Newskin
Wikia - creating communities
Using your feedback from the survey (here and here), we've created a new skin for Wikia to make things cleaner and simpler. Keep reading to learn about the changes.
We went from a three column to two column layout
We felt it was important for the content to be the focus of the page so we moved it front and center, and moved search and toolboxes to the right hand side, where the text ads used to be.
We have a new logo!
We are also releasing a new logo. The current wikia logo was a remnant of our old Wikicities name, and while we love this logo and hate to see it go we are excited to move forward with a new logo that represents the Wikia brand.
Navigation is more organized
We've gone through and taken all the core tools and links everyone uses the most and put them together on the page in three toolboxes menus right next to the content. We've added graphical images and emphasized certain core actions and to help new Wikians better find their way around.
New ideas for bringing in more people!
Strong feedback from the survey said you wanted us to find a way to get more people to read and participate! You'll notice on the top that we have links to entice people further into the site. We're going to be doing a lot of testing to figure out what works here to increase both readers and writers. We'll have more info for you as we see what people do.
How does this affect you?
We're making sure to take your preferences into account. If you are a registered user, then whatever skin you currently have as a default will stay the same. In most cases this will be Monobook. So when you come to the site and login, you'll still see your familiar wiki look. If you want, you can go into your preferences and use the new skin at any time.
New people coming to Wikia will see the new skin but there will still be an option in the top right to use the original Wikia look. That way, anonymous contributors can still choose to use the original Wikia look if they want.
For Logged-in Users
Logged In users will also get
- Smaller ad in the top right
- Ability to reposition or close the boxes (and add new ones that you like). More on this later.
