Talk:Wikimania
Wikia - creating communities
[edit] Gil's notes
Here's my notes from our lunch meeting today, on suggestions, thoughts, and ideas for what Wikia should build
- there was a wikicities logo on every Wikia on the left and navigation... should we bring that back below the search box
- can users add their favor wiki links to the nav bar (make cross-wiki navigation easier)
- how do you make visible what wikis you are a member of (declare membership or done an edit). JOIN A WIKI - what does that mean?
- global edits, global recent changes, global watch lists, pick a list of wikia that you want recent changes on, red talk pages list of newbies
- hi to founders - how do we welcome people in. New people don't know when to start and get overwhelmed. Can we volunteer to help? Users and staff?
- There are lots of dead wikis, do we close them, do we encourage others to take over them? Answer: BOTH
- muppets has an "attention" link at the top of the home page, that links to the talk page where there are requests for specific help that they need on specific articles. They also have a welcome message that links to the attention category
- list of things we think you could do (edit, create pages, spell check)
- friends features
- unified messaging
- unified login
- ability to navigate across wikia
- home page is too corporate
- universal messaging, IRC, mailing list, forums, user pages, water cooler -too many places
- Forums may need to be message boards
- a forum for admins - Admins wikia + Forums - or a WIKI FAQ section for admins on Central
- NAV bar on muppets has a link to the active talk pages, go to recent changes and select the talk pages
- spell checkers are another example of where tools are needed
- wiki list of small fixes, and then allow users to volunteer to do them, or offer bounties to have them done. We need to show that things are "getting done" to our admins don't get frustrated that little fix requests are getting "on the list" but don't come "off the list" fast enough
