They tried upgrading the Uncyclopedia first as a test (as it has a separate user database, it was one of only two wikis on wikicities that could be done separately from the rest). However, the database copies became corrupted during the conversion process (so they restored the old version). They are trying to work out what went wrong (and why I have so many parentheses). [edit] Memory Alpha / search box

The search box in the left sidebar now contains two search possibilities, internal and google:

  1. Is it possible to change the layout (or additional content) of these via a Mediawiki: page or similar?
  2. On Memory Alpha, the image URL in the first box ("Search_logo.png") should be "/memory-alpha.org/en/images/8/85/Search_logo.png" (similar for other language codes), so that the image can be changed by the community.
  3. The Google image looks ugly on dark background. If it is not possible to edit the search boxes (question 1), can this image at least be changed to a dark background version, for example the one located at www.google.com/logos/Logo_25blk.gif ?

This is now broken on all five Memory Alpha's after the "central" image has apparently been removed without changing the sidebar code still referring to it. Is there a way to do so ourselves? -- Cid

Not completely. The Google image was changed as suggested (although we might still need to work on the bg color). The "Wikicities" logo is back, but it is still not possible to change it by uploading something else to "en/images/8/85/Search_logo.png". -- Cid

I remember this problem happening at the another wiki. Logging out, clearing the browser's cache, and logging back in seems to do the trick. This bug seems to only affect certain users. «Rainer» 03:44, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I tried this a few times, I still am having the problem :( not only that but i keep getting database errors spit at me (this is uncyclopedia). also trying to veiw special:newimages on uncyc past a certain page doesnt work, last i checked. --Insertwackynamehere 22:32, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

Education wiki: nax cz reported that if a new math tag is added, only href "math" is displayed, and if that link is clicked, the link is not found (404).

[edit] Memory Alpha Ad-bar

Dashes need to be blanked by finding the right page in Special:Allmessages. For some reason, a dash used to blank a page, but now blanking a page is used instead, which is more sensible really. Angela (talk) 19:42, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

because Wikipedia uses the lucene-search extension for search, while Wikicities uses the built-in MediaWiki search. Zwitter

On the Creatures Wiki, JRChat Status appears as a dash, as opposed to not being present.

There's a little bracket under all of the contents boxes that says [undefined]. Mousing over "undefined", it says javascript:toggleToc().

"Popular pages" seems to be gone from the Special pages.

Sorry, but popular pages will not be returning. Due to the way we cache pages, the visit stats are not accurate, and popular pages relied on those. We are looking at alternative ways of getting these stats, either by using a service like Google Analytics (we're on a waiting list for this since they're not accepting new applicants) or by developing our own wiki-focused page hit stats. Also, I tried to play with our MediaWiki:Sidebar, with some success. The new sidebar loads on most pages, but it reverts back to the old sidebar on the Main Page, the Help:Contents, and the Current Events page. I don't know if I did it right or not.

I've no idea why that would happen. Are you logged in when it does this? Does refreshing (ctrl and F5 usually) help? It looks ok for me. Angela (talk) 03:52, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

The one tab that I'm having a hard time creating is "What links here" -- I've got everything else that I want.

What links here is in the toolbox beneath the search. If you want it above the search, you can move the search box down,, if you know about CSS. See Wikipedia:User:Angela/monobook.css - I've got the search where the logo should be, so that should help with working out how to move it. I think this was, or should have been, always there. See Help:Patrol. If there's consensus on any wiki to remove it, let me know. If there's general annoyance at it over whole wikis, I can switch the default to off and have it be opt-in instead of opt-out. Angela (talk) 03:52, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

The same is happening when you select "see preview". Instead of the proper template above alerting you that it is only a preview, it says "<div class="header-notice">Remember that this is only a preview, and has not yet been saved!</div>". The new "Show changes" button on the edit page (a new feature of MediaWiki 1.5) is not formatted like the other buttons. «Rainer» 03:45, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

By default, they are all the same. Many wikis have formatted the buttons to fit in better with monobook. To change all 3, make sure this is in your wiki's MediaWiki:Monobook.css: 
input.searchButton, #wpSave, #wpPreview,#wpDiff {
    padding: 0 0.4em !important;
    background-color: White;
    color: black;
    border: 1px solid #2f6fab;  
}

I don't seem to be able to edit sca21:Main Page which I need to, (has been protected in the past because of spam) also noticed from stats I think, that Sustainable Community Action Wiki doesn't seem to have any administrators? Philralph 08:53, 18 January 2006 (UTC)

There was a problem upgrading the user rights on some wikis. I've fixed this for this wiki by hand: do the user rights look correct now? Zwitter (btw: you can view the list of admins at sca21:Special:Listusers/sysop)

[edit] Article Searching Bug

Just tested this on the Yu-Gi-Oh, Computing Knowledgebase, and Mozilla Wiki's. If you enter search text that doesn't have an article name, you'd normally have a link to create a new article with the search text used. The link presented is now broken. Example:

You can <a href=":Test" class="new">create an article with this title</a>.

The results display as:

You searched for "<a href="/wiki/Test">Test</a>" <a href="/wiki/Special:Allpages/Test">[Index]</a>

This message is now wikitext, not HTML. You need to edit MediaWiki:Searchquery to change the HTML to wikitext. (e.g.: You searched for [[$1]]). Zwitter

Fixed on the Yu-Gi-Oh one, fixing on Computing Knowledgebase... but there is now a problem on the Computing Knowledgebase, where the left-hand links menu is not showing up.

[edit] Désencyclopédie namespace inaccessible

You can see the articles under «search», but you can't get to them! (e.g. Click «Communauté» in the navigation box: you get a broken redirect. Click the destination (which is «Désencyclopédie:Communauté»), get the don't-exist page. Click «Recherchez Communauté», get a list of articles in the «Désencyclopédie» namespace. Click one of them, get «Mauvais titre» error page.)

It seems to interpret the Désencyclopédie prefix as an interwiki link (just a guess). Confusius 19:18, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Zut alors! The previous configuration had desencyclopedie: (without the accents) as both the interwiki link and as the prefix to the Project: space. As the proper spelling is Désencyclopédie (avec les accents), their admin desencyclopedie:user:philo had typically followed a pattern of creating redirects at Desencyclopedie:Titre to point to the same title in mainspace as désencyclopédie:Titre. Oui, tu as raison que c'est un lien interwiki - it's an interwiki link - as creating a link within Desencyclopedie to désencyclopédie:N'importe quoi... produces a light-blue link (instead of the ordinary-blue internal link) regardless of whether the page exists. Both desencyclopedie: and désencyclopédie: appear as interwiki links if used from other wikicities.

I also notice that, in the 'navigation' box à gauche the "current news" link is now just a '-' dash. Qu'est-ce-que se passe?

I could likely recover the text of the désencyclopédie:... pages from the SQL dump (backup) files and repost them to desencyclopedie:... pages if desired, but any intervention beyond that would need to be done by Wikicities sysadmins. --carlb 00:39, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

UPDATE: Now that I look at it, it is just that the bugs that got fixed on all the other wikis were not fixed on mine because mine is new. Could somebody please do this? -AtionSong 22:44, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

After Jasonr updated polaqu: to 1.5 (which happened slightly after the others, if that means anything), the entire database there has been uneditable. Not sure what's going on, but I would appreciate it being looked into. Mathx314(talk)(email) 20:40, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Patrolling (Red Exclamation Marks)

I just thought I'd share this information with other people - to turn off the red exclamation marks (that are used for "patrolling" pages) in the Recent Changes for your Wikicity, just add the following code to MediaWiki:Monobook.css in your wiki: 

span.unpatrolled {
   display: none !important;
}

Note that this doesn't actually disable patrolling (to do that you have to edit some MediaWiki file), but just hides the red exlcamation marks. «Rainer» 05:32, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I suggested that muppets.wc enable this earlier (see their monobook.css. But it is a temporary fix. See Talk:MediaWiki_1.5#Muppet_Wiki_bugs above. Angela is pondering turning it off by default on most 'cities, and having it opt-in instead. Uncyclopedia had patrolled edits switched off a few months ago, makes a much less cluttered RC. [edit] Spam blacklist irregularlity

I tried copy/pasting/saving that spam myself on another uncyclopedia page, and could not. But someone obviously could. Odd! (Note: This might be related to a bug Tim fixed yesterday, which caused only items on the spam watchlist prior to the 1.5 upgrade to be blocked (fixed)) Splarka 00:22, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

My Wikicity, kwish.wikicities.com was apparently lost in the upgrade somehow... Since 18/1, a DB error appears when Kwish is accessed:

Hi Angela, hi Tim. I loved that one when I first saw it on Memory Alpha: I can add and remove user-groups like "Sysop" or "bot" easy on a drop-down menu. Now this is gone and looks again like this which I highly regret. On the other side I found a new special page named Activeusers. Cute, but I'd like to have these neat drop-downs back. After some time of investigation, here the plain reason: "The action you have requested is limited to users with the 'userrights' permission assigned". Although, it's a great tool for one acting bureaucrat in a wiki to assign (temporary) bots or de-assign a sysop when he's left the project. It's always been a big thing to give bot-flags, for instance. I guess, this will stick with the stewards in future. — Florian™ talk 16:57, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

I believe the problem mostly was the insecurity in the ability to de-bureaucrat oneself and de-sysop others, which as you say should only remain with the stewards and devs. The bot flag, on the other hand, in the hands of any bureaucrat would make 'hide bots' on the RC as trustworthy as the judgement of the least-trusted bureaucrat. They might bring that functionality back if there is demand. Maybe? Splarka 22:25, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
"userrights", or "steward" access, is not being given out on Wikicities (or other Wikia sites) due to problems with users trying to take control of a wiki by desysoping and blocking all other users. I would like bureaucrats to be able to handle bot requests, but this feature is still pending. There is very rarely a reason to desysop anyone, so this is something that can be handled by Wikia staff (just use Special:Contact, rather than giving too much control to any one community member. [edit] Format of image page links has changed .. or has it?

I don't understand most of the technical terms in the above sections, so I apologize if this problem is merely a special case of some other problem already being discussed.

Typing "[[Image:Example.lmp|Demo]]" used to result in "Demo", but now it results in "File:Example.lmp".  Adding a colon, i.e. "[[:Image:Example.lmp|Demo]]", restores the prior behavior.

I see that this anomaly has not been moved to the "resolved" page.  I don't know whether that means you're thinking it over or you're waiting for me to say "all set, thanks".  In case it's the latter, let me clarify.

On our wiki, one can not only upload images (pictures), but also certain non-image files, namely those with .lmp and .wad extensions.  The link format is different in each case.

For images, one types [[Image:Spider.png]] to add a picture to a page, and [[:Image:Spider.png|Information about the spider picture]] to link to that picture's info page.  Which is just what you said.

For other files, one types [[Media:e1m1wik3.lmp|This is a LMP file]] to link to a file.  Before the upgrade, we typed [[Image:e1m1wik3.lmp|file info]] to link to its info page; the link said "file info".  After the upgrade, all those links suddenly say "Image:e1m1wik3.lmp", and to make them say "file info" again, we have to change the code to [[:Image:e1m1wik3.lmp|file info]].

So again, is this a bug, or should it have been this way from the start?     Ryan W from the Doom Wiki, 2006 January 31 03:35 (EST)

[edit] Talk pages and watch lists, disassociated!

Pages added to the watch-list previous to the upgrade have now lost the automatic include of the talk page in the watch list (at least on Uncyclopedia). This is odd! They can be re-added by unwatching and re-watching the page, but for people with hundreds of watched pages this might be a bother, and some might not notice for a while! Can this be fixed or should we put up a sitenotice for all users to fix their watchlist? Splarka 00:35, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

Update: As of today (February 11th), the talk pages for pages added pre-1.5 seem to be back on the watch list, at least for me on Uncyclopedia. This section might be archivable? Splarka 02:55, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Shared templates don't work. See w:c:fr.starwars:Utilisateur:Angela. The templates appears as {{wikicities:Star Wars}} rather than being converted to anything. Angela (talk) 18:56, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

  • This happened to me too - and I'm a novice user. The easiest fix is not to rely on the shared templates, but to set up a your own. It's not that hard to set up a simple set. To get started you'll need to get the page you're editing (probably your Mainpage) to look for local templates (e.g. for a template called MainStyle1 the code should look like this: {{MainStyle1}}). I've also refered my Mainpage to Leftbox and Rightbox templates because I like using separate text boxes (again using the double squiggly brackets around the new local template name). Save the edits, and notice how the local template references appear as links. Follow each template link and set up the appropriate formatting code - or to quickly get started, just copy the code from MainStyle1; Left_box; and Right_box from SPSS wiki. Note: you'll have to go into edit mode in each case to see all the code. Once you have your new layout working you can play with the color of the boxes by editing your local template's hex color codes (you'll see code like background-color: #E2DDB5). The Main page template doesn't seem to work. It should be two side by side boxes but instead show as two sections. This problem shows up on other wikis which used the template or use a similar code.--Tim Thomason 13:40, 21 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Memory Alpha / Mediawiki namespace

I'm trying to remove some of the HTML "errors" by editing the pages in Mediawiki: namespace, but some of them don't even seem to be in use. For example:

  • MediaWiki:Watchdetails vs. the text actually displayed on a watchlist
  • MediaWiki:Previousdiff and Nextdiff vs. the line "Go to next/previous diff" when comparing diffs.

We have a terribly outdated page Memory_Alpha:All_system_messages which links to external pages and has template links in the form of {{int:Watchdetails}}. Can someone look into this and tell me what to do? Thanks. (MemoryAlpha:User:Cid Highwind)

I'm having lots of problems on the TI-BASIC Wiki. The main page boxes are not showing the right text, and "Create an article with this title" message on the search page is showing up incorrectly. What do I need to do to fix this? -AtionSong 22:23, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

This puts a 'Google' button on the Wikicities search box, and a hidden Google form below it. The Google button runs a single line javascript that submits the hidden Google form using the Wikicities query. This would generate the exact revenue URL that the form did before. If the user has no javascript, only the Google button is broken (but that is rare). This means you get the hypothetical revenue without an obnoxious google search form. (Dawg sure is clever.)
