Wikia - creating communities

This says that the wikis were founded in 1998... is that correct? Mediawiki software wasn't even in use by Wikipedia until Jan. 2002. Scottch 06:06, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
The imported history from here says the main page was set up on May 7 2004, so I'm going to change it to that, make it something else if you have a better idea. Scottch 06:59, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
- Taken up the challenge - researched Main Page history, which shows very gradual development accelerating in August 2004, with actual download page available on wiki only in October 2004. NOT researched the other languages' wiki histories except "fr"; from the dates I recall they were linked to on the "en" main page, I'm confident they were all or mostly at different dates fron "en". - I wasn't around personally at that time. Vasc was the one who oversaw the move to MediaWiki so he might have more insight. The earliest news stories are from 1998 (including the purchase of the freeciv.org domain) though the website was clearly in existence well before that. The old site in its final form is still online here. You might be able to find more clues about its beginnings there. --Hima 10:23, 21 February 2007 (UTC)
