[edit] Introduction
A new calendar feature developed by Wikia has recently been installed.
You can activate it on your wiki by typing <calendar /> on any page.
When you've saved the page, you'll see an "add an event" link which takes you to a form to create the event, which will be saved as a page on your wiki and will appear in the calendar.

- I got the following error, when i try save a new event:
Fatal error: Call to a member function getPrefixedURL() on a non-object in /usr/wikia/source/wiki16svn/extensions/SpecialAddEvent.php on line 102 --Dob 19:07, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
I attempt to add an item the scratchpad calender for 2008/01/01 title "Sleep" with the contents "See title" and I get an error message of
I get the error as Anon user and having logged in. MatthewS 19:09, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- Matthew: The name of your event becomes the name of a wiki page (on which you can describe the event). You must already have a page called Sleep. If I read the description above more carefully I can see it's right there, but this was not obvious to me at first either, when I created my first event. Angela: I like this feature! And the introduction was very timely. I was just looking at a submission for the Solar Cooking Wiki that contained a course announcement. --Beth Ogilvie 19:31, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
- I've just been trying to use this new feature at sca21:Sandbox, and tried to put in an event for which a page already exists on the wiki. Am I missing something ? - The only way I could figure to get it in was to rename it creating a new page and then redirect the new page to the old one? The category created seemed to come out wrong - seemed to come out as 'UK' even though I seem to be putting it in as 'UK events' (?) (which I then manually readjusted). Wonder if it isn't a little constricting in that there doesn't seem to be a way of making obvious via a page title that an event may last several days (i.e. title won't always have 'week' in it , etc. (?) (and is good and helpful to be able to identify a date as a particular day of the week). Any way of getting pictures in for each month ? e.g. see sca21:Diary UK Philralph 13:24, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- If the page already exists, don't use the AddEvent link. Instead, type [[Category:Events|2007/02/20]] on the page. Angela talk 17:01, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- That seems to work OK for 'Category:Events', but still doesn't seem to work for Category:UK events Philralph 17:47, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

It would be nice that sysops could change and translate the text that appears in the calendar and all other related messages, including the name of the category "Events", like other extensions editing Special:Allmessages (captcha, cite and wikiasearch implement their own messages) --Ciencia Al Poder ¿Algo que decir? 19:37, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

- You can edit the interface messages for this feature. The messages aren't showing up in Special:Allmessages yet, but they can be edited. I've added the list of pages you need to edit at Help:Calendar. Angela talk 22:07, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Efficiency
I feel the calendar would be much more efficient if new events could be created without necessarily creating new articles; like just a list of upcoming events. This current system undoubtedly will make a whole lot of short (sometimes 1-line) articles for Wikis, which seems unnecessary. --LordTBT Talk! 20:41, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Perhaps putting them in their own namespace would help? They'd still be short, but so are most pages in the template and mediawiki namespaces. At least that way, you could filter them out from recent changes and new pages listings. Angela talk 20:45, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Well using my current methodology for upcoming events as an example, you can see that upcoming events for me are barely 1 sentence a piece. I just feel creating an article for each thing would waste people's time if they were to click them. I know I don't *have to* use the Calendar feature, I'm just trying to think of ways to make it better for us small event Wikis. --LordTBT Talk! 20:51, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Had an idea. Currently, "Add Event" is what creates the listing and the article. Maybe another button for "Add a listing" that works similarly without creating an actual article, but still lists the event on the calendar. Or perhaps on the "Add Event" page there could be an option to make it a whole article, or just a listing on the calendar. --LordTBT Talk! 21:11, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- I understand the advantage of that, but it would basically be a completely different feature, and not one we can prioritize right now since there are lots more new features that need our attention. Perhaps just using a standard wiki page is better for you instead of the full calendar extension? Angela talk 21:26, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
