Wikia - creating communities
[edit] Can the new PHPBB forums be added to our Wikis?
I would prefer that over the straight Wiki forums. I asked at Forum:Can the wiki I admin have its own forum like the new Inside wiki has?, but no staff responded. The person that did respond wasn't sure and said to directly ask a staff member. I went to the IRC channel, but no staff member that I knew was online. The forum is now [[1]] but it's a little buggy at the moment - i will try to get that error message removed. Angela
(talk) 04:16, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, someone e-mailed me on that. I sent him a list of forums to create (just two for now, but I might need them grouped for later). Please note that it doesn't have the right name, favicon, or logo. Will (Talk - contribs) 04:20, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- The new forums have been created, but there are bugs.
- Still no favicon.
- The logo is no correct.
- The Music Topics forum is read only for me. Everyone should be able to post when logged in.
New bug: Each ChristianMusic page has a forum link at the top (in the Quartz skin). However, it links to a non-existant page at c:ChristianMusic:Forum:Index. That needs to be fixed if anyone is to find the forum. Thanks. Will (Talk - contribs) 03:09, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Not again...
Total Rune has been vandalising the RuneScape Wiki again. He keeps claiming crap like "If you delete my page, I'll report you for sysop-power abuse", when he is making personal attacks and the like on his page. I'm getting fed up with him; is it possible to mass block him from Wikia? He doesn't seem to care anymore. --Stinkowing 15:55, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- Just block him, ignore him, and move on. I think there's too much drama around this which is encouraging him to keep coming back. Angela

[edit] Is it possible to have an extension installed?
If at all possible/allowed, we'd like MW:Extension:OggHandler installed at the Pikipedia. For more information, please see this page. - Greenpickle(talk) 15:04, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Pardon me, but I'm the one who is going to upload (most likely) all the files. I have cut them to a length of 15-20 seconds (the actuall melodies are usually 1-2 minutes long). They are samples of what is heard during the different levels. However, that would make about 20 or so samples, which I will not all upload, merely the ones that are more prominent. It is possible for me to upload any type of file (mp³, Wave, AAC, FLAC, GSM, etc.), so should the OggHandler not be possible for some reason, it wouldn't be dramatic. Also, the samples should all fall under the "fair use" so far (we are planning to add more information on copyrights of all the media on the wiki, but please consider that that might require some time).--Prezintenden(talk)13:42, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
Has the matter progressed any further yet? - Greenpickle(talk)
[edit] Content deleting
I wonder if it is possible to delete all pages and images from Wiki at once. Might and Magic Wiki has a problem with users who add copied, copyrighted content - both articles and images - from other sites on this topic, without adding neither source information nor copyright status. That's the way I ask you to delete all articles and images from there. As I remember, some months ago similar situation occured at Wikimedia's French Wikisource. Could you do the same with Might and Magic Wiki? There are some users who'd like to work on re-established project. Anyway, thank you for interest. Michał 13:45, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki clone?
Now that the Total Rune fiasco is over with, I have a question. We have the normal RuneScape wiki (for community usage), the Dark RuneScape Wiki (for scam prevention), the RuneScape Fanfiction Wiki (for fake items and such) and UnRuneScape (haven't been on there). However, a fifth RuneScape Wiki, known as the RuneScape Addicts Wiki, has popped up, and it looks...suspicious. Let me see how many things I can remember that's wrong with it:
- Nuetral-Point-of-View (NPOV) gone-most of their articles are biased and opinionated. The real RSW has a NPOV policy that prevents things like opinions from working their way into articles.
- Poorly-written articles-Usage of Internet slang, RS lingo, player slang, and all caps are abundantly evident.
- Little understanding of a community-the entire RSAW community (if you can call it that) is based on the HUGE forums, which pretty much dwarf the Wiki. It also has a small handful of rude users who are almost never editing on the actual wiki, and who think that adminship is absolute power. Those that do are in a competition to see who can make the most articles before a deadline, thus leading to the sloppiness of articles.
- No undestanding of adminship-the lone sysop on the RSAW does not have a user page, and his talk page is blocked from anyone editing it.
I'm NOT asking you to shut down that Wiki. I would simply like you to investigate it, as it is basically copying and poorly paraphrasing our hard work. Also, it appears they are not set up on Wikia. Here's a link: http://www.runescapeaddicts.com/Main_Page Thank you. --Stinkowing 13:18, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wiki name as displayed in messages
A few days ago I posted the following on the Help forum:
- "There are a number of system messages in which the name of the Wiki is displayed as a part of the message. In the case of one I run, it is shown as "Radio-TV broadcast history." Since this is the title of the Wiki, I think it should display as "Radio-TV Broadcast History" (note the capitalization). Is there something I can edit to fix this, or does Central Wikia have to do the change, and if the latter, how do I request it?"
The responses seemed to be to contact the Community Team, but the page on the Community Team referred back to the Forum. Nobody from the Team seems to have noticed my post, however, so I'm putting my post here where, hopefully, it'll be read. -- BruceG 21:03, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] re:Deleting a whole wiki
Yes, I'm talking about Polish MM Wiki. At our forum we've reached a consensus, that it's better to remove all pages and reopen the wiki with something like NWN/NWN2 Wiki feel, with focusing more on games' mechanics than on its plot. I hope using this bot to delete all content - articles, meta-pages, images and so on - is not a big problem. Sorry for causing trouble. The only thing we would like to maintain is our logo. [edit] #wikia-halo
You registered #wikia-halo for us, 27 weeks ago... shortly after, cchristianTP registered #halopedia, and that's what the community chose to use officially, so now #halo-wikia is just sitting there with no visitors, and nothing telling them to go to #halopedia. Because of that, you're the only person on the access list, so there's nothing that can be done to get people to the right place, apart from sitting in there waiting for visitors... so when you get the time, can you please set mode's +if #halopedia? [edit] Help!
Hi Angela,
I need help on two wikis
On egamia is there a way to make a bot to auto categorize specific gaming platforms on game pages which is determined by the categories in the section "platforms =" on the infobox template? I know there is probably a way because wikipedia is well categorized.
On egamia we use to have a bot which counts the all the games we had on the site. Is there a way to count the games
On orchids wiki I also have a similar problem. Counting the links under Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Infobox would solve the problem. Is there any wiki text that does this?

[edit] Burnout Paradise wiki
Hi i am the parkster and i have requested a new wiki for the new game; Burnout paradise. It said that the wiki, if accepted, would be made in two days since the request was first posted but now, it has been about four days since the request started and i have had no feedback on the subject at all (to do with it's sound creation) and so i don't know what step to take next as it is too risky for me to advertise and prepare, if i don't know whether the wiki will actually be accepted. Can you please message me on what is going to happen so i am clear about my next phase of action. [edit] pl.mightandmagic
Thank you very much for your help, but one thing is incorrect. In the Wikia's name, the genitive ("Mocy i Magii" - of Might and Magic, Might and Magic's) is used incorrectly there. Nominative ("Moc i Magia" - Might and Magic) should be used. But as it is understandable for Poles, it's not very important case, so I'd be pleased if you simply do this if you have really more time to spend in work ;) Michał 15:32, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] New forums at ChristianMusic

Several.
- I have no access to the Music forum. All I see on that page is "You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum."
- I asked for some changes via e-mail that weren't implemented:
- New/Renamed forums:
- Problems and Suggestions group would become "Administration".
- Problems and Suggestions forum would become "Announcements" and would keep the existing topic. That forum would be read only to everyone but me.
- New forum: "Forum Sandbox" -- Would work like a normal Wiki sandbox. All posts need to be automatically deleted after 1 day.
- New forum: "Problems"
- New forum: "Suggestions"
- Forum Descriptions:
- Administration:
- Announcements: "All the latest news on the Christian Music Wiki"
- Problems: "Got a problem with the Christian Music Wiki or its forums? Discuss it here."
- Suggestions: "Did you come up with a way to make the Christian Music Wiki look or function better? Perhaps you have an idea how to attract new editors and/or visitors. Bring it up here. Details will tend to be appreciated, but all suggestions will be considered."
- Forum Sandbox: "Learn how to post in these forums here. All posts will be deleted after 24 hours."

[edit] two things
Coming across some vandalism on NSider wiki I noticed that the licensing information on edit pages had a link error:
You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource. DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION! Once you submit materials to the NSider Wiki, they are released under <a href="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/">this license</a>.
There is no active admin on that wiki, so I was wondering if you could fix the link?
[edit] My Latest Wiki Request
Hi Angela
I recently suggested a wiki that would be for the purpose of helping new users see the benefits of learning and using wiki software. I called it "Wikia Testimonials". To be honest this is not what I would spend my valuable time maintaining but I thought it was a good way to get some of you interested. If you see my point regarding spreading the word. A large number of new users are quite puzzled by what goes on here. Myself included. But I like the way the software handles so much that I wanted to encourage you to consider adding a testimonials link. I know this is open source and the word Testimonials is often associated with commercial products so maybe there is a better way. In the meantime I truly believe the timing is right for this idea now that some poor reviews have surfaced.

[edit] Hiya, me again
I was hoping for a while now that someone else would step up to being an admin for WikiStates, but that's apparently not going to happen. I didn't want to seem annoying (I've already requested a position of adminship on two Wikias), but now I really need to ask again. If administrating three Wikia sites is too much, in your opinion, I can easily give up adminship on one or both of them, since they don't get a whole lot of traffic anyway. [edit] Double toolbar patch
Hi!. As you know, on MW1.12 wikias, on Monobook there's a double edit toolbar. I don't know when it will get fixed (as it isn't an emergency) but if you think is good, there's a code that can be put in MediaWiki:Global.js to patch it until it gets fixed [8]. It also prevents the MiniUpload button to appear, since it's broken. If no, there's no problem, I'll put it in the forum so individual wikis could patch it if they want, just wanted to have a more global solution and the patch could be removed also globally when gets fixed. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 20:14, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- I'm afraid no. Look [9] for example. The function that adds the toolbar (mwSetupToolbar()) is called twice when the page loads, using hookEvent("load", mwSetupToolbar);, the first here and the second here, so the buttons are added twice. In fact, seems that all the code in wikibits.js is repeated in allinone.js, so this is just one visible the problems -there are others, yes. I'd done a hard reload of the page, in firefox and internet explorer.
- Oh, and this happens only in monobook, but my patch works well for any skin, because in case that there's no toolbar (exactly less than 5 images in the toolbar, because somebody (like me) could had added some buttons "by hand", I put 5 as example) 2 seconds after the load finishes, it calls the mwSetupToolbar() to set it up. So the patch should be put inside an if (skin!=monobook) or something. Note that I put the patch in Common.js, so you can test that the toolbar still appears in other skins. --Ciencia Al Poder (talk) -WikiDex 18:44, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Search
Also, after some chat with the community on #searchwikia and the approval from Jimbo, it would be best that ConfirmEdit for new external links be added to search.wikia to help filter spambots from real people creating mini articles. If you would find some time to turn that on.
Thanks a lot! :) --CharitwoTalk 07:46, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm afraid that the example use of OggHandler here doesn't seem to work. - Greenpickle(talk)
It still doesn't work. I know my computer has the appropriate plugins, as it works for me at Wikipedia. The error given is Not allowed http://images.wikia.com/genealogy/images/b/b1/%27s_Kitchen1.2.ogg, so there must be some installation error. - Greenpickle(talk)
- If I may add here, IE 7, as well as Firefox, with Windows Vista and the Quicktime player that is installable from the link, works superbly. However, the advised Java player still gives the same message as Greenpickle mentioned.--Prezintenden(talk) 14:43, 10 January 2008 (UTC)

Support for the favicon will be added soon. The music forum is working for me. Can you see this post? I've asked the tech team to make the forum name changes since the interface to edit these directly on the wiki seems to have stopped working. Angela
(talk) 12:24, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
- No. Just a similar message. I see the forum in the forum list again, but it doesn't work as before. As for favicons, many pages at ChristianMusic use the default W icon.
Would you prefer to use the normal wiki-based forums (like these)? We don't really have any staff who understand how to use phpbb well enough to resolve these problems. I can't find any reason why post would not be visible to you. Angela
(talk) 04:18, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- No. I specifically waited rather than implementing them because of problems with that system. Those included things like confusing thread layouts (for the typical user predicted for Christian Music, that wouldn't take much). Will (Talk - contribs) 20:09, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Music Wiki Forums
Hi happy new year,
Thanks for making me an admin over at w:c:Music things seem to be going well
Just a few questions:
- Are you able to add some forums to Music for us as there don't seem to be any? I left a message for JohnQ about this here, but i guess he is busy
- What is the difference in purpose between tunes wiki and music wiki, and could they be merged?
- Could a music hub be created here on central? as none of the music realted wikias appear to be doing that well
I hope this is not asking too much
--Anarchyuk (talk) 18:55, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ahh, according to the breadcrumbs below the search box on music, music is under miscellaneous, which is a bit weird. if you could move it to entertainment and then i'd be happy to discuss the possibility of a music hub with danny. But i feel entertainment is more appropriate than miscellaneous.

[edit] Fanon vs. Fan Fiction
At Halo Fanon and Fanon Wiki, I've suggested that their names be changed to "Halo Fan Fiction" and "Fan Fiction Wiki," respectively. On Halo Fanon, more people are in support of the name change than are against, and ('cause discussion counts more than votes anyway), only one person has any reason not to change the name, and their reason promotes the incorrect definition of "fanon" anyway. I was wondering if you could take a look, and maybe even change the name if you think enough people are in support for all the right reasons, and all that rot. Fanon Wiki doesn't really have any community, though, other than JMan2.0, so the only vote is mine, in support. Yeah. Thanks! =D Guesty-Persony-Thingy 23:46, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
- K... some people at Halo Fanon were wondering when the debate would close, which is the only reason I asked this soon... I'll go start the same forum on any other "Fanon" wikis, and get back to you. =D Guesty-Persony-Thingy 22:32, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm... the majority of people seem to think different things based on where you go. At Halo Fanon, 4:3 people agree:disagree with the name change. So far as SWFanon, 0:2 people agree... but at Halo Fanon, most people actually have reasons not to change it, while, at SWFanon, they seem to have the opinion of "it's always been this so it shouldn't change." And, like you say, all should be changed at once... how about a vote on Central or something? Because this is sort of a big issue, and people's opinions shouldn't be distorted by what everyone on their wiki thinks. Bye! Guesty-Persony-Thingy 04:36, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Brandon Rhea here. I'm an Administrator over at Star Wars Fanon. No offense to GPT intended or anything, but if this name change thing is so important then perhaps someone from Wikia staff should be sent to suggest this name change rather than someone who has never contributed to our community outside of talk pages. Also, this is only a suggestion that he posted. He never said we needed to do this, nor has a Wikia staff member, so I don't see why this is being pushed on us to begin with. --Brandon Rhea (talk)
- I would appreciate an answer to this as soon as possible. --Brandon Rhea (talk)
I never paniced, as this is hardly something to panic over. I just wanted to know why, if this is so important, a Wikia staff member didn't come to us instead. --Brandon Rhea (talk)
- If you could, could you please go and post here and kindly ask that anonymous users who are not part of our community don't register accounts just to tell us that people will mock us for our content? It's disrespectful and is reflecting poorly on Wikia. Thank you in advance. --Brandon Rhea (talk)
I may have misunderstood you, but is the User:The truth about fanon a sockpuppet of a registered member of Star Wars Fanon? If so, who is it? Sockpuppeting is against our policies, and we'd like to deal with this if this person is a sockpuppet of another member. Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks! :D --Brandon Rhea (talk)
[edit] editor behavior
Hi. I go to a Wikia to experiment edit and practise my English. It is call Final Fantasy Wiki. I make correction and small article so that when I come back I can make it big later, but the man in charge delete it. Then come a lot of editor they harass me and insult my English. one of them this guy: "Maverick King - Hannibal Lecter eats all including your precious Auron and Sephiroth: TALK - When the lambs stopped screaming Why you no like help? We only help you, you no need to be donkey about help. Lorr supposed be lol right? You talk about all action bu you no have userpage yet. lorr. go back dry cleaning" this what he say to me. So I no good English, but I add article for the wiki. Then I got ban. The editor in that Wiki not very good to newcomer. This where they talk to me User talk:60.49.50.231 . I now create account and try learn how to edit better, but the people in that wiki they need to learn how to behave to newcomer. Thank you and keep good working. Samseng 09:26, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] AutoCAD wiki
Hi, Angela. I hope you are having a nice day, and that Wikia is doing well. I am a very new immigrant here from Wikipedia, where you welcomed me graciously in 2003 at the Book of Mormon page, and I have since become an admin and all. It has been a wonderfully transforming experience for me. You did a great thing being nice to me then.
Anyway, I am looking carefully into starting a meaningful wiki for the DWG/AutoCAD/Intellicad/Bricscad/CAD(maybe) community, and I see that you made the first edit to AutoCAD wiki in Feb 2007 here. Pretty much nothing has happened since then, and I am wondering if you could point me in the direction of the original requester for that wiki. Thanks a million! Tom Haws 17:40, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Here's a little more info on where I may be headed. I am coordinating this with others so that we do this right. So movement may be a little slow. I may want to adopt the AutoCAD wiki, since no action has happened since February. I would propose leaving the current owner's rights intact, and then giving me bureaucrat and sysop rights there. But not yet. I also may be interested in "renaming" or "moving" the AutoCAD wiki to DWGWiki (more Corporation/Software agnostic, if you know what I mean; there do exist AutoCAD clones) or CADWiki (huge scope and lots of softwares), depending on my talks. Would that be possible? It only has like two pages currently, one of which I added last week, and two templates I added. I believe there is demand in the huge online DWG community for this, so I want to do it right and keep my eyes and ears open. Any help you can give me, Angela, will be golden. Tom Haws 20:02, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- I've left you a reply on AutoCAD wiki. Angela

- Thank you so much, Angela. I see you have even made yourself a user page there! I am so new to Wikia I am not sure what all the conventions, etc. are here, so I'm replying to you here. I am in active talks this week with AutoCAD community folks, and I will be making some tests. Hopefully I can settle on a URL and name within a week or two. Can you please give me a pointer to an explanation of Wiki naming and urls at Wikia? Thanks Tom Haws 14:41, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Warcraft wiki
Hello Angela I am Dark Overlord and I want to start a warcraft wiki for info about the Strategy games and sent a request, but I know I alone can't make it all, so in any way could you help me make my wiki dream come true? Ultimate Doom 04:11, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
- I'm going to seek some other opinions on this to check it doesn't conflict with existing wikis we have. Angela

[edit] Next step after bureaucrat
I recall one of the requirements of becoming a steward on wikia as being at least 18. Well, that was possibly a year ago, and I've recently turned 18, so now I'm wondering what other requirements I must meet, and what else I should get around to doing, before I can become a steward. I've been active on Fiction Wikia for a long time now with over 10,000 edits large and small, and have been bureaucrat of multiple wikias for a while. What other qualifications do I need? --Yunzhong Hou 20:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Improving Traffic and others.
Angela,
I just sure hope that haven't been bugging you about the tiniest things (sorry if I am), but I need a bit more advice please.
1.) What are some ways to improve traffic to a wikia? 2.) Are there widgets for these wikis? 3.) How can I put links on the toolboox navigation like you can for the main navigation?
Thank you very much,
Asoue1286
[edit] Interwiki li
Hello Angela! Could you please interwiki landj.wikia.com (li) with stad.wikia.com (nl) nation.wikia.com (en) citta.wikia.com (it) and rowikicity.wikia.com (ro)? --Oos Wes Ilava (Bès) 06:05, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Wikia Spotlight image
Hello,
Here is the Wikia Spolight image for A Wiki of Unfortunate Events. Please do what you need to do with it. It is a bit sloppy looking, but that is the way it uploaded.
Thanks,

[edit] Administrative Powers...
I herd you can give me administrative powers over at Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Maker Wikia. Since the original administrator is absent, and I am rather active over there, I thought I could be an administrator of the site.

[edit] Rappelz
Hello, I have recently begun to update the Rappelz wikia. I plan on activly improving this wiki and advertising it to everyone in the game. However there are several things I need to fix that require an administrator, and the only one seems to have stopped working on the page... If you could grant me administrative abilities I could clean up the page and hopefully we will get more editors for the page soon. Thank you for your consideration on this request. [edit] Welcome Not Too Welcomed
I recently started using the Who's Online feature and found that there were two brand-new users who had not posted on Novelas had already registered an account and were supposedly surfing the wikia. So I preemptively sent them each a welcome message, assuming that since they were listed in the who's online section they evidently were browsing the site. These users are Graestan and Jedimca0. They both responded very negatively, threatening to report me to wikia for sending the welcome message before either of them had posted (even though they had registered an account and were on the site), saying that it was harassment. They seem very much to be the same people, based on their replies.
So, is there a breakdown in the tech feature, or are these people wikia staff who are passively on these sites very often, or are they just touchy people? Because I don't see how they could just jump to the conclusion that I'm at fault here.
--Yunzhong Hou 21:46, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- This is very strange, I know Graestan, and he does not seem like the type of person who would respond negatively to a Welcome message. I cannot speak for Jedimca0, as I do not know him. Neither are members of Wikia Staff. This is no different from when we had a new user log on our wiki, when the account was registered, someone would usually place a welcome template on their talk page Which is essentially the same thing, but as Wikias user database is shared, I am for certain they did not just create an account. Graestan has been around for quite a while. --CharitwoTalk 22:02, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry if that's the way it went down, but I find it rather odd that Jedimca0 and I, who are friends and only connected through Wookieepedia, seemed to be the only two who had received such a message in that time period. I only responded in the light I did due to the way in which Yunzhong Hou replied when Jedimca0 sent him a query regarding why he had received the message. At any rate, I'm sorry there was a misunderstanding, but again, my actions had more to do with the very unusual connection. Graestan(
