Wikia - creating communities

This page is an archive. Please do not edit the contents of this page. Direct any additional comments to the current talk page.

The page needs to be in the template namespace for it to be used across wikis. If you put something at Template:User:Jack Phoenix, you will be able to use that by typing {{wikicities:User:Jack Phoenix}} on another Wikia site. However, it's quite a buggy feature, so don't rely on it too much since it could easily break in future. For example, it's meant to be wikia now, but only the old wikicities version works, and sometimes edits you make to the template won't show up for a long time due to a caching problem. A Finnish one was started, but the founder seems to have abandoned it. :( If you do know something, it would be great if you're willing to help revive/adopt it. If not, then that's okay too. Thanks for the help with setting up a featured article. One more quick question if you have the time. I have a page with quite a long list of links. w:c:physics:UVa_Physics_Qualifying_Exam#Statistical_Mechanics I'd like to put this list into two columns. Hi. Thank you so much for your invitation to contribute to the War Wikia again! I stopped posting there because the previous administrator was doing some very strange things - like calling himself the "President" of the Wiki and acting more like a dictator. That, and he almost immediately got into "wars" with other users, putting new articles up for deletion and trying to set up a "supreme court" to arbitrate non-existent controversies. I left after that. I checked in the other day and noticed it looked a lot better, and will be happy to stop by again and see if I can help. Thanks, - Nhprman 03:40, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

I noticed that the upgrade added a new feature, (At least I haven't seen it yet), Special:Giverollback. Yet when I try and give a user rollback rights it says them can't find them. I've tried Adding "User:" infront of their name. Any suggestions? -- Esemono 15:40, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

There are actually two different templates for hello in Gearspedia, Template:Hello and Template:Welcome. Should I modify the second template to discourage new members of Gearspedia to apply for adminship?

Additionaly, why have you deleted the following pages: Special:Undelete/Talk:Peanuts, Special:Undelete/Talk:Miles_Davis, Special:Undelete/Talk:Homestar_Runner_Wooky, Special:Undelete/Talk:Cheat_sheet, Special:Undelete/Talk:Barbatie (which you can't probably understand), Special:Undelete/Talk:Biographies, Special:Undelete/Talk:Bionic, Special:Undelete/Talk:Restaurant, Special:Undelete/Talk:Scotland?

Please know that I will vote strong oppose your request if I could know what will you do after becoming a sysop here. Please consider requesting a removal of your sysops power of Central becouse of that. Szoferka 02:47, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

I was being bold on those deletions, as in my opinion, those pages did not provide much (or any) info at all. For example, Talk:Restaurant contained one unsigned comment that said ""Restaurant" is spelled wrong here...". I aplologise if I have done something wrong. But for the most part, there were lots of orphaned talk pages. I.e someone had accidentally created a page about his/her city on Central, and it got deleted, but the talk page was orphaned.

Being bold on deleting is the lamest explanation I've heard this year. Being bold becouse you've get sysop rights is the second lamest. You've deleted a buch of Central Wikia history without any recognition if it's needed or not. I hope globalsysops will never be created if you going to become one. Have a nice day. I noticed you left a message for Angela about an abandoned wikia. If abandoned Wikia is/are something you are interested in, you might find list.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_Wikias_by_User_Zephyrinus to be of interest. Under the "Work to Do" entry, you will find a list of all the Wikias which I found to be abandoned.

I have since become far, far too busy to maintain this list. Feel free to take it over if you wish. I can be reached on the Genealogy Wikia, or just leave a message here - I'll include your talk page on my watch list.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for the welcome in my talk page. I've actually made a proposal for a new Wikia (about Spelljammer) so followed your link for proposed Wikia's.

To be honest the entire section is a bit confusing. The "Proposed wikis category" says "don't use this category - its out of date" and the "Proposed wikis page" says "use the forums".

I've looked on all of the pages and can't see my own proposal (which I made by using the Start a new Wikia page.

I'm new here, so don't know which of the methods I should be using (or if the form on the "Start a new Wikia" page ate my data). What is the best way for me to do this?

(I think that someone who knows about this should put some text on the other pages that tells people to do things the best way. If forums are best then that should probably go on the "Start a new Wikia" page instead of the form.) David Shepheard 12:19, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Do you remember me from places like Halopedia and House? If not, ohh well. Anyways, i wanted to contact you about giving me admin access to the (en) Half-Life wikia. It's currently dead, 11 articles, no sysops, almost no editors. I saw it today and i would like to fix it up. I'm sure i could get people like RR to help me. I already know how to be an admin, as I'm an admin of the Halo Fanon Wikia. I'm a great member and editor of Halopedia, just ask anyone there, I'm even their Halopedian of the Month. Within two months of my joining of Halopedia, i have almost 3000 edits. I've played the Half-Life games, i know there's a big following for the game, the people just don't know about the Half-Life wikia. So, can you help me out?

He has time to campaign on Halopedia, write a new RP/Story thingy, and play XBL for hours everyday. But he can't take a few minutes to edit the MediaWiki, or even tell me how to. C'mon. He's completely ignoring the Half-Life Wiki. In the past several days he hasn't even gotten 40 edits, he made one change to the sidebar and that's pretty much it. RR is my friend in real life, but i don't think he's even trying with the Half-Life Wiki. He has all this time to talk on the IRCs and write RPs, but can't tell me how to edit MediaWiki.

Could the staff add the Half-Life Wiki to the current list of wikis(in the sci-fi section) on the main page? We could use some new members, and i thought that bring some more people in. Do you think you could do it? I could really use new members there, with the past few days (Apl 11-Apl 13), i've gotten 510+ edits. I've created almost every single page on the Wiki. I really need to get members, and i think this might help.

Here are a few tips for you when interviewing:

• Know the questions you're going to ask beforehand - use your working area to prepare some questions. You can add the answers later.
• Make up some questions - You don't have to always stick to the questions you have planned to ask. If something the interviewee says inspires you to ask a question, feel free to ask it. Even if the question sounds bad, you can always change the question around in the editing process (as long as the answer still matches the question). If you suddenly come up with a question, you can use it.
• Don't make the questions too complicated - interviewees can sometimes get confused by complicated questions. Make them short and simple.

Well, I think you meant your wiki request for a wiki about Entourage. I don't know, it has no comments from other people at all, but it could have some potential. You should try contacting a member of the Community Team, like Sannse, for example and ask from the Com Team members about the status of your request. What's going on with that. It appears to be vandalized, but i don't even have access to edit that. You should check the one on Half-Life wiki, everythings broken, and filled with insults towards staff members. It might be on here too, i haven't checked yet. Just go to toolbox, special pages, user list. Everythings messed up, you seem to have ways to fix these things, so i thought i'd bring it to your attention. Later!

Actually, there are several other issues with MediaWiki stff on Half-Life. Did you guys update the mediaWiki software, because the images aren't working properly, the user list is screwed up horribly, and it's only happening on Half-Life Wiki. Could you please look into this, as my connections are limited.

Well, the userlist is global, so all those account exist on other Wikia wikis (except Uncyclopedia, as that uses a separate database). Some vandals have created these offensive accounts to insult staffers, and there's no simple way to delete accounts on MediaWiki, so Jason just hided them from the userlist. It is a special page - and you really cannot edit special pages directly from MediaWiki, except texts (by altering the messages in MediaWiki:-namespace) but you'd need root access for that, I believe.

Wikia is currently in the progress of being updated to MediaWiki 1.10 and there are some bugs, i.e Makesysop special page is missing. You can report such problems at Forum:1.10a bugs. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 10:39, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jack. Why did you remove the visit button from Kollektivtrafikwikin? The idea is to provide the link in both the language of the wiki and in English. This is done for all description pages for non-English wikis. Most people aren't going to know what "Besök den svenskspråkiga Wikian om kollektivtrafik" means so a translation is necessary. Runewiki on ajautunut ahdinkoon ja löysin jostain linkin community staffin sivuille. Pyysin tietysti heti apua. Olen aktiivisena jäsenenä myös englanninkielisessä Runewikissä ja Kirby wikissä. (Noista voi kai arvata, että olen ala-ikäinen.) Wikejä editoin yleensä noin 2 tuntia per päivä. What is an Oversight, and what do they do? It sounds like a really nefty name, but i'm not really sure what it does. I saw in the userlist that are currently no Oversights, and yeah.

Oversight is a MediaWiki extension that allows users with oversight permission to remove bad edits from edit history completely. For example, if someone posts personal information or email addresses that aren't supposed to be posted, users with access to Oversight can remove them and only developers can restore them if that's needed. There are no users in oversight class, just as there are no users in regexblock or spamregex groups, as those features are staff-only.

As far as i know i've done everything correct with the search logo for the Half-life Wiki, but it still refuses to show up. I uploaded it under the image title that the help section said. Could you look at it, you seem to catch the things that i miss.

I had a look on Half-Life Wikia and I couldn't find any other valid reason than the fact that Half-Life Wikia runs on MediaWiki 1.10alpha which has caused some bugs, like Special:Makesysop not working for those upgraded wikis. As a matter of fact, I couldn't see the picture on the image description page. But you might want to report this at Forum:1.10a bugs anyway. --Jack Phoenix _(Contact) 22:44, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
