Hello question please: Why is "wikia.com" using GFDL? Only because of copying from Wikipedia? Are there also other reasons? Greetings from North Tyrol (europe). j--Uptojoe 06:46, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- GFDL does not really permit copying without concern of the original author's copyright who is always retained. So copying is not even a good reason.
- GFDL permit commercial usage and Wikia is commercial. It's a bussness..
- Another exemple : Maybe you dont know the game Guild Wars, but it's not so important. The compagny that produce that game (ArenaNet) decided one day that a wiki was a marvelous thing. There was already GuildWiki for a few years and it was the best source of informations all done by the players. But Guild Wiki license was (and still are) CC-BY-NC-SA and the compagny of the game could not decide to take GuildWiki under her wing (like hosting it and linking to it in the game) because of the Non-commercial aspect of the license. So they had to start a new one under GFDL.
- So, GFDL give more freedom to people who could like to make a profit with the content somehow.
- I would choose GFDL for every wikis i would create outside Wikia if i could create some. But i choosed CC-BY-NC-SA for some of my personnals website (and some other work) of wich i dont want people to profit from. — TulipVorlax 18:06, 19 October 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for answering my question! Greetings j--Uptojoe 15:33, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
- Wikia is GFDL because the company was started by me and Jimmy Wales and we are both very strong believers in the Free Culture movement which Wikia is part of. It's far more important than simply enabling works to be shared with Wikipedia; a Free License gives everyone the freedom to use, edit, and share the content for any purpose. Angela
