[edit] Discussion from Proposed wikis

[edit] Linux Usable

Hi; I'm an Informatics student and very interested on Operative Systems and Person-Machine Interface subjects. I'm also a GNU/Linux user and have some proposals to help Linux usability, as many computer users have. The idea is collect proposals, standards and reviews to make Linux more usable to nontechnical and guru users. The goal is to have documentation and resources for Linux developers, and let them make the most usable and attractive software for Linux and distros. Of course developers and users from other platforms are welcome to contribute, and use the ideas on their platforms (as long the source is refered).

Examples of proposals and wiki organization:

  • Leaders: designers, programmers, artists, administrators, domain experts;
  • Topics: usability, software, administration, standards, resources, examples of good and bad usability;
  • use Scons, instead Make;
  • hybrid spatial paradigm, tiled windows, tagged toolbars and panels, style-sheets for user interfaces, standard keyboard accessibilities, general and intuitive software installer, applications directory, infinite or virtual desktops
  • avoid menu-bars, wizards, and splashscreens
  • start menu removal, use of UNIX tools and properties (when it's more usable), last states indication when an option is changed
