Wikia - creating communities
[edit] Wikia, female or male, singular or plural
Is Wikia Inc male or female? Is a single Wikia wiki male or female? It makes a difference when translating to laguanges where nouns have gender. In Spanish it would sound more natural as female (becouse of the a at the end of the word), but male wouldn´t be wrong if it´s conventional. Actually I think it´s more of a marketing decision than a linguistic one. Anyway, we need a Standard, and I guess to set a standard for all languages that have this kind of trouble might be a good idea.
Wikia being both the singular an plural form also brings it's complications. Again, in Spanish although it sounds unatural (even more unatural than being male), it's possible. When refering to a single wiki we have to say "un/a wikia" (a wikia) or "el/la wikia" (the wikia). When refering to wikia wikis in general we can say "Las/Los Wikia" (Although Las/Los Wikias, sounds more natural). However, having a different form of pluralization than the english one, might be a little confusing. Also, same as in english when we don't specifie somehow if we are talking about a single wikia or wikia wikis in general it may cause some strange double meanings. I suggest we change the standard plural form both for english and for romance languages to Wikias.--Rataube 14:31, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
- Neuter? In German we have der (masculine), die (feminine), das (neuter), and die (plural) roughly for The. I've only been in a class for almost a year, but that's what I got. Any other languages have the third, how would the translations compare? ~Dantman(talk) tricks Apr 1, 2007 @ 19:18 (UTC)
In Swedish, there's common (masculine and feminine merged), and neuter. In Swedish, definite forms (the) use suffixes, e.g. house = hus (neuter), the house = huset. I wasn't sure if Wikia should be common (en Wikia|n) or neuter (ett Wikia|t). Common sounded better. – Smiddle 20:11, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
- Also, since suffixes are used, it was hard to decide an ending for the plural, Wikia, due to the irregular ending. I decided to keep it "Wikia", and I should make an ending. Endings for plural often are -na or -en. Both "Wikiana" and "Wikien" sound stupid, so I had to change it to "Wikiorna" which is the regular conjugation for nouns ending with -a. – Smiddle 20:20, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

What should I do if I would like to translate (at least partly) Wikia to Czech language?
