[edit] The Controversy

Is there a difference between Fanon and Fan Fiction? Many users have asked that same question when it comes to Fanon and Fan fiction. So what exactly is it? Some say that Fanon is another way of saying Canon and so it is different from Fan Fiction which is defined as not-canon friendly. Others would say that there is no difference in the two. So who is right?

[edit] What are they?

Below are some arguments for the idea of either Fanon and Fan Fiction being separate, Fanon and Fan Fiction are the Same, or Both. All of these sections have what each side is saying about what Fanon and Fan Fiction are.

[edit] Fanon and Fan Fiction are Separate?

Fanon is consistent with canon, and supplement additional information that canon does not provide. Fanon is just another way of saying that it follows what canon says. Fan Fiction article is something that has people that don't want to follow what canon says and go God-modding.

[edit] Fan Fiction and Fanon the Same?

The word Fanon derives from the word Fan Fiction, meaning fiction. Fiction is defined as something that is the opposite of truth and thus can't follow what the truth is. People come up with the terms God-modding in order to make Fanon and Fan Fiction sound like they're polar opposites.

[edit] Both?

The last of the ideas say that there is no way for people to truly tell what is the truth, it's really up to the community to decide what's truth and what's not. This third category of users say that both sides are right and wrong about the definitions. So again, what's the truth?

[edit] What's the Truth

There is no real way to show what the truth is. Basically it's a belief system. As you know from what beliefs are, that there is no proof for either side to really support what they are saying and thus both are right and both are wrong. So it is up to you to decide which side is the truth and which sides are wrong. Remember that the truth is in the eye of the beholder.
