[edit] Changing Wiki Names

As it has been recently announced, MechScape will not be the name of the upcoming MMORPG from Jagex, meaning the MechScape Wiki will need a name change. As I've looked at it, the Stellar Dawn Wiki exists, but is closed. As with recent trademarks and registries, it's looking good that Stellar Dawn will be the name on release, so is it possible at all for the MechScape Wiki to reserve this name and URL in such event. Joe does not have the power to get a wiki deleted and has been warned. All sides of this conflict appear to be doing things to irritate the others so please don't participate. I don't know if this really matters what I say, but from my point of view Ironknuckle1 started the fight. He stirred up the trouble and just when we started to get the drama to subside. Joe might not have made the most level-headed of responses, but I've heard rumors on Stal wikia that there might be a prank to get back at Joe, most likely. Ironknuckle even has offered Admin rights to anyone who supported Shade Link, and because Shade Link and Joe are despise eachother, anybody who was anti-Joe in some way. On a side note, this has been the first time I've genually hated loging on to Wikia, and am considering leaving because of this whole Shade Link/EveryDayJoe45 thing. I'm not going to say to get too mad about it, just that I'm really.....frustrated that this picked up again.-- C2 / CC 00:52, September 11, 2009 (UTC)

Another sad example of how rip-off wikis hinder Wikia's performance. You guys must have a lot of patience... Anyways, speaking from experience, if both sides are unwilling to resolve the situation, why not remove their admin powers? Then the wikis would no longer be "their wikis", and be just wikis that they contribute to. This might also reduce the chance of this happening again. For the record, I also recommend one last warning- to both of them. Ajraddatz "Raddatz to Enterprise" Age of Empires Wiki 151 Edits!

If cross-wiki conflicts continue then local bans, removal of powers, or even sitewide blocks may be in order, but I think it's best to encourage people to ignore each other. The existence of small wikis doesn't harm big wikis in any way; if small wikis become bigger wikis then they will have a large enough community to rationally discuss mergers or differentiation of multiple projects (instead of trying to "talk sense" into one or two people who may already be dissatisfied with existing communities).

As we describe in Wikia:Creation policy, we believe that people are better off working on single strong wikis than creating multiple duplicates, and we encourage active communities to politely(!) make new duplicate wiki founders aware of what's already been done.

However, we've come to understand that we can't guess ahead of time which ideas will take off or which admins will turn out to be good leaders. We would rather let everyone try their hand at building a wiki, let them compete for search engine rankings and visitors, and let those which don't add good unique content and attract good editors die off in their own time. Over time long-abandoned wikis will be closed, useful content merged, and useful domains redirected to more active wikis. — Catherine (talk) 22:27, September 28, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Call of Duty Wiki power abuse

Over on the Call of Duty Wiki, where I am a bureaucrat, two sysops (Rs4life07/"Bigm", bureaucrat and Darkman 4, administrator) abused their powers and permanently banned Callofduty4, a dedicated and trusted user.

Here's what happened:

Callofduty4 nominated himself for adminship on August 27^th, which later closed on September 7^th after an inability to reach any consensus.

Four days later, on September 11^th, Callofduty4 opened another RfA, saying that with the highly probable traffic increase to happen when the next game in the series comes out in the near future, another administrator would be needed. Bigm opposed, per his reasons on the RfA the week before--Callofduty4 was previously blocked, had a minor case of a personal attack (was quite a while ago, and was nothing to worry about), and that the wiki has enough administrators already. Callofduty4 replied, essentially saying that that was the past, and Bigm should focus on the future. Bigm said that since Callofduty4 did not seem to have learnt his lesson the first time, "another block is warranted and this RFA should be voided".

Callofduty4 was blocked for two weeks. He apologized on his talk page, saying he wasn't trying to cop an attitude, and asked to be unblocked. Callofduty4, feeling that his block was unwaranted, which I completely agree with, started to get annoyed, and said "Why don't you try and imagine how I feel right now". Bigm replied, saying "sorry, I haven't been a 2 year old for 14 years. I forget how it works". Callofduty4 then seemed to have asked Bigm something else on Facebook, which is when Darkman upped the block to being infinite. Bigm remarked "Crybaby meltdown mode begin". Bigm and Darkman continued to harrass/flame Callofduty4, only worsening the situation.

Behind the scenes, Bigm and Darkman carried on a conversation on each others' talk pages.

• Bigm: "No, now he has resorted to messaging me on facebook. I would extend his block but I cba [can't be assed/asked]"
• Darkman: "I'll do it for ya. What do you want, a month; a year?"
• Bigm: "Surprise me =p"
• "20:08, 11 September 2009 Darkman 4 (Talk | contribs | block) changed block settings for Callofduty4 (Talk | contribs) with an expiry time of infinite (account creation disabled) ‎ (Intimidating behaviour/harassment: Got pissy with an admin after his vote to be an admin failed, is a whiny bitch, has contribued nothing of value the past few months, acts like a child, and is overall a pain in the as;need I say more?) (unblock | change block)"
• Darkman: "Done. Do you like my reason? :D"
• Bigm: "Lovely :D"
• Darkman: "I actually ran out of space. I'm letting him edit his user talk page to see the melt down."
• Bigm: "Lol I'm egging him on"

Especially from reading the conversation they had, admitting to fueling the flame just to see what he'd do, I am shocked at what they've done.

What should I do? Should I just ask them what they think they're doing? Should I remove their sysop powers? Or would you step in? I'm not sure they would listen to me, but I'm nearly sure they would listen to a Wikia staff member like you.

It'd probably be better to talk with Wikia Staff after the situation is accessed and talked about thoroughly within the community and a consensus is reached. That would make it a lot easier and would create the best solution for the general community. ~Joey~ ^Talk^ 01:11, September 13, 2009 (UTC)

Yes, Wikia Staff do disapprove of attitudes and actions like this, but in an active community, starting a discussion among users is the first best action. Even if the users don't have the power to de-admin (or take other action) against them, they can demonstrate to Staff what the majority of users feel should be done. (And if the admins in question try to interfere with the discussion, it is more evidence of their abuse of power.) Hello Catherine,

I've posted this message in multiple places today, but I'm just trying to cover all my bases. Would it be alright if I was made the Sysop and Bureaucrat of the Darkest of Days wiki? It's a game I'm becoming quite familiar with, and I would love to start up all the pages, and upload the images, and the whole nine yards, because I think that position would be right in my hands. I'm a notable contributor on the Call of Duty wiki, ask around (and I'm it's current User of the Month), and have made plenty of contributions there, but there's nothing major that needs my attention on it until Modern Warfare 2 comes out, so in my free time I could get the ball rolling on the Darkest of Days wiki. Mrs Munro I have just made a wikia but I would like to promote it some more how do I do that

The best thing to do to attract more visitors to a wiki is to achieve better search engine rankings so that people can find you. More visitors = more editors. The best way to get better rank is to build more pages, and link your pages to each other so there are no orphan pages. Of course if there are forums or other websites devoted to your topic you can participate there and invite people to come help, but they are more likely to help if they see lots of pages being worked on than if they see a mostly empty wiki. These Wikipedia templates rely on a fairly complicated set of code and sub-templates -- you will need to copy all the components from Wikipedia if you want them to work the same way here. Congratulations on your wiki, is the best reference i've found for Mafia Wars. Today episodes 3 and 4 from Moscow were released, and i finished episode 3. The boss loot is an armor: An Ex-KGB bodyguard wih 48 attack and 30 defense. Other excellent loot from chapters are: Armored briefcase 25 attack/36 defense also an armor Shturmovik 45 attack/28 defense also an armor I hope you keep doing such a superb job with this page and wish you the best.

Ok on the Club Penguin Fanon Wiki a user named Explorer 767 unfairly blocked me infinite because he thinks im a evil user named ben. Also on http://unclubpenguin.wikia.com, a user named wompus78 blocked me for infinite for the same reason. wompus also left and mean, upsetting and disturbing comment and picture on my talk page on the UPCP Wiki.

Another user already commented on this in the adoption requests but since you emailed me saying to start forum posts on the topic I've provided links for both wikis

Both are located in the wiki's main forums although they dont get the most activity, so I also posted links to the specific forum topic on the news page and even messaged a few members to voice their opinions. There are a lot of users on the wikis although people come and go in spurts so its tough to get people to respond besides the really active members that almost contribute on a daily/weekly basis. Anyways, there have been no objections so far, and it would be really helpful to have bureaucrat rights on them so I can help setup the community to flow much smoother Grande13 13:06, October 12, 2009 (UTC)

Help Wikia has alot of useful information, to cover alot of subjects about wikia's. Icons, do you mean a favicon or a logo? General image icons, or like the Template:Topright used on some wikis? Infobox help page, also have a read of this and this after you've created it. I was blocked on Zelda Gazette for 999 years because of something that happened on Zeldapedia. I noticed that my talk page on the Stal Wiki had the message "Hey! Just leave wikia alone!" so I contacted the admin who blocked me. I noted how it is NOT permitted to block someone who has done no harm to a wiki because of something that happened on another. She then proceeded to fill my page with these replies: here. She claims that I'm a vandal waiting to happen and that I'm going to hate on the Jews, which is a ridiculous claim. I copied and pasted my userpage from Zelda Wiki, a private wiki site in which leniency about language is given. I happened to have on my page "Neo hates that Jew bastard, Jason." When people whined about it, I removed it to prevent further problems. It wasn't there to invoke anti-semitism. The admin also mentioned your name and said that you would surely global block me because she's allowed tp supersede Wikia's rules since the Zelda wikis are intertwined. And now we're back where we started. They all decided to make up a reason to block me. They called it "Taking material from other wikis." I have stolen NOTHING from another wiki. I used an idea and reworked it greatly, but I didn't steal anything. It's on Zelda Gazette, as before. Okay, now I KNOW I have them. They blocked me on Zelda Gazette for "Stealing material from other wikis." All I did was use an idea I got from another site to put a long link into a conveniently small template. I even asked the admins of the site I got it from. Neo, I looked over your interactions there, and I think if you want to continue editing at Wikia you're going to need to change your tone a lot -- we don't allow the sort of personal attacks I'm seeing, particularly hate speech like the epithets against Jews.

It's true that templates and content from other CC-BY-SA-licensed wikis may be copied and used at Wikia without problem, but the "BY" part of the license indicates that you must provide credit for where you copied it from. I usually provide source information in both the edit summary of the first edit (which creates the new template) and on the new template's talk page.

However, whether the copying is legitimate or not, your behavior has been quite belligerent and confrontational, and I see no reason to override a local community that has decided you are unwelcome. On the one hand, yes, they should be ignoring you unless/until you do something wrong; pre-emptive blocks aren't necessary. However, where communities on different wikis do overlap and have been offended by your behavior, I can't say I blame them for choosing not to have you in their community. I would suggest that perhaps you find or create a different Wikia community about something you like (a band, perhaps, or another hobby?) and work there for a while on improving your track record of behavior with other users before you petition the Zeldapedia or other Zelda communities to return. — Catherine (talk) 20:20, October 29, 2009 (UTC)

He's one of our fantastic entertainment helpers and knows a lot about helping wikis show up well in search engines -- and we definitely want this one to be ranking high before and during the movie's release. Hey Catherine, this is Mattkenn3. You have been communicating with us about the problem between Dinopedia and users of the newly-created Dinos Wiki. Basically, a user from the Dinos Wiki (Liopleurodon 888) vandalized Dinopedia's Main Page. I warned him and messaged an admin at the Dinos Wiki about it, even though the admin asked me not to contact him. I thought that he needed to know. Here is the message that I received afterwards:

I have repeatedly asked you not to contact me, so i will be reporting you to Wikia Staff. I have already reprimanded Liopleurodon, so keep your nose out of my wikis business, as I am very annoyed with him for what he has done. I will be discussing his fate (block or not) with the Founders, so just keep your nose out. Capiche?

I believe that I was being reasonable. The admin feared that I would ask Wikia Staff to "Shut Down" their wiki. I told him that I would not and I told him that he should just talk to the vandal. I agree that it seems like a reasonable reason to contact him, but since you are very aware that he has asked you not to contact him, and that he considers it harassment, it might have been better for you to wait and watch -- you would have learned that he was aware of and dealing with the vandal without needing a warning from you.

He may be oversensitive on this issue, but I feel you have both provoked each other pretty extensively and that you should not be trying to push your luck, no matter how good your intentions. Please do what I have suggested and ignore anything that occurs on the other wiki, do not attempt contact, and focus only on your own project. If other users are causing problems at your wiki, then revert, block, and ignore as you would any vandal, whether they come from Dinos or not, and let T-Rex sort out his own issues. Hi Masterman, it takes time for a wiki to take off. The best way is to keep creating long, interesting pages and make sure they're linked to each other, so that people can find them in search engines. Work on preparing your wiki for a Wikia spotlight. Talk to people at other toys wikis, and the Transformers wiki (but make sure you're being friendly and helping out their wikis too so that you're not "spamming" them about your wiki.)

Sounds like the infobox was copied from a gaming wiki -- you can alter the fields to something more relevant, delete them, or ignore them. Hi Neo, it's possible to change wiki sitenames, but it's not always desirable to change it to something "less generic" because the sitename has a big impact on a site's search engine ranking. Sorry, the only skin you can make default for your wiki is Monaco. You can customize Monobook for your wiki and store it at MediaWiki:Monobook.css but only users who have selected to view Monobook in their preferences will see it. Of course, to keep the main page neat, code wise, you could try recreate the box in a template with the {{{1}}} parameter. For example, create it at Template:MainPageBox, and use {{{MainPageBox|{{AContentPage}}}}... Thanks for responding on dnd.wikia. The issue I'm having right now is one of manpower -- or really, the only person who is actually going to be actively moving articles is, well, myself. We already have a publication framework set up on dungeons.wikia that we use for more common books, and it's a pretty good one -- the issue will be moving the articles over to dungeons.wikia, and inserting them into that framework which is basically just a template that sets all the book information (and after that you can just paste the rest of the page). It's kind of slow going and I'm the only one who seems to want to do it. A quick look at that wiki shows it has an active - if sporadic - user base. Please provide the diffs where they agreed, because the only evidence we have to go off of is their very public Main Page discussion where they last left with no agreement and just concerns. Not to mention that at the beginning of said discussion on their main page you state that the only reason you didn't contribute to their wiki is because you and another user wanted administrative control. If a merger were to go through, the thoughts of dnd.wikia's users should be kept leveled with dungeons.wikia, and dungeons should fold into dnd both because of its better naming for potential surfers and longer established history. And once again, those concerns have already been addressed in that thread (read it please). I do not see why a user with no edits on that wiki aside from edits on the talk of the main page this very night, after posting here, would be raising objections in the final hour outside of reasons of external baggage. And your objections about naming are beyond silly; please do not bring them up if you have no idea of the mechanics involved (which are that both dungeons.wikia and dnd.wikia will point to the same page). Then I bring up new concerns. A user who does this (look at Sep. 19th - then try to find one reason to account for such an action by an admin) should not be an admin on a wiki that is and will be one of wikia's largest wikis. My concerns are both for that wiki's users and because this dungeons wiki has horrendous adminship that has admitted to vandalism and threatened to use pirate software on other wikis. Hello. I was trying to import some templates from Wikipedia into the Atomic Betty Wiki, but they didn't seem to translate too well. It was the About template and those related to it/it uses. A bunch show up as red links on other pages, even though clicking on the red links reveals they are in fact uploaded. Do you know a better way I can get these templates or maybe of another Wikia wiki with their own counterparts of the templates that will handle the interwiki transfer better? --DanMat6288 14:50, November 20, 2009 (UTC)

hey Catherine Munro I have some feedback to!,

- I think the theme editor can bee a lot easier.

 It is far to difficult to edit your theme for noobs who can not write any script.
 The people of wikia should make an engine witch you can make a theme of your own,
 with you can edit things like background by just uploading a background image and a button that says 'set as background'!
 This should also be for color's of all the bolder and fond types, you could get some inspiration by visiting personal spaces
 such as myspace or hyves(dutch) or twitter.

- Make the menu editable for noobs (as easy as what I described above) - Make more (video) tutorials for noobs - Create an option what only the administrator gives the permission to delete things.

Ok, a wiki was started up last summer that was named Darius Wiki. Now I admit I have a wiki also called Darius wiki but please look at the other one. I can't for the life of me understand what darius this wiki is about. It appears to serve no purpose, and the only edit, was the mod on his own talk page saying "think u" which I guess means thank you. Hi, in my computer, all the wikia's sptolights are in spanish, I don't know if you understand me. For example, the spotlights are from .es (es.mortalkombat.wikia.com or es.fringe.wikia.com) How can I change that so that the spotlights will be in english? We are already getting a couple vandals blanking sections and stuff like that, so maybe you could come down and check on the place?
