Our humble janitors help keep Wikia looking its best.

Janitors are Wikia users that help to keep everything tidy across Wikia. Janitors have the same abilities as administrators, but on all Wikia wikis, and a few extra specialist tools for jobs that need to be done across the site. Janitors do not replace or "outrank" admins; the local community and the local admins are responsible for their wiki, but janitors can help with cleaning cross-Wikia spam, reverting vandalism on quiet or inactive wikis, and can give help and advice on using the advanced features of the wiki.

[edit] Overview

Janitors are...

  • users who are involved with the Wikia community in general, not just one wiki,
  • users who are trusted to use admin tools to clean up and prevent spam and vandalism across all Wikia projects,
  • able to fulfill many of the duties of Wikia staff, when a single project needs help,
  • able to track cross-wiki spammers, block them, and dispose of their garbage.

[edit] Current Janitors

GHe was one of the first Wikia users to be made a Janitor. Joining Wikia in early 2006, he became a Janitor in July, 2007 and has worked dutifully in this position since. Likewise, GHe is quite active on Central Wikia and Inheriwiki.
Jack Phoenix joined Wikia in July 2006, and contributed to various wikis before being made a Janitor in October, 2007. When Jack Phoenix is not cleaning up spam across Wikia, he is active on Central Wikia and Uncyclopedia.
Greyman is an experienced wiki editor, and joined Wikia in January of 2007. He was made a Janitor in late January, 2008. He enjoys helping new wiki-communities in many respects, and when not helping keep Wikia clean and proper, can be found on Central Wikia and Wookieepedia.
Image:wiki_uber.png Uberfuzzy joined Wikia in June 2007 with the import of EQ2i. After a brief stint as a Gaming Team Helper from Jan to Apr (2008), he was transfered to the Janitor Squad in May. He is still active in various gaming projects, but is primarly active as an admin at his home wiki of EQ2i. Aside from but janitor work all over Wikia, he is often found fixing Problem Reports and finding bugs for the Staff.
Jaymach joined Wikia in October of 2005, and was made a Janitor in May of 2008. Having contributed sporadically to various wikis in the past, he is currently primarily active on the Stargate and Star Wars wikis, though he also religiously monitors the White Wolf wiki. If seen editing anywhere else, he is likely helping to clean up vandalism or considering expanding his Wikia experience.

[edit] Janitorial Policy

This is a maintenance role and janitors do not have any say over local content or policy discussions. Janitors should respect local policy even if it is different from a typical Wikia, and seek staff opinion if necessary.

[edit] When to take action

This user right is only to be used:

  • for obvious cross-wiki vandalism cleanup
  • for vandal blocking if no active admin is available locally
  • for obvious spam (cross-wiki spambot cleanup especially)
  • when community or local admins request help (editing interface messages, banning trolls if no admin available)
  • when the Wikia Community Team requests help with cross-wiki janitorial tasks
  • for an emergency edit to broken/crippling interface messages (such as a javascript, stylesheet, or interface message causing the site to be unusable)

[edit] General rules and guidelines

  • Always be polite.
  • Use clear edit summaries without jargon.
    • Overwrite the 'content was:' auto-edit summary text on deletion with 'spam' or another summary, so that abusive content doesn't show up on recent changes and in the logs.
    • Manually revert edits by abusively named accounts so that the names do not appear in auto-edit summaries in logs.
  • If a local administrator reverts you, do not revert back. Seek a staff opinion.
  • Communicate! If in doubt about whether an action would be welcome, or if someone objects to your work, use the user talk pages, Community Portal, Forums, or Main Page talk to discuss the issue in a polite and friendly way. Establish how much help the community does or does not want for the future.
  • Remember, local tasks are for local admins. Unless a wiki is inactive, there are no current admins, or you are asked to help, then let the local admins do their job. This is especially true of large wikis with an established admin group.

[edit] Wikia community policy

  • Please do not block janitors (except in the case of automated edits or broken bot scripts). If a janitor is acting against local Wikia policy, simply ask them to refrain from editing. If there are continuing issues, contact a staff member.
  • Janitors are just there to help. Please be courteous.
  • Some (or all) janitors can be removed from your wiki if there is clear consensus to do so. This would limit their ability to clean up cross-Wikia spam and vandalism, so should be limited only to very large projects with many active administrators (such as Wookieepedia or Uncyclopedia).
