[edit] WikiMac

Hi Angela,

Thanks so much for getting WikiMac up and running. Could you please grant me Bureaucrat status on WikiMac? (As I'm the one that created the wiki).

Also, I would deeply appreciate a Chinese version. Like Wikipedia, it would be best if it could support Chinese traditional and simplified.

FInally, how do I change the image? It's a sunflower at present, with square brackets.

Thanks, --DavidFeng 21:15, 9 Nov 2004 (PST)

[edit] Multiple User Pages

Hi, Angela. :) I joined WikiMac, but was surprised to discover that I had a separate user and talk page. I think the idea of signing up once is great, but it's somewhat frustrating that I would need to maintain so many different personal spaces. Just commenting. Thank you for welcoming me. :) func(talk) 08:51, 19 Nov 2004 (PST)

The option of having one user page should be available in future. Angela

[edit] Building G.Knowledge Wiki citie into a frame set within the main GreenZone.org Site

Angela, Thank you for updating the logo on the [G.Knowledge] Wikicitie. I just now noticed. I was working on the other sections of the site. So, again, thank you very much.

Would it be possible to build G.Knowledge into a frame set within the Main [GreenZones] site? I tested this and the wikicitie G.Knowledge site pops out of the frame.

The reason I need to build the the site within the main site, is to keep the navigation on top, to allow people, members to move between the wiki site, and the other community features within the [GreenZones].

Also, how do I become the admin for the site? How do I control the content within the site?

Now fixed. Angela

[edit] questions & some answers

Q: I hope I'm interpreting this correctly... is the "talk" page where it's most appropriate to address messages to a particular user?

Q: How do I set up a link to my e-mail without actually entering my e-mail address? I thought that was possible based on the way the ID form was worded. A: How blind can I get, I see the "E-mail this user" link in the toolbox now. (I'm leaving my dumb/initial questions here as potential fodder for an FAQ. Would you like me to start one?)

--Robin 15:32, 6 Dec 2004 (PST)

P.S. I tried using things like Editing help, but since no one's had a chance to fill out some things like that... I'm just giving it my best guess. Thanks to the folks who run this site for the opportunity. I've made some notes in the Wikicities:Sandbox.

Q: Also, is there a "main" user page? A: Never mind on this one, I just found the User List under special pages.)

Q: I'm entering this anonymously, but this is from Robin. I tried to change some preferences, and now all the pages I view are scrambled with raw html commands. How can I change my preferences back to the default (which worked)? A: See instructions. (You have to adjust the instructions slightly. I'll post more about how to do that later.) --Robin 20:07, 13 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] Peace City

Hi Angela many thanks for geting us started with the Peace Wikicity - we are having a retreat to get people up and running and then hopefully we will settle down in a year or two. Just so you know three of our active members have commented on the good vibe that wikicity provides.

Keep up the good work.

One thing I find strange is . . .. when I edit a section on the front page, a comparison table comes up and I have two edit boxes and then I have to re-edit the section to include the whole page otherwise if I save the edit section becomes the whole page - I must have changed my settings - m m m . . tried to go back to the default ones without luck . . .

Any ideas? 82.69.58.117 01:31, 7 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] UKrailways

Thank you for getting UKrailways going, I could do with Bureaucrat status, so I can enable some administrators in the fullness of time.

Bedders 00:44, 15 Dec 2004 (PST)

I'll do this when I am back from vacation next week. There have been some changes to the software which means I can't currently make admins, but I will try to sort this out by Monday. Angela 13:38, 17 Dec 2004 (PST)

:You're now a sysop/bureaucrat again. Angela 02:15, 21 Dec 2004 (PST) Another bug has caused all admin access to be lost again!

This should be working normally again now. Angela

[edit] Sustainable Community Action

Hi Angela
have been trying to add logo, uploaded image to 'Wiki' but just got page protected notice. Image also uploaded with different name. Thanks, regards

Philralph 02:26, 17 Dec 2004 (PST)
You need to be an admin to upload the logo. I'll make you one next week (see also message above). Angela 13:38, 17 Dec 2004 (PST)

:This should work now. Angela 02:15, 21 Dec 2004 (PST) Another bug has caused all admin access to be lost again!

This should be working normally again now. Angela

[edit] WikiMac (18 Dec 2004)

Greetings Angela,

WikiMac reporting a few errors -- my bureaucrat status has gone in the English version and my admin status gone in ZH (Chinese). I'm kindly requesting bureaucrat status for both accounts.

Thanks, and have a nice weekend,

--DavidFeng 05:40, 18 Dec 2004 (PST)

Hello. It appears that I am having the same problem. I noticed that when I tried to delete a page in Calgary Community, I no longer had that capability. -- JamesTeterenko 07:04, 18 Dec 2004 (PST)
There have been some changes to the software which meant everyone lost their admin powers, including me. Jason is currently trying to fix this. I will restore everyone's admin/bureaucrat access as soon as I have mine back. Sorry for any inconvenience this is causing. Angela 20:46, 20 Dec 2004 (PST)

:All wiki founders should now be sysops and bureaucrats. Let me know if you have any problems with the new access levels. Angela 02:15, 21 Dec 2004 (PST) Another bug has caused all admin access to be lost again! Angela 03:50, 21 Dec 2004 (PST)

This should be working normally again now. Angela
It works for me. Thanks Angela. -- JamesTeterenko 05:47, 24 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] NeoPets Guilds

Angela, Thanks for setting up the NeoPets Guilds!

I've added a bunch of start-up pages, including some help, the poetry and newsletter pages and created a disclaimer. It's all rather raw now, but I guess that's in line with wiki growth. Thanks again!

As I mentioned in e-mail, the majority of the people in the PurpleLightHouse Guild which is helping to start the wiki are 14 years old or older. However, a few are under the 13 year old lower limit set for wikicities. Does that limit mean that they cannot contribute to any of the wikicities (including the Guilds) or just to the main one? Since we are planning to keep the content of the NeoPets Guilds wikicity ok for all ages, I've assumed that they are permitted to visit the site and read the hints even if they shouldn't have an ID. And, given the way the World Wide Web is, we really couldn't stop them from visiting. (Sorry, I should have asked this earlier, but since I'm well over 13, it didn't occur to me until I was trying to boil down the Terms of Use for the site.)

- RJ 17:43, 20 Dec 2004 (PST)

The terms of use apply to all of the Wikicities. However, they are still in a draft format, so I will talk to some others about whether this clause legally needs to be in there and let you know the outcome of those discussions. Angela 20:46, 20 Dec 2004 (PST)
Since I know (in real life) the only participant in the guild that is starting this up who is under 13 (assuming the others whom I don't know, told the truth about their ages to the NeoPets site), I can enforce this fairly easily at the current time. In the future, it could be more of an issue.
I can put it in the Terms, and block violations that I'm aware of... as you discuss this and share the outcomes, could you consider the following? Are we permitted to encourage younger users to visit (but not post)? Am I required by the terms I agreed to to try to block visitors who are younger than 13? Can children under 13 have IDs, but only be permitted to post in certain wikis?
For now, I'll put a no IDs or posting for under 13 in the NeoPet Guilds Terms.
Sorry to bring up all these questions, but I hope it's better to do so now. ??
- RJ 06:43, 21 Dec 2004 (PST)
Thank you. I've changed the NeoPet Guild's [Guidelines] to match the revisions to the term. (People under 13 can have IDs, but cannot give out personal information.) I'm posting this here, in case anyone was interested in the outcome, but you're welcome to delete this thread. (I'll come back and delete it in a week or so. I know I can do that, and I hope it's ok etiquette for me to remove my outdated questions from your talk page. (If not, please let me know.) - RJ 17:32, 23 Dec 2004 (PST)
You can remove it if you really want to, but I generally prefer to keep an archive of older comments since often the same questions will come up again, and also it's interesting to keep a track of what has been asked before. Angela 18:24, 23 Dec 2004 (PST)

Angela -
Thank you again! (This time for the permissions.)
NeoPets Guild has a logo now. It's a little smaller than the recommended size and fairly simple because I don't have good picture editing tools on this PC right now. (sigh - guess it leaves room for improvement) - RJ 22:13, 24 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] MASP

Thank you for you assistance getting started. Just did a look see at "recent changes" and find the edits I've done on MASP and Astronomy are not included. I would like to change Masp to MASP and have moved content to the MASP pages to facilitate that. I am looking forward to MASP showing up on the wikicities home page.

The wiki is now available at http://astronomy.wikicities.com/. I'll move over the edits that you placed on this central Wikicity to that new one. Angela 06:44, 23 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] Statistics

Thanks for logging the bug about the statistics. I was going to mention it to you, but I figured I would do a bit more testing myself. I figure it has something to do with the fact that I do not have content in every namespace. The next time I have a few minutes, I'll probably create at least one page in each namespace and see what happens. Have a merry Christmas. -- JamesTeterenko 05:47, 24 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] Proposed Wikis

Hello, I noticed the following on your "to do" list on your user page: Proposed wikis: Business plans, Jitney Network. Since I created these pages, how can I help? Samw 05:25, 26 Dec 2004 (PST)

Hi. Those were just on my to-do list as I realised I had meant to respond to them and hadn't. I also wanted to check with you whether you wanted the business plans wiki created yet, or were just waiting to see whether others were interested first, but after reading Proposed wikis again, I think you mean you don't actually want to start this immediately. Is that right? Angela 06:27, 26 Dec 2004 (PST)
Correct, I think the Business plans wiki should stay in the main namespace until there's demonstrated interest and that the main namespace should be used as an incubator for this and other ideas. Unless there's a ready-made group surrounding a topic already, wikis will take a long incubation period before they take off. If the main namespace gets too polluted, may I suggest an "incubator" wikicity? One criteria for when a wiki is ready to move off to its own wikicity is when there starts to be namespace collisions. In the meanwhile, I'll happily add random thoughts to the business plans and other wikis to get the ball rolling. Samw 09:48, 26 Dec 2004 (PST)
Hi Samw. I do like the idea of an incubator wiki. However, this could lead to broken links when the wiki is moved to its own domain, unless redirects from the incubator to the live site are going to be kept, which could lead to far too many redirects eventually. Do you think that would be a problem? Angela 04:28, 29 Dec 2004 (PST)
IMHO redirects are not necessary for all pages of wikis developed in the incubator. For internal links, getting them correct in the new Wikicity would be part of the setup in the new Wikicity. If a page in the incubator is so popular that it already has external links, then it should've been moved to it's own Wikicity long ago. That's another pleasant problem to deal with on a case by case basis. Samw 06:31, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)

[edit] G-Wiki..or maybe G-Pedia

Thank you all for my new toy: Genealogy.Wikicities (or maybe I will promote the term "G-Wiki" or "G-Pedia").

Having said that, I sent you an e-mail about naming--though I am cotoning to the one y'all chose for it.

The question I have is about SysOps; I don't think I have gotten anything about that from you or found anything that tells me the who's and how's of Administrating that Wiki.

Thanks again. iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 06:19, 31 Dec 2004 (PST)

I can understand the name doesn't sound that exciting, but the aim of the URL is to have something easily guessable, as explained in Name for the wiki. However, the title for the wiki can be anything you like, such as G-Pedia. Moving the Genealogy:Main Page to the title you'd like will help to give the wiki its own identity, and the namespaces (if those are going to be used) can be changed so that the project namespace is the same as the title for the wiki. Angela 21:16, 1 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Footywiki - ready to start

Hi Angela - I'm unsure whether my e-mail is working, so just letting you know that I'm ready to start work once the wiki is created.

This is known bug. I've just increased the priority on it, so hopefully it will be fixed soon and math tags will work here like they do on Wikibooks. Angela 08:17, 6 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Useful links to game products vs paid advertising

Just added a question over at Talk:Terms_of_use that I'd appreciate guidance on from Wikicities, would you be able to answer if you get a moment? GreenReaper 01:19, 7 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Peace_: - let me in

I tried to join your new group, but haven't been confirmed yet. As for the above, it's an introduction & it's as good as any. Most of the people who came to the page probably aleady have had some kind of contact with me somewhere. I did receive a very funny reivew of this site from Sabine. My main job is writing new poetry. I'm also wondering what's going to happen here, I thought you might delete this place very soon. So should I do something else or let it go or delete it? I notice that there are still visitors. I never expected there would be 450 visits. But it's slowing down now. I can't always get online when ever I want to. We don't live in Los Angeles anymore but in a small town in a low spot where mountains woods & the ocean come together. The electricity goes out or the phone lines do I couldn't get online most of Thursday & Friday. Much of the downtown was destroyed by a tsunami in 1964 after an earthquake in Alaska. So when can I write messages at peace-1? Steve

Hi. Regarding deletion, the site is certainly not going to be deleted. We have the target of reaching 24 million page hits a month by the middle of next year. The site if going to grow, not disappear and be deleted. I can sympathize with you about not being able to get online since I've had the same problem recently and am still trying to catch up. :)
The Peace-l list seems to be working. Is this what you meant when you said "new group"? Did you not get a confirmation email when you tried to subscribe? What exactly happened? Angela 23:57, 10 Jan 2005 (PST)

Hello, Angela. I've resent the information. Please tell me again if there is any problem with it. Thanks, Djinn 17:03, 12 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] It's Peace Jim but not as we know it

Peace Elements

Wow, this is decidedly unpeaceful for a Peace wiki. I just wanted to let you know that as a bureaucrat, you can only make sysops, not "unmake" them. If you need anyone desysopped, please let either me or Jason know. Angela 18:49, 12 Jan 2005 (PST)

LOL

Mysterious. The Ways of the Force, they are.

Me a bearucrat? Gosh. Well I suppose the person who needs to be desysopped is Lobster. I know for I am that cructacean. Good to see the Wikicities search engine and other continuing ease of use features. Well done to you, Jason and Jimbo :-) Lobster

[edit] Nifty Stuff For Dummies @ Peace Elements

Hi Angela...thank you for your suggestions and guidance on the licensing stuff. My serious "ART" friends would kick me for any of that but it's all pixels anyways. You made it really easy to apply the changes with the links. I just don't get online as much as I used to w/ my current soul-sucking day job...we do not have internet access...--Lynnkub 20:05, 12 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Thanks

Angela, thanks for uploading a logo to Tourism — it's much better than anything I could have come up with! — and for the other advice. (I'm going to be WikiVacationing for a couple of weeks until the beginning of February, so I'll have to wait until then before I can do any more work on the Topic-Tourism wiki.) [edit] ICQ

Hi Angela

- trying to sort out ICQ on Linux

using GAIM - tried to find you . . . .

here is my new Linux ICQ - :-)

ICQ 275855951

I notice you use Skype - used this twice and was impressed - if I work it out for Linux will arrange a chat

- however getting CurlChat running is more of a priority

Also notice you use IRC - maybe it would be worth sorting this as we have a specific wikicities channel - never used it much

Any possibility of a wc (wikicities - hey your name) chat room?

Be Kind (what kind? The best kind you know how)

Onward And Upward Sideways And Inward (as they say in some dimensions)

Many thanks as always

Lobster

Hi Lobster. I don't use ICQ or any other types of chat other than IRC. It's hard enough to keep up with everything in the 6 channels I monitor there to really want to find other places. Angela 04:02, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Harming minors

From Terms of use:

Users of this service shall not act in a way which would be harmful minors.

First, it's harmful to minors. Second, why doesn't it state that they should not act so on Wikicities (implying that they should not act this way in real life either, which is commendable, but not really enforceable).

I've made changes to reflect this comment. Angela

Third, who decides what is harmful?

That's a matter of judgement which Wikicities would have to make if someone complained about some harm being caused. Angela

I hate stupid legalese. Just for information, let me explicitly state that my use of Wikicities should in no way be constitute my endorsement of or agreement with the terms of use. I do not agree with anything written there and reserve the right to sue Wikicities for libel, slander, loss of revenues, personal discomfort and anything else. I hate stupid legalese. Paranoid 06:42, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

I can understand that you hate it, but we do need a terms of use. Are there any ways in which you think it could be made less legalistic? Angela 09:38, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Your Feedback (NeoPets Guilds)

Angela - Thank you very much for your feedback! I value your opinion, so it's wonderful to hear the good stuff and helpful to hear the constructive.
I'll try to watch it on the unnecessary underscores. I'm still learning wiki formatting (obviously). I've learned a lot from the good examples on the Wikicities main site and WikiMac.
One of the next things I need to understand better is when to use the wiki's namespace and about redirecting or moving pages. I found some pages on those topics. Now I just have to read and get a better understanding of how it applies. Thanks again! - RJ 11:33, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

I've adapted these two help pages from Meta to make them simpler and more specific to Wikicities. See Help:Namespace and Help:Moving pages. Basically, whether you use the project namespace or not is up to you. Do you want to separate content from information about the wiki? On Wikipedia, this is important since you don't want policies mixed in with encyclopedia articles, but for Wikicities, there might not be so much of a reason to separate these. On this central Wikicity, we don't use the project namespace at all. Angela 12:46, 14 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Google ads bug, Administrator status, Toki Pona VfD

A few things: First, have you ever edited a page with google ads? The little "styles" bar is way up there, and the ad pushes the textbox down a mile. Use the button ads on edit pages PLEASE, they're 120x120.

I'll copy this to talk:advertising. There are a lot of issues at the moment. Angela

Second: I suppose I had to create my username on the Mozilla Community wiki first, so I've done so, same as this one.

The name should carry over to all Wikicities. Angela
I think I tried to login but failed. I did sign up with the same name/pass and it seems to have taken it instead of rejecting it. Anyway, what I mean to say is, I wasn't sure if you were going to create an admin name and send me the name and password or if I had to make my name and it would be granted SysOp status. I can't currently upload the new logo (which isn't a problem... yet) etc, so I'd like SysOp as soon as possible. It's not needed yet, so no rush, but eventually I will to add the logo and whatever else arises. Also, I got an edit conflict when I tried to submit this (i seem to get one if i take too long editing a page), and appaerntly what it's tried to do is send this section as the whole page instead of just replacing the section. I've had this happen quite a few times already and it's annoying. There's no conflict. --Me at work 14:44, 16 Jan 2005 (PST)
The 'bug' suggested on my talk page was indeed true, I had that option "Show preview on first edit" checked. It is now unchecked. I suppose you could edit in a warning to "not use this feature" so that noone else makes this mistake. --Me at work 18:38, 16 Jan 2005 (PST)
It's a known bug. See MediaZilla:275. There is also a new help page about this at Help:Edit conflict which can be linked to from MediaWiki:Tog-previewonfirst. Angela 18:55, 16 Jan 2005 (PST)
Thanks a lot, I saw that in recentchanges so i checked my profile and there it was. I didn't even know about that option, nice job :) Maybe someday soon the googlead CSS fixes I mentioned on Talk:Advertising can be implemented. If you want to see what they look like without actually going into the server, get EditCSS and install it. It is for Firefox, but I'm doubting that's going to be a problem, although I don't know for sure which browser is your preferred. --Me at work 19:07, 16 Jan 2005 (PST)

Third: wikipedia:Toki Poni is up for deletion, same with the creators name. Since we have a Toki pona encyclopedia here, I see serious problems going to develop from the links to the wikipedia entry for it which are in the aforementioned article if it goes through (but i doubt it will). Just thought you should be cognizant[1] of that one. --Me at work 00:44, 15 Jan 2005 (PST)

I don't think it will have a lot of effect. The toki pona community is fairly small, and there are better ways of promoting the wiki that through a link on a Wikipedia article. Angela 09:18, 15 Jan 2005 (PST)
As an update, it looks like it's Deletionists: 1, Inclusionists: 0. Page now gone. --Me at work 23:16, 24 Jan 2005 (PST)
Do you mean the Wikipedia article on toki pona is gone? It seems to be still at Wikipedia:Toki Pona. Angela 04:02, 25 Jan 2005 (PST)
Gah, I clicked my VfD link then the other link I pasted, which ended in 'i' instead of 'a'. Oops. --Me at work 09:31, 25 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Monobook.css

[Comment from my to-do list: Why is MediaWiki:Monobook.css not working?]

It's not working because there is no default page there. If you look at Special:Allmessages, they are all red links on other wikis. However if you create the page, it does indeed work. I have tested this on Mozilla Community successfully. --Me at work 13:09, 24 Jan 2005 (PST)
The page did exist, with a {text-decoration:none;} on it, but had no effect so I deleted it. Links seem to be non-underlined now anyway so it may have been a temporary problem. Angela 17:56, 24 Jan 2005 (PST)
I see them all underlined now. Should I Shift-Refresh? About monobook not working, I made the little user bar (Name, My talk, Prefs, Watchlist, Contribs, Logout) a sidebar for a bit, and after a forced refresh it was fine. Maybe you're having caching problems? --Me at work 23:15, 24 Jan 2005 (PST)
Odd. Which skin are you using? In everything other than monobook, the "Underline links" option within "misc settings" in your preferences ought to turn these off. In monobook, they are off for me even after refreshing. Angela 04:02, 25 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Blocklist not auto-expiring?

One which was supposed to expire a few days ago is still showing as active in mozilla:Special:Ipblocklist. --Me at work 06:35, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

Another bug: mozilla:Special:Statistics.
Excluding those, there are ' pages that are probably legitimate content pages.
There have been a total of ' page views, and ' page edits since the wiki was setup.

And yes, I know interwiki links are broken to mozilla, but eventually they won't be? --Me at work 10:41, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)
The blocks issue has been fixed according to MediaWiki bug 1204. I'll see about upgrading to the latest MediaWiki.
The Special:Statistics issue is listed at bug:56
The interwiki links ought to work soon. This is bug:60.

[edit] Changing namespace

On my Pokémon wiki, The wiki namespace is currently set to "Pokémon". I would like to change it to "Pokemon" as the making the é is a hassle and impossible to type in the search box without copy and pasting or with a foreign keyboard. So... Could you help me? – Jellochuu! 14:27, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

This is changed now. The name for the wiki is Pokemon, not Pokémon. Angela 15:17, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

Also, are we allowed to supress the Google search box via Monobook.css? – Jellochuu! 14:53, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

No. This is a sponsored search, and will supposedly make money which enables us to run Wikicities. I've added this point to the terms of use now. Angela 15:17, 27 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Licensing

Are Wikicity founders allowed to choose their own licensing for the wiki they founded? Or does it have to be GFDL? I would like to license content on the Pokémon under a Creative Commons license... – Jellochuu! 09:26, 30 Jan 2005 (PST)

I know you removed your question but I decided to revert & answer. I suggest you read Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Multi-licensing. You can (probably) multi-licence your own edits. Maybe this is helpful? --Me at work 11:09, 30 Jan 2005 (PST)

[edit] Thanks for community help!

I'm excited by the possibilities of using my new wiki at community.wikicities.com! Thanks again for your help. I've started loading in some information; as usual the main question becomes "How do I present this info in a way that's actually useful?" <grin> Interface, interface, interface has become the new "location, location, location". Pluckey 13:04, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)

I've just written a new help page at Help:Navigation. Let me know if you need any more information on this. Angela 14:21, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)

Say, I forgot to mention something. Do you think it would be better or worse to modify how this wiki appears in the List of Wikicities -- making it "Community Communication" instead of "Community"? I understand about the objective to make the name something "rememberable" ... I had originally considered the name "Communify" -- a quasi-made-up word incorporating "unifying community communication -- but that's just asking for trouble, what with its similarity to "community". Typos alone would vote against that, I suppose. I think it'd be fairly insane for me to expect anyone would even try to type in "communitycommunication.wikicities.com" so keeping the URL as just "community" would work fine for me. Any suggestions? - Pluckey 13:22, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)

Changing it to Community Communication in the list, and calling it that whenever you write about the wiki is fine. I'd advise against changing the URL or project namespace to that though simply because it's too long to type. Angela 14:21, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)
That's cool. Say, is changing the name to "Community Communication" in "The List O' Cities" something I can do (which obviously I haven't gleaned how yet) or something which requires your expert hand? :-) Pluckey 15:22, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)
First, something you can do is append colons before your text to make it threaded. Secondly, yes. To start, I'd reccomend you middle click "what links here" to open it in a new tab (if you're not using firefox or another nice tabbing program then you will have a lot tougher time doing this). This way you can see what other pages you'll have to "fix". Then, 'move" the original page to the new name (Community Communication). After that, go and open all the pages that link to it in new tabs, and find where it links and correct it. On the Wikicity Descriptions page, it's as a template, , which will be changed to . The rest of it is simplle wikilink changing (i think).
But, although you can attempt it, I'd reccomend it not be done by you as Angela may have some special other things to do, that I am not aware of. Easier to mess it up doing it on your own than to allow someone else to make the possible mistakes :) --Me at work 15:45, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)
Ah ha! Stacking colons creates more indentations. Now I know. Secondly, I agree -- this is probably beyond my limited set of expertise (Sunday marks my first week of using a wiki) & I'd gladly accept any help on this minor issue. However, and I may be misunderstanding what you're proposing, Me at work, but won't moving the page to a new location also change the URL (from community.wikicities to communitycommunication.wikicities)? I'd like to retain the current existing URL -- but change what shows up in the List of Wikicities list from "Community" to "Community Communication". Hope this makes some kinda sense! Pluckey 16:51, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)
Replied at your talk page. Angela 23:03, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)

[edit] Mediawiki 1.4b6

An attacker could craft a URL which, when visited by a particular logged-in user, would execute arbitrary JavaScript code on the user's browser in the wiki's site context. This attack has been blocked, and as an extra precaution the user CSS and JavaScript subpage support is now disabled by default. Sites which want this ability may set $wgAllowUserCss and $wgAllowUserJs in LocalSettings.php.

Sounds to me like "Oh noes, someone's figured out how to change someone elses javascript". I can't really understand how a page that only the user who owns it can edit is a security flaw. Seriously. It's like saying "We've killed the mediawiki namespaces after we found out an admin could potentially put bad words there and it'd show up on the entire site!"

I don't understand the reasoning, and more importantly, I miss my customizations. I have seen some great stuff done with user css modding (from mozcom:User:LouCypher) and bet they are also not happy about this. The list of fixes mentions it (third from the end) but doesn't link to bugzilla or any explanation of the problem, other then somehow an attacker can show a logged in user some js? --Me at work 22:06, 4 Feb 2005 (PST)

Wikipedia has it enabled, so I don't see why we shouldn't. I'll see if I can get it switched back on. Angela

[edit] Interwiki Map

Hey, are you ever going to run the script that generates the map? I don't think it's ever been run seeing how many of the older links (suchas creatures:, mozcom:) still aren't working. I haven't actually ever run it myself as I didn't have python on the windows testbox... Ah well, any estimate on when that'll happen? --Me at work 10:31, 7 Feb 2005 (PST)

Bug 60. I mentioned this to Jason on IRC today. I'm not sure what the problem is. Angela 18:26, 7 Feb 2005 (PST)
The interwiki tag idea is ready to be implemented, and I demonstrated how I would do it (but you administrate this wiki and may have a better plan) on Mozilla Community. --Me at work 21:30, 9 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Yes, I think it would good to add that. I'd prefer the URL at the end of the description though. Angela 22:18, 9 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Boxes on a main page

Hi Angela, Any chance of some help please with getting used to doing boxes for a main page? I've been trying to re jig the SCA21 main page in response to comments and intended redesign. After a lot of hit and miss I seem to have got something reasonably how I wanted it, but I'm fairly in the dark as to how. I couldn't find any clear help bits in the places I looked. Wasn't sure what word is used(?) Presume box is assumed to be subset of Table(?). I had a lot of problems from preview not looking like saved version. I copied some mark-up from G Knowledge, and I thought I remembered some problem with this before, but couldn't find your reply. As it seemed to come out so differently so many times it made me wonder if, even though it seems to come out OK now on my browser and computer, is it coming out OK on others?

The mark-up people seem to use for simple boxes seems to vary so much in different examples I tried fathoming out. As there's maybe a fairly common need to put stuff in boxes, particularly for main pages, community portals, etc where often a lot is wanted towards the top, wouldn't it be an idea for there to be some clearer guidance on this somewhere? Or if it already exists some clearer signposting to it?

I'm hoping to change the photo used regularly, but would like to get more confidence in creating what seems ought to be fairly simple effects. Thanks for all your other help and suggestions by the way, Cheers, Philralph 11:23, 7 Feb 2005 (PST)

It looks great. I check in both Firefox 1 and IE 6, and it looks the same in both. There isn't help specifically on boxes, though since they're made of tables, the help at Help:Table should be useful. The possibilities for table design vary so widely that I don't think a help page can give you an example template to use. I think the best way to do main pages is to just copy the wikitext from another wiki and adapt that design.
I'm surprised about the preview not looking right. Which browser are you using and what sort of differences were there?
You might find it easier to update the picture if you moved it to a template. See the example at SCA21:User:Angela/Main Page (diff). If you had the main page like this, you just need to edit SCA21:Template:Featured picture to change the image, rather than trying to find the image code hidden amongst the rest of the main page. Angela 11:57, 7 Feb 2005 (PST)
Hi, Angela Thanks for this. I've changed to using the template as you suggest.
I'm normally using Firefox 1. The main difference between preview and saved versions was in the relative width of the two columns. By trial and error I got to a combination of 46% and 26% which seemed to come out OK (eventually on both preview and saved versions, although a mystery as to why) with a certain width to the picture (I'd had problems getting the text to start beneath the picture, so had also been experimenting with different widths to the picture) As I remember in response to a similar questions you'd said something about the percentages having to add to greater than or less than a particular figure, or better still move to some kind of way of avoiding percentages, but I don't remember what that was, or know how to do this. I probably won't change the picture more than monthly to start with, but as it'll almost certainly be a different shape, I'll need to get more used to finding a way of fixing the column widths to the desired effect indepedent of the picture shape. Philralph 02:24, 8 Feb 2005 (PST)
I think the percentages need to add up to 100%. I'm not sure what the best way to make sure the image always fits is though. Angela 16:31, 8 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Inter Wiki Links

Hello Angela

I have noticed we have zero links to other Wikicities from within Peace Wiki. In attempting to remedy this oversight ... I have run into a snag.
Example: gknowledge:Main_Page leads to:
http://gknowledge.wikicities.com/index.php/Main_Page.
but with a period at the end after "Page". This page, with the period, does not exist.
I can link using gknowledge ...
but would rather not use the external link to do so.
?????? ... or am i missing something very simple? like 2+2=5? ;) Guidance? Thanks. -ts- 16:28, 9 Feb 2005 (GMT)

I've just fixed this in the interwiki map. It will take effect when the map next updates, which ought to happen every 24 hours. Angela 17:14, 9 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Thanks. will give it a test drive. -ts- 00:26, 10 Feb 2005 (GMT)
It appears to work now ... however ... I do have to use the underline in place
of the space or it still has a period at the end.
ie: gknowledge:Main_Page not gknowledge:Main Page
-ts- 20:03, 11 Feb 2005 (GMT)

This doesn't seem to be the case for me. Both gknowledge:Main_Page and gknowledge:Main Page work the same. Angela 10:53, 12 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Memory Alpha move - Loss of admin powers; style sheet

Angela, hi. I am assuming all database moves are complete now with regard to the MA move to Wikia. One slight problem, however. I no longer have admin powers with regard to the wiki, as was previously the case. Is this temporary, or permanent? In addition, my style sheet appears to be broken - text appears black, when it should be white. Since I don't have admin powers at the moment, I can't try and fix it in the general Monobook.css. -- Michael Warren | Talk 22:42, 10 Feb 2005 (GMT)

Admin powers should be back now. Let me know if I've missed anyone. Erik has just fixed the stylesheet. You may to reload the page to see this. Angela 02:52, 11 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Wikilog

I keep seeing ads for it and I'm interested now. Before I went ahead and did it, I thought I'd check to see if you could implement some kind of Bliki mod to keep things clean. Yes, the whole site wouldn't be a Bliki, so I was planning on having a subpage of my page with subpages of that for the archives and individual posts w/comments. But, that's how I'd do it manually. I think it'd be interesting to describe your recentchanges and thoughts of how the wiki was going, I've seen your recentchanges blog and you mention things that happen as well. --Me at work 15:34, 16 Feb 2005 (GMT)

I don't think a blog should take place on the wiki. It's like forcing the software to do something it isn't meant for. MediaWiki is simply not suitable for creating a blog. You wouldn't have the possibility of RSS feeds, or trackback, so you'd lose much of the needed functionality. Having said that, the bloglines blog is also fairly poor, since it doesn't allow comments. Perhaps having something like Wordpress with a shared account between trusted Wikicities' users would be better? Angela 17:53, 16 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Your idea is interesting, but how would one be trusted? A founder, or " or, well... I had a better one a minute ago. phpwiki can do wikiblogs though. I read that mediawiki can't, yet, which I hope will be fixed in the future. Meh, I still like the wikilog idea, as there's something to the ability of wiki linking things while talking about them. --Me at work 18:30, 16 Feb 2005 (GMT)
You could go with the PrincipleOfFirstTrust and trust everyone until they mess up the blog. Angela 02:51, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] In case of emergencies

Who shall we contact? I suppose it's JasonR. I hope everything stays ok while you're gone. Also, since your phone number is going to stop working soon, I can only presume you're moving. Or, you're switching to VoIP only. I'm terrible at guessing. Either way, Good Luck! --Tom talk/Bliki 05:54, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)

My guess would be JasonR for technical, jwales for "policy" decisions . . . but I'd guess most of the latter can probably wait a few days. :-) --GreenReaper(talk) 07:42, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Yes, that's right. Jason is usually on IRC. If not, Terry Foote is, and he can contact Jason. See the advertising page for Terry's phone number. I'm moving to Germany, temporarily at least. Angela 11:10, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)
How's German Dialup treating you? --Tom talk/Bliki 21:49, 28 Feb 2005 (GMT)
The connection is fine. It's the German keyboard that takes some getting used to. FedEx has not yet turned up with my own computer, so I'm hardly online because this laptop is extremely annoying. :) Angela 22:02, 28 Feb 2005 (GMT)
So then, when will you be back up on skype? I want to see if this stuff works and you haven't authorized me yet :( --Tom talk/Bliki 02:19, 3 Mar 2005 (GMT)
What is your user name? I haven't received any requests to authorise anyone. Angela 01:19, 4 Mar 2005 (GMT)
me.at.work
Ok, so I left some "chat" messages for you, apparently those work offline. Yesterday. I came on today and it said my messages hadn't been delivered in 22 hours, so are you not logging onto skype or something? I can understand why if so, you seem to be on dialup. --Tom talk/Bliki 02:31, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)
It's apparently DSL, not dialup, but I don't usually log in to Skype unless I'm actually using it. I did log into about 8 hours ago, but didn't see the messages then. I just logged in and saw them now, so perhaps it's delaying them for some reason? I generally prefer IRC to Skype though. Angela 02:43, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)
Too bad I hate freenode. I prefer only servers with +x, because although it really doesn't provide a ton of security, it's enough to make me happy. Plus, although there is now a mIRC script which does some voice chat, I don't think you have it installed, and it's not as easy to use as Skype. Also, you could leave skype on but not in "skype me" mode, I believe that requires you to accept calls, they are not automatically 'taken'. --Tom talk/Bliki 04:12, 5 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Stargate

[edit] SGCommand

I wish to now delete SGCommand and this account. I am now going under the name of SGCommand and I am creating a new wiki. Thanks in advance! Sir_Dave_of_SGCommand

I can remove you as founder if you want, but I believe a Stargate wiki is needed, so it won't be deleted. Angela 21:09, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] My wiki

Hi, as you are aware I own and operate the Stargate wiki, all I am asking is that you change the name to SGCommand instead of Stargate-1 please. Also, can you put me as the Founder please SGCommand

You may be the founder, but NOT the owner. --LouCypher 22:49, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT+0700)
What Lou said is absolutely right. You don't own the wiki. If you want to own an wiki, I suggest you go to MyOO and buy one. The Title for the wiki is already SGCommand, as can be seen from the title bar. However, URLs are supposed to be easily guessable, so the name for the wiki will remain Stargate, since people are far more likely to be looking for a Stargate wiki than an SGCommand wiki. There was no such user as "SGCommand" when the wiki was created, which is why you were not listed as the founder of it. Are you sure you want to be listed as that, now that you understand this doesn't make you the owner of the wiki? It has to be run as a community project, not as your project. Angela 15:58, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)

1. I meant I control the wiki since I am the Founder, thats what I meant. Sorry for the confusion. 2. I want to be listed as the Founder please SGCommand

Ok, you're on the founders page, but this doesn't mean you have more control over the wiki than anyone else. By the way, you can sign your name using four tildes (~~~~). Angela 17:00, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)
What he meant is he wanted to be a sysop, I believe. --LouCypher 20:35, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Oh. Thanks for explaining. This is done now. Angela 22:01, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)

How do I delete an account? SGCommand

You can't delete an account. See Wikipedia:Account deletion. Angela 19:34, 24 Feb 2005 (GMT)

I want to delete the username Sir Dave of SGCommand since it is mine. Please help SGCommand

You can just stop using the account and redirect the old user name to your current one. Angela 22:02, 28 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Getting Articles on a page

I am having trouble getting aricles on certain pages. I created several articles for 1 category but only 8 are showing. Any way to get the rest of the articles showing? user:SGCommand

Which category is it that is having problems? Angela 22:47, 2 Mar 2005 (GMT)

http://stargate.wikicities.com/wiki/Category:Goa%27ulduser:SGCommand

It's because you have an apostrophe in the category name. It's a known bug that I reported a while ago. I suggest you use the main namespace for articles, rather than writing them on category pages since categories still have a lot of bugs. Angela 01:19, 4 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Recent Changes, Favicons?

I had an Iconnish Idea where the wikis with favicons would have icons by them. Maybe it'd be better to use the "full list of recent changes" and not the one on the short list, but I thought it was a neat idea to share with you. --Tom talk/Bliki 23:26, 25 Feb 2005 (GMT)

I think it's better to display the favicon on each Wikicity descriptions or on the List of Wikicities than on the Recent changes. --LouCypher 03:43, 26 Feb 2005 (GMT)
I'd rather it weren't on the list of Wikicities, since it could make the home page too slow to load. I don't really have any preference between the description pages and recent changes though. Angela 22:02, 28 Feb 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Wikicity categories and sustainability

Hi Angela

Nothing urgent but just wanted to mention this about categories: copied from Wikicity descriptions

There's always a problem with categories and 'Sustainability'. For conventional / traditional categories, such as these, 'Sustainability' is always more than any of these categories. Is there any chance of including 'Sustainability' as a category? Yes, I know there's the view that a lot of people don't know what it means. But I think this is something that actually lots of people around the world are working on. Philralph 10:25, 3 Mar 2005 (GMT)

Do it yourself. Really. I have no idea what Sustainability has to do with any of the wikis, but if you think yours (whatever it may be) has it, just add the line to the Wikicity description of your wiki. When you edit the page you will see quite a few categories (or just a few) on the bottom of the page, just add the proper one to it and you'll be fine. Wikis: Fun, useful, and the ability to do it yourself. --Tom talk/Bliki 17:07, 3 Mar 2005 (GMT)
In another word: Be bold --LouCypher 19:20, 3 Mar 2005 (GMT)
See also Category talk:Wikicity descriptions where I replied. Angela 01:19, 4 Mar 2005 (GMT)

Tried Tom's suggestion, but something else needed to make the category appear? (e.g. on Wikicities main page) Philralph 16:15, 6 Mar 2005 (GMT)
I've added it to the main page. There's nothing automatic about it - you just need to edit pages to add the category tag. Angela 18:14, 6 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Editing Main Page

Hi, I was wondering how you can put a "Featured Article" on the left of the main page and the table of contents on the right? SGCommand

This can be done using tables. See Help:Tables. Or if you just want the TOC on the right without using tables, type
<div style="float:right">
__TOC__
</div>
Angela 12:05, 8 Mar 2005 (GMT)

Any way to add add "Featured article"?SGCommand

You can add this in the same way as you would make any other edit. There is nothing automatic about it - you just add information about a particular article to the main page. See Mac:Main Page for example. Angela 19:11, 8 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Slashdotting Vandals

Note: Not all of these are vandals, but many are blankers (and some replace with some words which aren't so pleasant):

Recent Changes - Mozilla Community / last 3 days, last 100 articles, ips only, hide patrolled

Many (not all) are vandals, and while we're blocking a few, these ips have also appeared (earlier on) here as well, blanking the mainpage and community portal. Just keep a watch out. I apologize for linking to my user page here on slashdot in the post, should have seen that one coming from a mile away. On the brighter side, a bit of attention for wikicities. --Tom talk/Bliki 23:26, 8 Mar 2005 (GMT)

Oh - I'd wondered what you meant by the VG Cats post. I don't think it's anything to worry about. You seem to have enough admins on the wiki to handle a few Slashdot vandals. Angela 00:01, 9 Mar 2005 (GMT)
I made them admins because of it... --Tom talk/Bliki 00:25, 9 Mar 2005 (GMT)
Hmm, some one is using a proxy to vandalise a lot of pages now :/ [Actually, I think they've left now] – Jello2 02:51, 9 Mar 2005 (GMT)
I just commented on this at MozCom:User talk:Me at work. Temporary blocking of open proxies is fine. Angela 03:05, 9 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] System messages

Hi Angela. I finally figured out what happened with the system messages on Hebrew. I simply didn't understand that *all* the system messages appear in the language chosen in user preferences. So only when I am logged off can I see Hebrew messages. By the way, the adds in the Hebrew version are showing up on the correct (left) side in Firefox (though they still do strange things in Explorer).

The user preference choice of languages creates a slight problem: What if a person wants to do what has always been done in Wikipedia, namely to see the system messages in whatever the language of the site actually is?

This is important not only because some people might prefer it, but also for a much more practical reason: Currently, if I am logged in and working on the Hebrew version, the "Special Pages All System Messages" appears in English!! Thus, I cannot even edit it except by changing my language preferences first! Then if I want to change a system message on the English version, I need to change my language preference back to English in order to edit it there.

Also, if I normally view the Hebrew site with English system messages, I don't learn where the Hebrew messages need to be updated. And a lot of them do need fixing. Some are still in English (in the Hebrew version). Currently, rather than {SITENAME} they all still have <ויקיפדיה> = "Wikipedia", which needs to be changed to <מקר> = "Miqra" (as well as namespace, etc.).

So it would seem to me that alongside the language options in "preferences", there should also be an option to choose "default language" for the wiki. Is this possible?Zabek 08:02, 9 Mar 2005 (GMT)

[edit] Google searchbox

Thanks Angela for the code. I have it working fine, but the frame extends right across the page, as opposed to being the same width as the navigation, search and toolbox frames.

I added the code to monobook.php as brion suggested, do I need to add it to the quickbar section of code? and where do i find that? I am using MediaWiki 1.4.

Thanks again, Alison.

This could be a result of me taking out our own Google codes before posting to wikitech. These two lines:
<input type="hidden" name="client" value="pub-123"></input>
<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="GALT:#008000;123:1;"></input>

were originally:

<input type="hidden" name="client" value="pub-4086838842346968"></input>
<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="GALT:#008000;GL:1;DIV:#336699;VLC:663399;AH:center;BGC:FFFFFF;LBGC:336699;ALC:0000FF;LC:0000FF;T:000000;GFNT:0000FF;GIMP:0000FF;FORID:1;"></input>
but if you use those, you could end with any clicks resulting from the ads on the search page giving money to Wikicities (it's only a few cents a week here anyway).
You could try putting those to see if this is the problem. If it's not, then I suggest you ask Jason Richey (jasonr@bomis.com) since he's the person who added this for Wikicities. Angela 12:19, 10 Mar 2005 (GMT)

presumably this is because of the rtl language problems, but the diff page for your
