wiki, but I'd imagine they could have a ns for a game's specific info, rather than a separate wiki
  • [12:24:04] <Manticore> PanSola: namespaces. in mosts cases, having a disambig in the title or on the page will suffice
  • [12:24:15] <PanSola> Dashiva: they have game-specific info, jsut not a separate namespace for it
  • [12:24:57] <PanSola> anywyas, it'd greatly help if we can all keep an eye on http://requests.wikia.com/wiki/Request_Wiki:Open_requests
  • [12:25:18] <PanSola> if someone makes a redundent request, comment on it, and invite the requester to join the existing community
  • [12:26:00] <PanSola> because it sucks to ask the founder to fold their wiki after getting it approved
  • [12:26:05] <PanSola> and get them all excited
  • [12:26:31] <PanSola> I'd like to see us catching more of them before they get through the process
  • [12:26:55] * Quits: RR|Neuroscience
  • [12:26:59] <Jack_Phoenix> well, IMO, there's nothing much that we can do...Wikia doesn't really reject requests as often as they should
  • [12:27:15] <PanSola> Jack_Phoenix: I'm working with the commteam on that
  • [12:27:25] * Quits: vagstar
  • [12:27:25] <Jack_Phoenix> cool
  • [12:27:33] <Manticore> Wikia wants more requests, actually
  • [12:27:50] <PanSola> that too, but we want more *non-redundant* requests
  • [12:28:22] <Azul81677> I can't think of any game that doesn't have it's own wiki
  • [12:28:42] <Dashiva> Dice Wars
  • [12:28:47] <PanSola> Azul81677: well, a tone of new wikis are still being created each week
  • [12:29:48] <PanSola> another thing is
  • [12:30:04] <Azul81677> what?
  • [12:30:07] <PanSola> sometimes people will request a smaller-scope wiki even though an encompassing one exists
  • [12:30:29] <PanSola> some people might intentionally *want* to creat an FFX wiki even knowing the Final Fantasy wiki exists
  • [12:30:50] <PanSola> just using FF as example cuz that's the multi-game wiki I know best
  • [12:30:58] <PanSola> if I go to your FFX article
  • [12:31:19] <Azul81677> yeah but why? We give alot of detail to all of our articles. I see no reason for it.
  • [12:31:23] <PanSola> I don't see anything on a FFX walkthrough, or an "FFX Bestary"
  • [12:31:31] <PanSola> (on a superficial glance)
  • [12:31:51] <PanSola> if I bother to scroll down to the bottom, at best I see links to individual character/location articles
  • [12:31:51] <Azul81677> We have FFX walkthroughs but a bestiary.......
  • [12:32:25] <PanSola> (note: I don't nkow if you actually have or doesn't have either, I'm just saying from a visiter's perspective)
  • [12:32:37] * Dashiva whispers "namespace" again
  • [12:32:39] <PanSola> not seeing those being available, and not wanting to challenge your existing structure
  • [12:32:57] <Azul81677> hmmm I see what you are saying
  • [12:33:01] <PanSola> can motivate me to create a separate FFX wiki that can have dedicated walkthroughs and bestary
  • [12:33:13] <hurax> i think a single wiki with different namespaces would be good
  • [12:33:13] <PanSola> so if you have it, try make it more visible
  • [12:33:19] <Dashiva> Relevant to this topic: http://requests.wikia.com/wiki/Ivalice
  • [12:33:27] <PanSola> if you don't, consider maybe using categories (or namespaces)
  • [12:33:30] * Joins: Buffalosoldier92
  • [12:33:54] <PanSola> for Bestairy, you can simply have a [[Category:Monsters in FFX}
  • [12:33:57] <PanSola> or something
  • [12:33:59] <hurax> for all of the final fantasy series and offshots, since you can then look at e.g. the characters who are on different games and movies
  • [12:34:01] <Buffalosoldier92> gah
  • [12:34:07] <PanSola> so like Toneberry can belong to those categories
  • [12:34:17] * Quits: Sgt_Johnson
  • [12:34:18] <hurax> like wowwiki has it for wow, warcraft 2,3, the rpgs
  • [12:34:27] <Buffalosoldier92> what'd I miss?
  • [12:34:33] <PanSola> ah yes, I forgot WoWWiki is also a multi-game wiki
  • [12:34:42] <PanSola> Johnson: howlong have you been gone?
  • [12:34:44] <Kirkburn> Evening all
  • [12:34:53] <PanSola> hi kirkburn
  • [12:34:55] <Buffalosoldier92> 8 minutes
  • [12:35:01] <Kirkburn> Originally WoWWiki was WoW only, but it expanded to cover more areas
  • [12:35:20] <Kirkburn> It made sense as WoW is very much intertwined with the other games :)
  • [12:35:33] <PanSola> johnson: basically I was saying, make content easier to find on larger wikis, so ppl won't be motivated to create a smaller-scopae wiki
  • [12:35:50] <Dashiva> Speaking of multiple wikis, are there any common practices for information sharing between language versions of the same wiki?
  • [12:36:04] <Charitwo> you can share images
  • [12:36:09] <PanSola> Dashiva: not that I know of
  • [12:36:17] <PanSola> it's good to link between each other
  • [12:36:26] <Dashiva> In many games, lots of the content is just pure data independent of language
  • [12:36:29] <PanSola> it's legal to use translated info
  • [12:36:37] <PanSola> (GDFL makes it's ok)
  • [12:36:57] <PanSola> Kirkburn: so if someone goes and make a reqest on Warcraft II
  • [12:37:04] <Dashiva> Yeah, I was thinking if it was possible to have (e.g.) a shared location for template input
  • [12:37:15] <PanSola> saying their WC2 wiki will have walkthroughs, unit data, etc, for Warcraft II
  • [12:37:27] <PanSola> can you comfortably argue that those subjects are already covered by WOWWiki?
  • [12:37:59] <PanSola> Dashiva: you can make the templates use same coding
  • [12:38:17] <PanSola> so you wouldn't need to change the input format. But it's up to the two wikis to negeociate teh common format
  • [12:38:23] * Joins: vagstar
  • [12:38:31] <PanSola> welcome back vagstar
  • [12:38:41] <Dashiva> I'm thinking about the input values. The boss X is located at (x,y) in all languages, so let's keep it in one place for easy maintenance
  • [12:38:43] <vagstar> Hi PanSola :0
  • [12:39:10] <PanSola> Dashiva: you cna try interwiki transclusion. But it's cached and not always immediately update
  • [12:39:13] <PanSola> and randomly breaks I think
  • [12:39:30] <Kirkburn> WoWWiki and WC2: yes, we cover it, but until recently it was somewhat hard to find
  • [12:39:33] <Dashiva> Yeah, I've seen it break a few times on Angela's user page :)
  • [12:39:56] <Kirkburn> Having links to each game covered on the main page really helps
  • [12:41:16] * Joins: Azzt_Rhell
  • [12:41:16] <PanSola> Kirkburn: I don't see it on the main page
  • [12:41:21] <PanSola> hi Azul81677
  • [12:41:33] <Kirkburn> Yeah, er, I don't always practise what I preach :P
  • [12:41:39] <Kirkburn> But there's a "Games" link
  • [12:41:53] <Kirkburn> (which didn't exist until a few months back)
  • [12:41:54] <PanSola> I think because it's named the "WoWWiki", it is especially important for you to make it super obviously noticable
  • [12:41:57] <PanSola> that it covers other games
  • [12:42:14] <PanSola> not only jsut "on the main page"
  • [12:42:15] <Kirkburn> Have you seen requests for other Warcraft wikis?
  • [12:42:22] <PanSola> but "prominently only the main page"
  • [12:42:39] <PanSola> Kirkburn: not yet, but I'd rather be preventative
  • [12:42:46] <Kirkburn> indeed
  • [12:42:52] <PanSola> you'd imagine with a Final Fantasy wiki
  • [12:42:58] <PanSola> ppl wouldn't make FFX
  • [12:43:00] <PanSola> but ppl did
  • [12:43:04] <PanSola> FFX and FFXII
  • [12:43:28] <PanSola> yours is called WoWWiki, so half the ppl aren't gonna bother to even look on your wiki to begine with
  • [12:43:34] <PanSola> for WC2 walkthrough and unit info
  • [12:43:46] <PanSola> you want to make sure you easily catch the attention of the other half who bothered
  • [12:43:52] * Buffalosoldier92 is now known as Lando
  • [12:43:58] * Lando is now known as Buffalosoldier92
  • [12:44:13] <PanSola> and so yeah
  • [12:44:20] <PanSola> similar thing goes for Ace Wiki
  • [12:44:28] <Buffalosoldier92> hm?
  • [12:44:31] <PanSola> and wiki that covers multipel games in a series/franchise
  • [12:44:48] <PanSola> try to imagine the needs of someone who is just interested in one single game
  • [12:44:55] <PanSola> and want a wiki for that one single game
  • [12:45:05] <PanSola> and let your larger wiki cover all those aspects
  • [12:45:14] <PanSola> and make it painfully obvious that your wiki covers all those aspects
  • [12:45:46] <PanSola> that way it's easier to encourage them to join your effort instead of creating a splinter project
  • [12:45:57] <Dashiva> Make the main article for a game title be a portal, not info about the game
  • [12:46:03] * Joins: Tesfan
  • [12:46:09] <PanSola> hi Tesfan
  • [12:46:16] <Tesfan> Hi
  • [12:46:34] <Kirkburn> This is just the kind of time you want Wikia to be slow :)
  • [12:46:39] <Kirkburn> Welcome Tesfan
  • [12:46:50] <Kirkburn> PanSola, I'll see what I can do to make it more obvious
  • [12:46:51] <Tesfan> brb
  • [12:46:55] * Quits: Tesfan
  • [12:46:55] <PanSola> (-:
  • [12:47:16] <PanSola> and everyone, please help patrol requests.wikia to catch redunant requests
  • [12:47:40] <Kirkburn> I don't really have any new news from this week, except that I'm still going round adding extra stuff to the active wikis
  • [12:49:47] <PanSola> ok. Another reminder to go out and vote (or nominate) featured gaming wikia http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Featured_gaming_Wikia/Votes
  • [12:49:58] <PanSola> BlackSite:Area 51 is takign the lead with 5 votes
  • [12:49:59] * Charitwo already voted
  • [12:50:06] <Kirkburn> I still want the meta extension
  • [12:50:17] <PanSola> Pfhorpedia and Ace Wiki are following closely behind with 4 votes
  • [12:50:28] <PanSola> nvind Ace only has 3
  • [12:50:38] <Dashiva> That's about the same voter participation we get at uni elections :)
  • [12:50:42] <Kirkburn> :O
  • [12:50:43] <PanSola> hah
  • [12:51:52] <PanSola> actually Blacksite's admin just place it on New and Notable, so that temporarly disqualifies it to be featured untl January
  • [12:52:01] <PanSola> so Phforpedia is taking the lead at 4 votes
  • [12:52:05] <Dashiva> One thing I noticed when uploading files is that there's no good licence option for "This is allowed for non-commercial use by fansites". The closest is "with specific conditions", but it would be nice to have one more accurate
  • [12:52:07] <PanSola> with Ace Wiki following at 3
  • [12:53:13] <Buffalosoldier92> whoo
  • [12:53:48] <PanSola> and please help write articel on the gaming hub
  • [12:53:54] <PanSola> www.wikia.com/wiki/Gaming
  • [12:54:08] <PanSola> we have 5 articles so far (only 3 gets displayed directly at the hub)
  • [12:54:12] <PanSola> more would be great
  • [12:55:37] <PanSola> anything else anyone want to bring up for discussion?
  • [12:56:21] <PanSola> ok thanks all for coming
  • [12:56:38] <PanSola> please hang around the channel as much as possible to help new founders if anyone hop on to ask questions
  • [12:56:40] <Kirkburn> I wonder how much traffic increases at Xmas :)
  • [12:56:43] <Buffalosoldier92> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxfEC6RfueE&feature=related - my closing statement
  • [12:56:52] <Kirkburn> Also, how many Wikias are gonna do Xmas theming :P
  • [12:57:15] <Dashiva> Redlinks everywhere!
  • [12:57:22] <Jack_Phoenix> http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Wikia_is_plural_of_Wikia ;-)
  • [12:57:22] <Buffalosoldier92> xD
  • [12:57:35] <PanSola> Azul81677: there's a Square Enix wikia too
  • [12:57:54] <PanSola> on one hand you can argue it's an even larger scope wiki than Final Fantasy
  • [12:58:09] <PanSola> on the other hand i don't think this means FF stuff should all go into the SE wiki
  • [12:58:51] <Dashiva> What about the proposed Ivalice wikia?
  • [12:58:52] <Kirkburn> Jack_Phoenix, damn you
  • [12:59:16] <Azzt_Rhell> Jack_Phoenix: It's Wikii.
  • [12:59:19] * Jack_Phoenix really needs to make a script that posts the link every time someone says "wikias" ;-)
  • [12:59:23] <Azzt_Rhell> XD
  • [12:59:24] <Kirkburn> Wikiae?
  • [12:59:27] <PanSola> it's Wikid!
  • [12:59:31] <Kirkburn> egad
  • [12:59:37] <Azzt_Rhell> Wikii!
  • [12:59:38] <Buffalosoldier92> what is the verb form of wiki?
  • [12:59:39] * Kirkburn throws PanSola off a cliff
  • [12:59:40] <Buffalosoldier92> wikied
  • [13:00:07] <Dashiva> wikiae
  • [13:00:14] <Dashiva> Go latin1
  • [13:00:16] <PanSola> Dashiva: I'd say it should go under teh FF wiki
  • [13:01:20] <Dashiva> But Ivalice is also part of Vagrant Story
  • [13:01:37] <PanSola> ah
  • [13:03:40] <PanSola> Vagrants Story is covered by FF as an "unofficial adopted final fantasy game"

  • [13:49:29] <PanSola> Azul81677: the chat is over, but I have some FF-relate stuff I want to talk to you about
  • [13:49:51] <Azul81677> sure what is it?
  • [13:50:06] <PanSola> on the "larger scope vs smaller scope wiki" thing
  • [13:50:13] <PanSola> there is a "Square Wiki"
  • [13:50:13] <Azul81677> oh OK
  • [13:50:17] <PanSola> for Square Enix stuff
  • [13:50:21] <Azul81677> yes I know
  • [13:50:28] <PanSola> now, "technically" it'd count as a larger scope wiki
  • [13:50:41] <Azul81677> but....
  • [13:50:46] <PanSola> but I wouldn't argue teh FF wiki should be folded into them the way FFX should fold into FF
  • [13:51:04] <Azul81677> hmmmm
  • [13:51:19] <PanSola> otherwise in teh end everything is gonna fold into a generic Game wiki
  • [13:51:30] <PanSola> which will fold into a generic "Things you do for fun wiki"
  • [13:51:56] <Azul81677> right so
  • [13:52:01] <PanSola> my believe that FF Wiki should not fold into the Square wiki leads to 2 things:
  • [13:52:21] <PanSola> 1. Is there an easy way to throttle the folding?
  • [13:53:01] <PanSola> ie, how can we prevent our rational for keepin FF separate from Square used for keeping FFX separate from FF
  • [13:53:13] <Azul81677> you should take this up at the forums on the site
  • [13:53:19] <PanSola> whose?
  • [13:53:27] <Azul81677> nevermind
  • [13:53:49] <Azul81677> I meant the FFWiki site
  • [13:53:55] * Parts: Buffalosoldier92
  • [13:53:57] <PanSola> k
  • [13:54:04] <Azul81677> CSM (Admin) should know what to do
  • [13:54:39] <PanSola> another thing is I'd like to encouarge articles about Square Enix (including humans working there) to primarily reside on the Square Enix wiki
  • [13:55:05] <Azul81677> yeah we have a big problem about that
  • [13:55:14] <Azul81677> like Chrono Trigger articles
  • [13:55:29] <PanSola> and let the FF wiki focus on the games
  • [13:56:38] <PanSola> also there's a request for an Ivalice wiki
  • [13:56:59] <PanSola> I've made a comment strongly hinting the contributor should just help the FF wiki on Ivalice-related articles
  • [13:57:21] <PanSola> but you might want to think about the needs of ppl interested in Ivalice as a world in itself
  • [13:57:38] <PanSola> and do some article structuring that mgiht better satisify those needs
  • [13:58:41] <PanSola> so htey won't insist that "the FFWiki is organized in a way that doesn't work with how I want Ivalice-related informationto be presented"
