Wikia - creating communities
[edit] Welcome
Hi, Angies. Welcome! Hope you're having lots of fun at Wikia. --CocoaZen 02:31, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fancy
Hi Angie: Excellent, I love the fancy signature! You can also put a link to your talk page in the signature too. If you want to try it, then copy this into the Nickname box on your preferences page:
-- angies (talk)
and check the box under it that says "Raw signatures".
Then when you type ~~~~ at the end of a talk post, your fancy signature appears automatically.
At that point, you're officially a geek, and we issue you a pocket protector. -- Danny (talk) 21:55, 3 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Product Development With MediaWiki Platform
Hello Angie,
My name is Jeff Howard and my team and I have developed a nifty navigation application that integrates with the MediaWiki platform. Our goal is to encourage universities to begin using our product next fall, in particular division one universities. I would enjoy having the chance to discuss our application's usages and benefits with you sometime soon. Unfortunately, I can’t spill the beans publicly over this channel but I am available anytime for discussion at JeffreyMHoward@gmail.com or at 814-397-6791.
Sincerely,
Jeff Howard www.questionscompany.com
Hi Angie-
You asked if my wiki was intended "to make the content about the ins/outs of working in "the entertainment industry" as a professional?" or more about "news and information on actors, directors, movies, etc..." It is the former. In Theindustry's description I have placed a kind of mission statement to that effect. I also checked out the entertainment wiki you http://entertainment.wikia.com and I am not trying to create that kind of "pop" page but I will add it to my links so visitors can go there for their topical info and forums. Theindustry is intended to be a 'pulling back of the curtain' of sorts.
Thank you,
Ted Willett ted@localcolorfilms.com
Hi Angie,
You commented on my wiki that it may be more fun to join on the gaming wiki than to create a wiki on the Gamecube http://requests.wikia.com/index.php?title=GCN&t=20070411081047 but i feel that i'd like to try the challenge of starting so the Gamecube has its very own Wiki not just being housed in a general gaming wiki.
Thank you

[edit] MediaWiki:Copyright warning
Angies, I reverted your change. At least one of the links didn't work, and the removal of some of the other standard stuff was probably unwise on such a frequently-seen page concerning copyright. I suggest you put your ideas on the Talk page to see what more senior Wikians think. Robin Patterson 00:44, 25 April 2007 (UTC)
OK, thanks for the explanation. (I had looked at this page, to see whether you might be an over-enthusiastic newcomer; but I hadn't looked at your user page. And I suppose your arrival was heralded somewhere that I should have seen. Careless old fellow!) The change is good in terms of simplicity. Is it meant to become the standard for individual Wikia? Robin Patterson 01:14, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Just leaving you a message...
[edit] Hi there Angies...
Thanks, I love to develop the categorical infrastructure on wikis in general, and I LOVE WIKIA WIKIS SO VERY MUCH!! :) :) Have an excellent day. Jeb 02:48, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

In the interest of keeping track of context and keeping conversations all in one place, I've directly responded to you on my talk page at AliceSoftWiki. Oh, and your signature is broken. It's currently talk, missing a space beween "user" and "talk". -Afker 03:52, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] StarCraft (II) wiki
"I think between the Starcraft community you've created here and the support of the wowwiki guys we have a shot of really having the best Starcraft 2 wiki. Have you thought about spinning off Starcraft 2 into its own wiki? I know Final Fantasy and EQ communities have started new wikis for each game so wanted to get your thoughts."
Actually no, mainly because the storyline of the universe directly continues (sort of like the three Command & Conquer games). Each Final Fantasy game (except X-II) is effectively a different universe with shared features. I don't know about EQ though.
"Also, if you don't already know them I think it would be great to chat with the wowwiki folks, Vlad is great and they have done some really smart things to grow their community and really partner with Blizzard. Let me know if you want an intro."
I would love that. The Wowwiki looks much more professionally done than what I'm working with at the StarCraft wiki. User Talk: PsiSeveredHead 12:18, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
"Do you know which fan sites/forums, etc are the best for finding Starcraft fans? Wikia would be willing to buy some ads or do some kind of contest (free 1 yr subscription, etc) to try to encourage more people to check out and join this wiki.. From a timing perspective, do you think that would be a good idea now or better to wait until the game goes into beta and there is stuff to right about? angies (talk) 20:07, 2 June 2007 (UTC)"
There's not that many StarCraft fan sites that I'm familiar with. I think the most popular are StarCraft Legacy (www.blizzforums.com), Infoceptor and Starcraft.org (www.warboards.org).
It's probably better to wait until beta to do paid advertising.
User Talk: PsiSeveredHead 12:18, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] BlizzCon
"Wikia is thinking about sponsoring 1-2 people from the Wowwiki and Starcraft communities to go to Blizzcon August 3th-4th in Anaheim, Ca. Is this something your community would be interested in? I am hoping your response is a Hell YA"
It is!
"in which case my next question is what do you think is the best way to decide who goes? Should we do a lottery? a contribution drive? Limit it to admins or open it to all contributors?"
I think it should be open to all, not just the administrators. (In fact, I couldn't go myself! Even if someone paid for the tickets and accomodations I can't afford to skip work.) I like the idea of a lottery and a contribution drive... I think the lottery might be a bit more fair, though.
"Another option is that instead of paying for 1 person's full expenses we could spread the funds across 2-3 people and pay for 1/3 of each..Maybe this would be more fun? In addition to showing our appreciation for all your hard work, we would also expect the person we sponsor to dedicate some of their time to promoting their wiki and Wikia (meet with gamer press, blizzard reps, etc). Let me know what you think!"
I think it's a great idea. I don't know if we could split the funds; the trip is pretty expensive for anyone who doesn't live in California, and even at two-thirds price the lucky winner might find that they can't afford to go.

We have a bit of a problem here. The deadline is coming up and no one has signed up. I don't know why; I tried advertising at the popular forums. We need to talk about this at some point. User Talk: PsiSeveredHead 11 June 2007 (UTC)
hmm... I can try to post about it on Wow Wiki to see if we can smoke out any Starcraft fans there. At the end of the day though, this was meant to be a token of appreciation to the starcraft community at Wikia, so I would prefer not to try to pull people in who have not been part of this community to date. Have you asked any of the contributers why they are not interested? angies (talk) 17:59, 11 June 2007 (UTC)
News: someone finally signed up, so there's one position left.

[edit] Nominations Made
The nomination period has closed, and we did get recent but vigorous editor Chibiabos to sign up. If we can send two people, then I can go too. PsiSeveredHead 14:41, 23 June 2007 (UTC)
- Does that mean I get to go? :P I seriously do need to know if I can go so that I can request the time off of work (and if they say no to that, I'll quit! lol), its just a little over a month away. --Chibiabos 03:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)
So where did you go for vacation? Anyway, I'm going to send you an email from theovermind(at)fastmail(dot)fm - my hotmail account is mainly for MSN Messenger use.
By the way, I'm going to request an IRC channel for the StarCraft wiki. Who do I ask? PsiSeveredHead 21:33, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Donut from the OverWiki
Thank you for your support and kind words. I'll look into the sites you mentioned, I'm glad that you took the time to help me out. Also, thanks for placing us in the rotation, that should help a lot. Although, i won't be able to work on any of that for about two weeks, as I'm leaving for Germany June 13. Again, thank you for your time, hopefully when i return there will be new members to greet me.

Hi Afker, thanks for the interest. Can you send me an email at angie at wikia with your CV, and how many hours you could work this summer. Note, that this is an unpaid internship for university credit. angies (talk) 23:35, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Angie, I'd be intrested in an internship at Wikia too. I'm looking for something more general than just gaming Wikia wikis, if possible. To help out people in general, block cross-wiki vandals, create new wikis and so on. I'd be happy to talk more about this.
- Best regards,

[edit] Subdomains possible?
Hi, I'm admin/founder of the cnc (Command & Conquer) wiki. As you might be aware, in the Command & Conquer series of games, there are 3 different "universes" (storylines), and there is a fair amount of confusion among them for two reasons:
- In the "original" universe, there is a "fork" where, the storyline splits in two.
- When the company that made the C&C games (Westwood) was bought by EA, EA released a new C&C games, with a new, completely different storyline, creating a 3rd "universe".
For these reasons, I was wondering if subdomains that are not related to languages are possible. Specifically, would it be possible to have "ra2.cnc.wikia.com" and "generals.cnc.wikia.com"? Thanks in advance for advice, -- 22:34, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Warhammer Online BETA keys
thanks for getting 10 beta keys for our community. Erdimus (talk) 07:47, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure whether to mention this, and it's probably a bit late anyway, but did one of the winners (Schwagles bagels) actually meet the criteria? During the period (August 1st - September 3rd) he made only 5 edits (though he does have 50 prior to august). It may be too late, or maybe I'm misunderstanding the criteria, but I felt since I noticed I should mention.
In any case as Erdimus said, a big thanks for the great competition and swift notification, keep up the good work! --Karrion 01:40, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
I sent an email to you about the beta key. Hoping to hear from you. - ClydeJr 00:40, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Hello
...ah, such a boringly simple subject line... I'll make due. Anyway, just wanted to give you a thanks for fixing up the GuildWiki entry I added on the gaming portal; quite an eloquent, yet short explanation. From the sounds of it, you play Guild Wars? I could be mistaken of course, perhaps you simply knew of the areas already. :D Just asking out of curiosity, of course. -- Ĵĩôřũĵĩ Đēŗāķō.>.cнаt^ 08:34, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the thanks on my page, hehe. Oh, and if you want to respond here, I always keep every page I edit on my watchlist, just in case.
- gasp* PanSola plays Guild Wars?! I never knew! Hehe. I'm actually more surprised to find out that he's been on Wikia all this time. Such a mysterious character! I must keep my eye on him. :P -- Ĵĩôřũĵĩ Đēŗāķō.>.cнаt^ 20:44, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Halopedia H3 Launch Contest
Dear Angies,
GPT drafted a set of rules here. If you're going to make contact with Bungie, I'd recommend going through Bungie.net and speaking to "Frankie". While the main Bungie community manangers are "Sketch Factor" and "lukems", Frankie appears to be the most receptive to community messages.
I know that we've discussed several times before that in the event that you manage to contact Bungie, a possibly advantageous PR move would be a "Humpday Challenge" of Halopedia vs. Bungie. Other ideas are some sort of collaboration between Bungie and the Halopedia Podcast or Halopedia and the Bungie Podcast, etc...any mention on their main page would be great as well. The last time we had a minor mention on Bungie's main page, site traffic tripled. =]
Best of luck!
Cheers,
RelentlessRecusant 20:36, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Dear Angies, saw your posts on Halopedia. Best of luck with the contest! As I said, the community managers at Bungie often keep themselves aloft from specific fans, and just normally interact with the community as a whole, so I unfortunately I have contact information for them via emal. Your best bet to get in touch with them is to set up a profile at Bungie.net and private-message their profiles. =] A banner would probably be best be made by GPT: he's really crazy good with Photoshop. ^^ If you need any help at all with the contest, feel free to let me know...or if not, I'm just hoping to get that lithograph! =] Cheers, RelentlessRecusant 17:07, 17 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Halopedia Pagetitle
Hi Angie! :)
I just wanted to let you know I've tweaked the pagetitle slightly, because it was kind of big (didn't all show in my browser) and we do have content other than Halo 3. I hope this is ok with you.
However, I've kept the name-drop for Halo 3 in there, as well as for walkthroughs and weapons.
Drop me a message on my central talk page, or on Halopedia, I'm not fussed either way.
Regards,

Also, I just spotted an error in your signature. At the moment the coding is this:

It should be this, with no c: in the talk section.

[edit] Halopedia Halo 3 Launch Contest rules
Hi Angies, I have some questions about the rules for the contest. On the contest page it says that edits for the contest have to be in Category:Halo 3, but according to GPT, all edits to Halo 3-related pages count. Also, what counts as a "good" edit? I also asked GPT about this, but he only said "anything that's not vandalism," which isn't very specific? If you get a chance to respond, thanks. :) Phil.e. [Talk to me] 00:04, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Halopedia Halo 3 Launch Contest
Hi Angie,
GPT has been telling users they will be disqualified if they have not entered their details in by "tomorrow", but this isn't very specific, considering users are from all different timezones.
Would you be able to post something saying when all details should have been finalised? I think there needs to be a time period after the contest ends, because most people have been concentrating on making the edits, not counting them.
Cheers,
Manticore Talk | Contributions 02:22, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- Tomorrow's the big day? By my calculations, tomorrow's the *last* day, so they *should* have until the end of tomorrow to get their stuff done with. I updated the Sitenotice and the IRC channel topic and posted messages on everyone's talk page... like Manticore says, I told them they'd be disqualified if they don't have it all in, but I guess saying by tomorrow was wrong, as I figured out *after* leaving the messages that they have until the end of tomorrow. As he says, though, we dunno what timezone to end it at... leaving the messages as early in the day as I did will gie everyone at least 24 hours to get done, and that should be plenty of time. Even if they don't all check Halopedia once a day, most people check their email once a day, and they have to have an email set to qualify anyway, so... yeh. I didn't get around to spot checking... because I forgot.. but I'll get around to that later "today" (probably go to bed first, but it's after midnight. =P), so... yehh. You say on wednesday, I say on thursday... I guess you can do the drawing at whatever time's best (about 24 hours from now is best, IMO) and announce the winners yerself. You'll have to contact the winners anyway, 'cause you're mailin' out prizes, so that all works out, so... yehhh. See you around! --NOTASTAFF GPT(talk)(eating) 07:23, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- /me smacks GPT and Manticore for not realizing that. Anywho, you said 12 UTC... which was about nine hours ago, wasn't it? I think we should extend the contest 12 more hours, so it ends in three hours... or something, 'cause it was about 21 hours ago when I sent out all the talk page things. \o/ --NOTASTAFF GPT(talk)(eating) 21:08, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Huh?
Angies, What's up with the H3 launch contest? You said there weren't enough qualifiers to give away all the prizes, but I wasn't listed. I checked the whole list and everyone who qualified won something except me. I had 32 edits in the time frame, on time and properly logged. Did I do something wrong? What's up? Contact me at Halo Wiki, since for some reason I don't show up on central wikia. Polaris117 23:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
