Uncyclopedia joins Wikia

Wikia - creating communities

Jump to: navigation, search

Wikia would like to welcome to Wikicities all users of Uncyclopedia, the encyclopedia parody.

On May 25, 2005, the founder of Uncyclopedia, Jonathan Huang, announced a need for a new wiki host and contacted Wikia about this, who are very pleased to take on the hosting of this wiki project.

Uncyclopedia's previous host allowed only 100MB of disk space for the database. When the project reached 90MB in May 2005, Jonathan Huang made the decision to move to free hosting at Wikia, in the same way that Memory Alpha had done three months previously (see Memory Alpha joins Wikia).

The goal of the project remains unchanged; to provide the world's misinformation in the least redeeming and most searingly sarcastic and humourous way possible. Aside from a brief interruption of service as the database is transferred, Wikia hopes that the Uncyclopedia community will not undergo any other problems relating to the move. The only changes users will notice will be the introduction of a "hosted by Wikicities" icon and a link to Wikia's terms of use in the footer of the site. The position and size of the advertisements served by Google, which Uncyclopedia introduced in March 2005, will remain unchanged.

At the current time, the user database at Uncyclopedia will be separate from the one used for Wikia's existing projects. A discussion on whether this is desirable is taking place on the project's Community Portal.

Like Memory Alpha, Uncyclopedia will not officially be a Wikicity, since it is hosted on a separate domain, and released under a Creative Commons license rather than the GFDL.

Wikia would like to thank Jonathan Huang for the opportunity to take on this new project and we hope the new hosting will not disappoint either him or the growing community at Uncyclopedia.

If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints, please feel free to discuss them at the Uncyclopedia Community Portal or on the talk page of this announcement.

For more information on the project, please read about Uncyclopedia.
