[edit] Status

What's the status on this? It seems pretty dead... 01:42, 12 Apr 2005 (EDT)

There's no time limit on it. I think it's worth leaving open until there are a few more entries. Angela 13:04, 12 Apr 2005 (EDT)

[edit] fonts

would using a copyrighted fonts be illegal? Just out of curiosity... 00:52, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)

IANAL, but I'm 99.9 percent sure it's not. If that was how the law worked no one would buy fonts. Zach 08:50, 14 Apr 2005 (EDT)
The producers of The X-Files failed to pay the rights to the font they used the X from. The creators of the font sued, but courts ruled that letterforms were not copyrightable. Thus, if you want to take Adobe Garamond Pro (each weight, ie bold italic small caps ligatures, is USD$21), change the shape of a few letters ever so slightly, sell it as Bob's Garamond, and you're more than legal in the US. -- user:zanimum

[edit] wikilink to a image @ the main wikicities

Can you wikilink to a image @ the main wikicities from a subdomain. I have tried but only got a missing image notice:

Thanks for any feed back. Reddi 16:56, 18 Sep 2005 (UTC)

You should re-upload it to the wiki you want to use it on. Angela (talk) 04:01, 6 Nov 2005 (UTC)

For what it's worth, I like all the contestants better than the Pirateopedia one. I really like the signpost logo, but it's a bit too complicated to show up correctly under some circumstances. My other favorite is the orbs -- I like the revised one, but would like it even a bit better if it had the different orbs in different colors like the orbs2 one. (However, I like the clarity and the way the text was done best in the revised Orbs.) --CocoaZen 01:50, 12 Nov 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Are we going to get the chance to vote on the entries?

Are we going to get the chance to vote on the entries? I know we don't get the final say, but I really think Wikia should take our vote into consideration.

--Gorgan almighty 09:59, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)
I think Angela Wikia is making the decision all around, so voting isn't neccesary. Comments are in place to see what other people think -- just express yourself there. – Jello2 19:50, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Any date for a final decision?

The heading speaks for itself. --Gorgan almighty 14:16, 22 Nov 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Complaints

This is not the first logo contest that I've participated in, but it sure is the most unprofessionally run:

  • There was no clear time plan and - above all - there was no email announcement sent to the artists when the first round will end (I still have sketches lying around for at least one logo that I planned to submit).
  • It's not clear to me who made the decisions on the finalists.

feklee 17:59, 27 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Angela chose the finalists. And I believe you were supposed to watch the page for updates, sorry. :( It was never indicated that the entrees would be contacted before the final round. – Jello2 19:01, 27 Nov 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Final Decision

Development of the projects seems to have come to a stand-still. I don't think any more modifications are going to be made. Isn't it about time for the final decision by Wikia? —Gorgan almighty 10:08, 5 Dec 2005 (UTC)

No longer relevant.

Gorgan almighty 09:33, 12 Dec 2005 (UTC)
Wait, why is it no longer relevant? Did I miss the decision? nae'blis (talk) 21:01, 13 Dec 2005 (UTC)
No, its just because new modifications have been made, and development is underway again.
Gorgan almighty 11:05, 15 Dec 2005 (UTC)
heh now i think its slowed down again :P i think its pretty much finished, last edit was the 12/22/05 --Insertwackynamehere 03:51, 4 Jan 2006 (UTC)
Sorry about the delays. The decision was made a long time ago, but the lawyers wanted written confirmation that the winner was releasing their rights to the logo before we announced it. Angela (talk) 05:45, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comments on the winning logo during the contest

  • That's my favorite. I think the letters in "W I K I" should be closer together. 24.11.11.247
  • I like this one. Does it scale up well though? Could you make a vector version? Angela (talk) 04:42, 27 Aug 2005 (UTC)
  • I also think the "w i k i" could afford to be different, maybe a couple of points larger rather than just moving them closer together. I'm also not sure about the first i's dot touching the k (but rescaling would fix this), and the script as a whole could afford to be a little bigger. And if we're really going to be picky the trail on the s is probably unnecessary in an otherwise "sleek" logo. But, as with all the other logo proposals, how do you have the icon look meaningful? By reducing the number of skyscrapers in the tiny version? Hmmm... Garrett 16:27, 29 Aug 2005 (UTC)
  • This is one's the best in my opinion. Still, one of the problems with the current logo is that the word "cities" is too small, and this is no different. Perhaps "wiki" could be the smaller cursive word, and "cities" the big bold one. That would emphasise what's unique about wikicities.--203.113.238.32 10:34, 11 Nov 2005 (UTC)
  • This logo seems too much of foreground logo for me. It looks like it escaped a Mac toolbar-- it grabs your attention, and I can't imagine you could preserve much of the glassiness as a favicon. --Khamer 18:45, 16 Nov 2005 (UTC)
  • I agree, scale up the text a bit, and maybe give us the option to see it without the glass effect, and it's pretty nice... nae'blis (talk) 23:13, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)
  • I like it, especially the "wiki" font, but the "cities" font should be improved. I like the sleekness of this logo. «Rainer» 01:53, 19 Nov 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Suggested modifications

Although the contest has ended, small modifications to the image are welcome. It would be especially useful to have a vectorised version which can be scaled up for uses outside the site, including in print.

  • An SVG version, a different font, larger "cities" wording. Angela (talk)
  • I would like to see this one with a different font and without the button glass effect over the top. --Gorgan almighty 09:53, 18 Nov 2005 (UTC)
