Wikia - creating communities

Wow, documentation that actually makes sense! What a refreshing change from my past week wading through the MediaWiki site's Help jungle. Just one thing though... how do you create a new Category, and how do you add pages to a Category or namespace. Finally, is the index for each Category created automatically? Many thanks in advance. [edit] Categories

Create a new category (after carefully checking the list of existing categories in case there's one that will do) by adding a link to it (near the bottom, preferably) on any page (article or category) you want it to contain, eg . Then add a parent category and/or other text so as to make the category visible (when it will display automatically its subcategories and articles, in alphabetical order of pagename except where you have added something after a pipe, eg lists under "D" and lists at the start - useful if the article is something general such as "List of writers"). • Excellent. Got it... except for this: "Then add a parent category and/or other text so as to make the category visible..." Maybe you could, as Denzel once said, "Explain it to me like I'm a four-year-old." Thanks again.
There's a challenge!!! (Some of us hope you will soon remember to sign all your posts to Talk pages!) --- Click the new category link. An empty edit box will open. Type either a dot or something more useful, such as: This category includes all writers. ).

 • Oh, yes of course. For those who wish to marvel at my wiki ignorance, my username is WikiDontLoseThatNumber (a shameless play on creative from the once-recognized-as-amazing-and-mysterious Steely Dan). Indeed, I invite all to extract whatever entertainment value may be harvested from my inability to grasp what surely must be a simple concept. And, in furtherance of my gourd-like qualities I submit the following:
 • I have easily created a new category - thank you. However, after creating the FOOD category, I imagined the wonder of having subcategories and ventured to add a FRUIT subcategory. I thought to add this nonexistent category by making a link and clicking it. However, my link, failed to appear for the requisite clicking. Discouraged, but trudging forward, I lowered my sights to a document called FRUIT and attempted to create a link for this in the form . Yet, as I'm sure everyone else already knows, it too would not appear for clicking. Since I would ideally want to do both, create subcategories in my catogories and pages inside both the categories and subcategories, I was doubly discouraged. Additional insights here are most welcomed. (Please note that the real category names have been changed to protect the innocent.) WikiDontLoseThatNumber

[edit] Namespaces

Create a page in a particular namespace by having the appropriate wording before a colon, eg MediaWiki:blahblah. A simplification is available in the "project" namespace (the one that usually contains the Wikicity name or variant), where you can replace that prefix with "project:" and the software converts for you. [edit] Custom namespace tabs

If I want to change the forum namespace tab to "topic", how do I do? I've seen this at Desciclopédia (which is not a Wikia wiki. I searched in their system messages, but I didn't find it.) – Smiddle 19:42, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Try Nstab-forum. --Kernigh 22:02, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, didn't find that. – Smiddle 13:20, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
