Wikia - creating communities

This is a bit of a mess. We have

Not to mention the overlap with Software in English and Polish, Softing in Czech, School Computing in English, both Open Source and Open Source Software in English. Or even web, design and web design. And Computing Knowledgebase and TechCompare...

It's getting difficult to know which wiki to suggest to people when they request a similar one. Inez just moved Russian programming to Russian computers (though perhaps that should have been computing). Do any others need to move to be consistent, or should we just do something with these description pages? Angela talk 15:43, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I think the first think to define is what is the difference between "computing" and "computers"? And could there be a better way of naming them so that distinction is clear? Then we could decide which wikis fitted with which, and combine the description pages. I don't think there is a problem with having different names for differnet languages as such, as long as it's clear what the general areas of each wiki are. And organising the English wikis seems the best first step. "Computers" sounds pertty much the same as "hardware" (although I'm not sure the content reflects that). "Computing" sounds more general. So perhaps there should be "computing", "hardware" and "softtware"... or is that too much crossover? -- Sannse 16:11, 21 November 2006 (UTC) (sorry, that was the wrong account)

Yeah, I totally support pushing all of these concepts together into one concept, and having one site per language for the whole thing. Certainly having Computing and Computers and Programming as separate wikia in English is confused. Those are all separate portals or sections of the same site, I think.----Jimbo Wales 22:47, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
