Wikia:Press: Memory Alpha joins Wikia

Wikia - creating communities

(Redirected from Memory Alpha joins Wikia)
Jump to: navigation, search

Wikia would like to welcome to Wikicities all users of Memory Alpha, the free Star Trek wiki.

On February 9, 2005, the founders of Memory Alpha, Harry Doddema and Dan Carlson, announced a server move and Memory Alpha was transferred from its former hosting at MyOO to Wikia's servers.

In January 2005, the total amount of bandwidth transferred over Memory Alpha's account was 55 gigabytes, three times more than the previous month, reflecting nearly 7 million hits, and 240,000 visits. The costs involved in hosting such a massive site proved prohibitive at this stage, and the founders made the choice to move to free, advertising-supported, hosting at Wikia.

The goal of the project remains unchanged; to become the largest, most reliable, and most up-to-date encyclopedia about everything related to the Star Trek universe. Aside from the brief interruption of service as the database is transferred, Wikia hopes that the Memory Alpha community will not undergo any other problems relating to the move. Changes users will notice will be the introduction of a sidebar of advertisements served by Google, and the fact that their user accounts will now work on both Memory Alpha and Wikicities.

Memory Alpha will not officially be a Wikicity, since it is hosted on a separate domain, and released under a Creative Commons license rather than the GFDL. However, single login is now in operation across all Wikicities and Memory Alpha, allowing users to easily move between the communities and edit a range of wikis more easily.

Wikia would like to thank Harry Doddema, Dan Carlson, Erik Möller and Jason Richey for their work on ensuring the move to Wikia was as smooth as possible for the communities concerned.

If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints, please feel free to discuss them at Memory Alpha.

For more information on the project, please read about Memory Alpha and the history of Memory Alpha.
