Wikia - creating communities

[edit] Change of Scope
Based on the discussion which was taking place on the community portal (see copy in box below), I propose that the Cities wiki become a broader wiki -- one about cities. Some cities may generate their enough interest to creat their own wikis, but this revised Cities wiki would be a place for discussion about cities - comparisons, tourist information, favorite hangouts, etc. This change of scope will also be proposed on cities:. We can start and see how it goes. In other words, I'm planning to adopt the cities wiki with a broader purpose.
[edit] CitiesI'm wondering if it would make sense to have a wikicity for cities? Founders willing to start up a wikicity specifically for one city could still propose it, but this wikicity would allow for places with less content or comparisons between cities. Like some of the city wikicities already created, it would have information for visitors as well as for locals. Please see the discussion under Proposed Wikis - Huntsville. --CocoaZen 21:44, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Originally the Cities Wikia (Towns, Villages and Cities) was for people to share information and discuss ways for people to improve their villages, towns and cities. This is not a place to discuss politics. Typical discussions may include ways to adapt downtown areas to survive malls and giant retailers, making communities more citizen-friendly, revitalizing economically-challenged areas, and other issues that affect our communities.
The scope is now broader. --CocoaZen 00:35, 12 Aug 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Huntsville (from proposed wikis)
Hi! I'm wondering if there's enough interest in a wiki around Huntsville, AL, USA?
I grew up mostly in Huntsville and saw that Jimbo was born there.
So, I'm curious whether there is enough interest, and if we should have a virtual city about a real city? ;-) (Yes, I'm aware that we already have a few wikicities for cities, just checking about this one.)
It could have information for people who are going to visit or live there. Because of Redstone Arsenal and the NASA program, many people pass through, and some stay. According to the Wikipedia, over 150,000 counted in the 2000 census. It could also be a way for people who have lived there to stay in touch.
Opinions?

- I just figured I would let you know what my experience is about creating a city wiki. I started the Calgary wiki just over a month ago. Other then when I am out of town, I have made a point to add some content every day. I have let a number of my friends know about it, and many are excited about the concept. However, very few have done anything other than poke around to see what I have done. And Calgary is a city of about one million people. So, my advice to you is to be prepared to put in some time before it takes off. -- JamesTeterenko 18:56, 20 Jan 2005 (PST)
- FWIW I'm a native Huntsvillian... dunno how much info I could contribute that would be of interest, though. PhilipR 01:25, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
- Hello. I am another Huntsville-ite. I like this idea. I like Wikipedia and I know a lot about Huntsville. You could put such information as local bands, local landmarks and parks, various places of note... the history of Huntsville, a list of all the Mayors of Huntsville, what they did, that sort of thing. --Travlr23 10:46, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Would it make more sense to have a "cities" wiki? For all cities? We could have information for visitors and locals (favorite spots, etc.). Encyclopedic information would still go to Wikpedia:, but this wiki could have personal opinions, comparisons and other things that aren't really appropriate for an unbiased neutral point of view site like the wikipedia. Several cities already have their own wikicity (including Calgary, Boston, Berlin, San Diego, Luxembourg, Nagasaki, for others see category:places).
- There's a common misperception that wikicities is about cities. I don't think that would be helped either way, because the people who post about cities here in the Central Wikia probably don't read much about the purpose or guidelines first anyway, but this might provide a place to migrate that data.
- Opinions? Huntsville only or all cities (taken broadly to include villages or towns too)? I plan to propose one or the other, but would like feedback or suggestions about which is more appropriate.

- I favor the regional approach myself. For better, for worse, few cities actually exist in isolation. Regional center that they may be, they could never exist on their own. --69.109.181.26 03:24, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Resolution:
The Cities Wikia has been adjusted. It was for certain types of community improvement, now it's got a wider scope about cities. Content about Huntsville is being created there. Your contributions about Huntsville and other cities would be welcome! --CocoaZen 01:52, 12 Sep 2005 (UTC)
Half a dozen cities now have pages on it, and there's a list showing them and linking to the separate "place" wikicities. Robin Patterson 05:09, 6 Oct 2005 (UTC)
