[edit] Suggestion: Wikicity of the Week
(Moved from Talk:Wikicities)
Since many Wikicities are relatively inactive, and could use some more exposure, I suggest featuring one Wikicity every week on the Main Page. What do you think? This could be done by community vote, or simply by the Wikicities staff based on what wikis are in need of attention.--Eloquence 07:00, 14 Feb 2005 (GMT)
- Somehow "hey, check out that blank wiki, it's the award winning wiki of the week!" just doesn't sound like a good idea to me. I think the best idea is to link to wikis that have a good base built (or at least, almost built) and some content. A starting point and a bit of a "standard" would help stop shyness and encourage editing. Perhaps a "Wikicity of the week" as well as a "Babywiki of the Week", where the babywiki would be the one needing a base and some nurturing. --Me at work 07:08, 14 Feb 2005 (GMT)
- I like the idea of distinguishing between wikis featured for their content, and those featured because they have no content.--Eloquence
- We already feature the newest on the main page, and the most active + few newest on recent changes. The blog highlights the more active wikis as well. If a wiki is completely empty, I'd rather just close it than encourage people not really interested in it to go there. Angela 14:26, 14 Feb 2005 (GMT)
- Sometimes we may need to just let a wiki die a natural death. If the founders and users can't get participation, maybe it's just not an idea whose time has come. Or maybe they need to figure out other ways to advertise to the target audience.
On the other hand, "featured wikis" sounds like a good idea. It might be too much work, but maybe "awards" for a variety of things - best support for newbies, fastest membership growth, most creative use of categories, best new templates, best use of... An explanation of what a particular wiki did well could help the rest of use incorporate good ideas into other wikis. --CocoaZen 19:09, 14 Feb 2005 (GMT)

- I like the idea, but I'm worried the same few wikis would win it every week, unless we choose to not re-feature a wiki that had already won. See Featured Wikicity for a page with some of the above ideas on. Angela
- Suggestion to that: no Wikicity can pick up that award for more than once in a six-month/one-year period. --DavidFeng 12:39, 15 Feb 2005 (GMT)
- I agree. If a Wikicity has already been featured then they will remain in the Featured Wikicities list for others to see. As long as you direct people to that list for further guidance (perhaps with a short summary of why they were featured?) then there is no real need to feature them again. ----GreenReaper(talk) 12:49, 15 Feb 2005 (GMT)
[edit] Update?
Is this ever going to be updated? There hasn't been a featured Wikicity in months now. — Imp 14:41, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe the Fiction Wikicity could be featured. —JWSchmidt 18:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Peer review?
We've certainly got a ways to go to be a Featured Wikicity candidate at PokerWiki, but I'd love to get input as to how we could make it better. IIRC there's something similar at WP where not-yet-featured-standard articles can ask for peer review to get to be featured standard. Anyway, for now I'd just invite you to take a look and give feedback. (One obvious area I've started to address is more pictures, but I'd like to do better than just take Wikipedia's.) Anyway, your opinions are much obliged. — PhilipR 20:21, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Nominating the wiki might be a good way to get it some review. Unfortunately, the Featured Wikicity hasn't really been active enough to have a new wiki every week. Perhaps the criteria need to be reduced so more could get featured. Angela (talk) 00:03, 27 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Monthly featured Wikicities starting August?
There seems to be a little more activity now on nominating Wikicities. How about going to a monthly Featured Wikicity? I propose that we vote now, then promote the Wikicity with the most votes on August 1. — JamesTeterenko 18:05, 22 Jul 2005 (UTC)
- Starting September now. I'm willing to go with almost any wiki that's decently started. Let's vote Feature Wikicity/vote. --CocoaZen 23:29, 29 Aug 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Collaboration of the month
I think lots of the wikias on this page aren't really ready to be featured wikis. They'd be good candidates for the Collaboration of the month.
[edit] Page Length
In the interest of keeping this page to a reasonable length, do you think the includes at the end could be listed as links to the "Featured Wikia/XXX" instead? The Featured Wikia/XXX page includes the blurb that goes on the main page. The supporting comments that were made on this page and the voting results from the month when the Wikia was chosen to be the next featured wikia. --CocoaZen 23:18, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Split
Does anyone have an objection into splitting this page up into:
- Introduction
- List of Featured Wikia
- Nominations
It would make reading it easier. Lcarsdata 18:35, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Wikis and Wikia
- Discussion moved to Forum:Wikia is plural of Wikia. Angela (talk) 09:57, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Size?
What kind of criteria for size is there? It doesn't say one way or another. I was never really good enough to help get an article to featured status on Wikipedia, so it would be cool to eventually get the Kingdom Hearts wiki to featured status some day. However, I notice that many of the featured ones have a couple thousand or more articles, and Kingdom Hearts will never get to be that size :-( 66.231.130.203 05:18, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
- There is no size requirement. It is harder for a small wikia with fewer participants to win, but some of us vote for wikia based on their quality rather than whether we personally participate. Also, there are months when a fairly low number of votes wins. Even if you don't win, this page allows you to point out to the Wikia world some of the things that you think your Wikia does exceptionally well. Best wishes. --CocoaZen 15:43, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oops, my mistake. I looked again. There is an eligibility requirement listed that the wikia must have at least 10 pages.
- By the way, it would be easier to respond to you, if you logged in with your ID.

[edit] Approving noms?
When and how are noms approved? DC Animated Universe Wiki has three supporting comments but it hasn't been approved or rejected yet... ― Thailog 11:26, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
- Hello? ― Thailog 12:42, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- Nominations aren't really approved or rejected. You can go ahead and set up a vote section for your nominated Wikia. However, if it doesn't meet the criteria (for instance if it was featured within the last 12 months), it cannot win.

This page isn't so much about nominations as supporting comments. I'll look over the text to see where I can clarify that. The supporting comments and votes are kept separate mainly for logistical ease. It's easier to monitor that the votes are legitimate (for example, the vote ID matches) and to count them when they aren't lost in a sea of comments.
Hope that helps. --CocoaZen 15:43, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Wikis
Can place those wikis to vote? They look good, but I'm not sure if they are good enough to be featured (except the Final Fantasy Wiki that has many good articles).

[edit] What happened in July 2007
So there was no wiki promoted to Featured status during July 2007. What happened exactly? Obviously there are some issues with the current method of nominating & featuring.--Imaginationac (Talk) (Edits) (Email) 04:46, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Could it be that the entire Featured Wikia project is dropped because of the main page "redesign"? -PanSola 02:15, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Non-English wikis
Can non-English wikis be nominated and featured? There isn't much sense in placing 'em to the main page since only few users of those who read main page every day speak some random language, not English (German, Russian, Spanish etc.). Медиа (Wassily Steik) 17:18, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Different language editions of Wikia are gradually building up their own home pages, where wikis in those languages can be featured. See Central Wikia for links to the other versions of this wiki. If you'd like help getting articles featured in German, Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese, please contact the relevant community team member. For other languages, it's entirely driven by the community, and you are welcome to be bold and start a featured article section on the relevant language home page. Angela
