[edit] Moved from Proposed wikis

I've applied today for a wiki with this name, I thought I would give some more information here and see what existing wikicities people think.

Time For Public Space is the tentative name for a community project to make a list of clocks in public spaces, using web mapping and other web-based collaborative tools. The initial purpose of the project is to locate all the public clocks we can, and "tag" them spatially and with other data using the amazing Tagzania. In the long term, there are technical innovations that could be made: it would be interesting to use data from other projects like Open Street Map so it would be possible to record streets that have been surveyed for clocks, and so way to link photos would be great. From a social/urban/architectural perspective, there's lots that could be done with a directory of public clocks and interesting directions to go with that information. And most importantly, collecting and locating clocks is fun.

So what purpose would the wiki serve? Since the actual tagging and geo-locating of clocks is taking place in services like Tagzania, the wiki won't be the storage location for any data. Instead, it will be the location where we introduce the project and explain how to take part. It'll be the place where technically-minded clock collectors thrash out protocols such as how to tag the clocks, discuss ways to incorporate photo data, and nurture all the potential off-shoots that might emerge from gathering this information. It might turn out that people interested in public clocks are rare, and this project goes no-where. But I think it's worth trying.

I hope this is enough information to justify why the wiki belongs here - but feedback woudl really be appreciated. In the meantime, you can see all the clocks added so far on a map or in a list (both via Tagzania). Please log in and add some - our username is clickclock and so is the password. So far the clocks we have are all in Europe, mostly England. Would be great to get some from elsewhere. Frankh 14:04, 4 Aug 2005 (UTC)

Angela from Wikicities pointed out that Clocks would make a much better project title than timeforpublicspace since the purpose would be clear from the title. frankh 18:38, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)
Now exists at clocks.wikicities.com. Angela (talk) 23:34, 9 Aug 2005 (UTC)
