[edit] Template documentation does not go well with forumheaders

Copied the templates and forum pages from Starter in the last 24 hours. Planning to do it for other wikis. But we have a problem. See http://fisherymanagement.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Help_test_this%3F and http://fisherymanagement.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Here_at_last.

Forums preload into the edit boxes of new items. I'm sure you remember that, but the consequences may have escaped you until now. Forums therefore copy even a "noinclude" section, such as
<noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude>
. So you get a documentation subpage trying to be created for every forum item.

Is it me or is it you that's done something not right?

Here's the contents of Template:Forumheader/Watercooler as copied from Starter (which hasn't been changed since):

{{Forumheader|Watercooler}}

<!-- Please put your content under this paragraph. Be sure to sign your edits with four tildes ~~~~ --><noinclude>
{{documentation}}</noinclude>

If it's you, maybe I can suggest a solution: the preload doesn't have to pull in a template, does it? So the page it pulls in doesn't need the lovely new standard template documentation. (Sad, but hey that's only two of the dozens of Starter templates!!) Call it Project:Forumheader/Watercooler, maybe, so that nobody can complain that we have templates without proper documentation.

So Forum:Watercooler can have its relevant line simply changed from:

preload=Template:Forumheader/{{PAGENAME}}

to

preload=Project:Forumheader/{{PAGENAME}}

I've probably forgotten something somewhere in there. Oh, yes - Template:Forumheader will have to become Project:Forumheader and therefore need an initial colon and namespace whenever it's called up, which will be mostly in the forumheader subpages such as the above-quoted Template:Forumheader/Watercooler, which will be renamed Project:Forumheader/Watercooler and will have first line with the extra stuff but no "noinclude" and therefore look like this:

{{:Project:Forumheader|Watercooler}}

<!-- Please put your content under this paragraph. Be sure to sign your edits with four tildes ~~~~ -->

And help desk correspondingly.

Now I'm surer that I've missed something. Must be lunch-time. I expect you can find a flaw at a glance if there is one.

Cordially

Robin Patterson (Talk) 01:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Hey, sorry I missed this - I've removed the lines from [1] and [2] for now. I don't think they absolutely require the explanation, but I'll try and check out your solution when I get a bit of extra time :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  12:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Good man! Maybe the documentation can be added to http://starter.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Forumheader/doc. Many templates on Wikipedia (as I expect you know) share documentation if they are as intimately related as those are. That would be cleaner than changing "Forum:" to "Project:" on three or six pages. Maybe I can do it; some of my work on Starter has survived expert attention. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 21:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the edit, looks fair. :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  21:09, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for correcting the redirect. It seems to have been corrected but there are usernames on that pages and one of them had to edit from an IP adress because of an interwiki redirect. [edit] Pikcanon-NOT needs a Bureaucrat

Hello Kirkburn! My Wiki, http://pikminfanon.wikia.com/wiki/Pikcanon-NOT, has a bit of a problem. The Wiki's creator, Rocky0718,is the only Bureaucrat there and he/she has left the wiki. He/She is the only registered Bureaucrat there and unless you can talk to him/her on another of his/her userpages somewhere on Wikia, you can never become a sysop/bureaucrat. The only way this can be solve is to make any of the Users there a Bureaucrat. Please make me a bureaucrat so we can fix this problem. I think you should make me the Bureaucrat because for the past few days I was the only one who did anything there. Also I am always on that Wiki and I am known to help people in real life. Maybe that experiance will help me decide who deserves to become a Bureaucrat/Sysop. My Userpage there is here.

Thanks and sorry if my request was an incovieneance.

[edit] Protection templates for starter.wikia?

Those of us who copy templates from Wikipedia when there is no Wikia equivalent often copy pages that are protected or semi-protected. It would be good to have Wikia versions of the relevant templates, with "/doc" pages in our nice new standard style. I've just searched Starter and not found any. Any plans to add them?

It would be good to use exactly the same names so that we don't have to change anything to use them on imported pages.

Robin Patterson (Talk) 09:19, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Good idea! I'll see what I can do - shall probably do it on templates.wikia first though :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  16:00, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, pal. Er - templates.wikia?? Another treasure for me to discover, no doubt! — Robin Patterson (Talk) 23:18, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Templates is a separate wiki intended to collate useful templates from across Wikia - atm mainly the starter kit templates, plus a few more. This also means they can be developed without worrying about affecting the starter kit or other wikis unnecessarily. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  16:42, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Video Embed Tool

Hey, it's Creepydude from the Call of Duty Wiki. I am posting in response to your message on my talk page about the new video embed tool. First of all, the new tool is awesome, and it'll work wonders with all the gameplay videos we have in the wiki. I'll start putting the new format over the old <youtube></youtube> links right away.

I have a couple questions. I am curious, since only some wikis have gotten this announcement, which ones have? Just the big-ish wikis? Or just the big-ish gaming wikis?

Another question is, I'm wondering why you decided to contact me personally. I was quite suprised when I found that I was the only user on the wiki to recieve this message. Either way, thanks a lot, and I added an announcement. Keep up the great work; I am very happy with this feature! Respond on whatever wiki you wish. Creepydude Editz Say Some'at Here! 22:33, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Right on; thanks! I only have one comment/criticism to make. If you try to put a hyperlink inside the thumb comment, it acts really funny. For instance if I did [[Video:Example|thumb|This is an [[example]] video]] then the hyperlink inside it would mess up the video. I am not sure if this can be fixed or not since the hyperlinks worked for images.
I feel special now that Call of Duty Wiki is one of the first wikis to get this feature. ;) Creepydude Editz Say Some'at Here! 23:30, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Ah yes, this is an known issue atm, I think. Thanks for reminding me! Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  23:31, 28 January 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I want to pester you one more time with a tiny glitch in the new video upload thing. If you go to Special:ImageList, uploaded videos appear in there and if you click on one, it puts an Image: in front of it, making it Image:Video:Example or whatever. Do you have plans to create a special video upload log and full support for the feature, or do you plan on keeping it small? Anyway, thanks a lot. Bolded so the text is a little easier to pick out. Creepydude Editz Say Some'at Here! 07:48, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the report, I'll pass it on. Yep, we plan to duplicate as much of the Image-related special pages as possible, so as to make maintenance simple. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  15:32, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Help?

As it seems Sannse is not available today, I was wondering if you may assist us at the RuneScape Wiki. I left a message here on Sannse's talk page about a vandal who is evading blocks by making new vandal accounts. [edit] Video Gallery?

Hiya Kirkburn, already asked this on The Vault forum, but figured I might get a quicker response going directly to you. Is there code for a video gallery, along the lines of the image gallery? We're running into a problem with too many videos on one page, some of our editors are demanding removal, others are screaming that they'll stop contributing videos if we don't display them - and I'm stuck in the middle trying to satisfy everyone. If the function doesn't already exist, it sure would be nice ;) File:Ash Nuke.jpg AshRandom (Talk) 20:28, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Hidden 'by default'?

I sometimes use IPA symbols in text, but I have to copy-paste them because ,although being in w:c:conmyth:MediaWiki:Edittools, they are hidden by default and editing this page does not solve it (I might be editing it wrong, but I cannot see what is intended to be done to show them). Do you know how to correct it or who can correct it? Lars (Poet) (speak page) 21:30, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

The more advanced symbols are hidden by the "<! --" and "-- >" (without the spaces) comment markers. Remove those from your w:c:conmyth:MediaWiki:Edittools, and they should show up. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  22:12, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, I just thought that it had to do with the CSS settings, as it is such a visible change, I will ask other administrators what they think about making it visible, but I think that they will find it OK to change it, users would still be able to made their CSS settings to hide it. I have even seen a user CSS subpage for User:217.77.165.53 on wikia help, so IPs are also able to enable or disable that (I will enable it by default, as I have no idea how javascript controls what to show and what to hide on wikipedia). [edit] What links to a page from w:c:conmyth:Monaco-sidebar

Hello again, Kirkburn. Is there somehow we can see links from pages like mediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar from Special:WhatLinksHere? On w:c:conmyth I had to remove a huge amount of references from w:c:conmyth:MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar after another administrator had deleted the pages. I know that they are references rather than links, but they are transformed into links when using it. Lars (Poet) (speak page) 20:12, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Tekken Wiki tables and templates

Hey, I'm over from the Tekken Wiki. [edit] CreatePage

Hi Kirkburn, I see these a 'hidden function' to generate new pages to a pre determined template, for consistency. I was looking at the Marvel Database Wiki which as a similar idea as im after trying to standardise the outline pages for articles at Tractor Wiki. My general layout follows the WP page layout as early pages were from WP as a starting point. But had a problem with WP infoboxes not working (get loads of HTMl code showing so ditched them from some pages at first). I then imported a load of WP templates but suffer some incompatibility with hem but getting sorted (I think)). (didnt know wikia has some available). - Wikipedias navbox suite being a problem on import. (the nested nature of the doc and interconedted examples causing red template links).

Have now come to the conclusion standardizing the basic pages has several advantages;

  • consistency, as i end up with slightly different headings / content on different sessions, etc.
  • reduce finger wear (RSI)
  • Get more pages created
  • Make it easier for beginners (possibly to start pages)

So is it easy to enable this Function, could not really see it at the example wiki given (found the CreateTemplates pages) but didn't see the interface mentioned on the front page ?

Dont want to create empty stubs en mass as such, just /sub pages for the red links were i have a bit of Content/ or an image (as some high level pages getting too full of images). Also need to Add back info boxes to early pages. All the company pages need one (about 250 +).

I started trying to adapt the Documentation page to generate a Preload blank gallery page but found that the sub pages are only allowed in some Name spaces & not the main !! And Template:Documentation is really a Page in a page in another page (the template being documented). So unraveling the codes not working, as getting the {{{PAGENAME}}} bits right and If statements confused me.

So any suggestions ?

Also The Marvel Datebase has a neat category hierarchy function at the bottom I.e Marvel Datebase - Administration - Tools - Templates. (PeterParker doesent know how that works, I asked) Thats how I found this create page looking at a Media wiki extensions list. Do you know how that Category horizontal list is implemented, is it part of the interface  ? - BulldozerD11 17:29, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi Kirburn would be great full if you can help sort out this creating new pages useing templates. From a query on the forum I found this page Help:CreatePage#Createplate_list and have tried it on Tractor Wiki but it does not appear to work (Special:CreatePage) gives a blank new style page edit box but no list of pages. Re reading the help page appears to say its only works on newer wikis ? Does it need enabling on my wiki ?
I've had also tried to implement the create a new page function from Marvel database, which is under development here and add a button to access it through the Createbar. But canot get the Button to load the menu page. (the underlying templates complexity with if tests etc was confusing me but the basic working behind it I've now worked out and a couple of the options work.) I need to make it accessible by placing a button on pages, which the create bar appeared to do. (the other buttons work but the link to this does not ! ) ? Can you please assist - BulldozerD11 22:23, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Bully Wikia and copyright problems

Hey Kirkburn. I'm McJeff, one of two bureaucrats from Bully Wiki, and I'm concerned that the wikia is pushing the limits of the fair use policy on text.

The issue is that Bully has many characters, and each character has its own article, and each article has a list of quotes from each character. In most cases the quotes are limited to 20. Now I think this is already stretching fair use policy on text to the breaking point, but my co-bureaucrat wants to extend the limit to 30.

I'm very uneasy about that since again I think it's a Fair Use violation, but I've been told in varying ways by the other users there that they "don't like" the Fair Use policy and don't care to obey it. So, I have to ask here. I don't know if you're the person who deals with copyright issues - I have trouble finding my way around Wikia central. So if you can't help yourself, I was hoping you could at least direct me to someone/something that could.

I've been referring to Wikipedia's fair use policy on text for this. McJeff 18:39, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Yours, Love is Noise Love is PainLove is these blues 20:12, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Who? Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  18:07, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
This is hardly relavent. Seeing as I didn't have get the wiki going,I asked and Begged Jaws for her to get help. When she didn't Or the when the other 'Crat didn't help I stepped up to the plate and asked for help. So if anything, I'm more deserving of my power. She also has been abusing her powers; for example she banned me after helping a user. And I created the IRC Channel and she also abused her power. And finally, how does skype pertain to the Wiki? SPARTAN-G024 20:40, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to vouch for Josh here. He's done nearly all the work getting the wiki off the ground, and he was the one who contacted people when he hit a snag. Jaws has done almost nothing to improve the wiki despite being a 'crat. Also, 'Verbally assaulting' is a loaded phrase, at worst he's been teasing people a little too harshly and all that's deserved is an apology.

I'm honestly disappointed that you seem to be de-admining him without actually seeing both sides of the argument. What happened to good faith? Screennameless - "Goodnight, everybody!" 20:45, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I just asked "who?" :P I didn't mean to appear like I was going to do something without finding out more. At any rate, it sounds like something far too controversial for me to take any action - I can offer advice, of course, but for that I'd suggesting pointing me to somewhere on the wiki. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  21:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
(shakes head) Sorry about that. It just seemed to me like you were going, "Okay, who am I de-admining?" Which, I see now, was stupid on my part. Again, sorry. (laughs) If you want a quick summary, they're mad at each other because Josh feels like the other bureaucrats aren't pulling their weight and because Jaws feels that Josh is abusing his bureaucrat powers. Both arguments have merit.
Josh was especially frustrated that Jaws hadn't done much on the wiki and neither had the other bureaucrat, Zen. Basically, Josh felt like he was doing everything, which isn't that far off. So whenever they tried to assert authority over him as founders of the wiki, he'd get annoyed and lash out at them in what he viewed as just retaliation. Meanwhile, Jaws felt like he was attacking other people unjustly. So she would fight back in what she viewed as just retaliation. Cue vicious circle.
I, among other people, can vouch for Josh about having done most of the wiki's construction on his own. And what he couldn't do, other people did at his request and coordination (most of these have been archived now, as on User:EightyOne's talk page on Gearspedia). And I know I'd be frustrated if I spent basically two weeks trying to create a wiki without the help of the other bureaucrats. But I do agree that he can get pretty nasty to Jaws and Zen, most of the evidence of this occurring in IRC, which I have no records of. I also know that his idea of joking around (ex. kicking someone out of IRC for a silly reason) could be misinterpreted. For instance, in the block log you may notice I was once banned for two minutes for "slapping (Josh) on Skype". I found this hilarious. Other people probably think this is admin abuse.
Jaws has also now told us that she had real life issues that pulled her away from the wiki, which I believe completely. However, I had no knowledge of this until literally yesterday, and from what I've been told by both parties, Josh had only cursory knowledge of it after the wiki was already created.
The truth is, I'm very frustrated because Josh is my friend and I don't want to seem like I'm just taking his side. I really like Gears Fanon and I hope to see it grow into a real community. I'm just completely lost on what to do. But I definitely don't think removing Josh's admin privileges is fair to him considering the effort and time he's put in there.
Again, I'm sorry I jumped to conclusions... and I'm sorry that became really long. I don't know how that happened. Trying to be thorough, I guess. :P Screennameless - "Goodnight, everybody!" 00:39, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Love the expansion of the video embed.

Lingering question: What about an embed of the videos from Blip.TV? [5]

And a new question: What about the embed of videos from Viddler.com? [6]

Blip.tv is still on our list to be added, and I've added Viddler. Unfortunately, I don't have an ETA, but keep your fingers crossed :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  23:22, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Adoption question

Hey Kirkburn, when a wiki can be considerate for adoption i have seen a couple of wikis quite dead, but dont know if there is a establish time frame of inactivity where the wiki can them be considerate a candidate for adoption, and then do i have to add it to an adoption list or with just marking it at the page here at central? --Cizagna (Talk) Dofus » 14:47, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

From Wikia:Adoption requests, it appears to be about two months. I suggest using that page for any requests, or Special:Contact. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  11:32, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Need a guru

Hiya Kirkburn, are you a HTML/CSS guru or familiar with browser quirks (especially Internet Explorer)? (or maybe you can direct me to someone?) I recently updated the homepage of our wiki and been de-bugging for hours for darn IE7 and IE6 browsers (why can't they behave?). Anyway I was wondering if it's my code or maybe certain ads that cause this: screenshot link? Can you replicate that on your end? Here is the current version. The prior version of the page was fine for the Internet Explorer browsers, but with my move of the todo box, I think the page doesn't render for IE correctly (other browsers are fine). :( — JeiaraTalk 07:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Was Wondering if you would help set up a Template theme for the Moonglade RP Wiki? Its Horribly under-used. but if it had a nice face to it and was easy to use, theres no reason it cant get Epic. --Kingstoph 09:39, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki:EditingTips

In my own wiki, Adventure Quest Worlds Wiki, the editing tips box is too small, I've had to remove a lot of information from there, is there anyway of extending it, or even adding subheadings to the headings already there? GreennaveTalk 06:24, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Not as far as I know, unfortunately. It was designed to quite simple, so unfortunately doesn't have support for longer length or special headings. Are you able to make the text smaller perhaps? Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  07:41, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] A little suggestion for the WoW wiki

Regarding the "Quests at *insert level here*" pages:

These would be infinitely more useful if each quest was "icon'd" with either Alliance, Horde, or both. This would immediately assist people with finding relevant level quests which are in their faction.

You mean articles like http://www.wowwiki.com/Category:Quests_at_57 ? Unfortunately, it's a restriction of the software that prevents us from being able to put icon labels on those :( Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  12:56, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Custom Monaco theme not working

In the Pokemon Crater Wiki I copied the example monaco theme given on this page in section 'Customize the Colors'- Custom color customization on w:c:help:Help:Customizing_Monaco, and went to admin options in my preferences to select custom. It worked. Then I changed the colours as you can see on this page- MediaWiki:Monaco.css. The theme didnt change automatically so I went back to admin options selected Sapphire, saved it and then again selected Custom and saved it. but the new colours I specified in the Monaco.css page still do not show. Insteed, the old example theme from the section on the Help:Customizing_Monaco I mentioned erlier appears. Why is this happening and how can I correct it? I have now kept the theme as Brick theme as ot matches to the colour scheme needed for the wiki but its not close enough. I had put this message on the Help:Customizing_Monaco's Talk page but no one responded so I thoungt of asking a staff. Can you help me?--Deshkap 2006 16:44, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Need to revoke sysop status

Hi, this is Spike's Girl from the ThatGuyWithTheGlasses wiki. Recently, it has come to the attention of myself and my staff that one of our newest admins has lied to us about his age. We've been in contact with this person through Skype, and recently discovered that, while he initially had sworn to us that he was 18, he is actually only 8 years old. While we haven't had any abuse problems with him, no one on staff is comfortable with having someone so young having such an important status.

If you could remove his Sysop status, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. --Spike's Girl (TGWTG wiki)

[edit] Fallout wiki IRC channel

Hey, i was wondering what was happening with the fallout wiki's IRC channel. It was on, then disapeared. I signed in to my account on Wikia, and returned to the Fallout wiki's main page (which is where the IRC link is) and it wasn't there. Can someone please tell me what is going on? Thanks.

I'm sorry, I don't know - I don't have any connection to it. Ausir on the fallout wiki is more likely to know. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  10:54, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ListUsers

Hello Kirkburn. As you can see on Image:ListNoUsers.png or on w:c:dragonrp:Special:ListUsers, something is wrong on that specialpage, there are at least a bot (a staff member whomade cleanup of hundreds of identical pages, so there is also at least one staff member to be listed on the page), a sysop, a bureaucrat and a user there. The problem also affect another wiki with 4 sysops and I do not understand how it cannot affect this one. What is wrong? Lars (Poet) (speak) 17:49, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, this just came up internally - we'll look into it. It's rather odd that it affects specific wikis, though. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  18:26, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Suppress Redirect

I am an administrator on several wikis and I would like to know how to use suppressredirect when moving pages to prevent a redirect from being created. Do you know how to do this? Thanks. GT5162 (talk) 16:04, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately I do not know - I suggest trying Special:Contact. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  16:27, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. GT5162 (talk) 16:47, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Sorry I know this is an old question, but I've just figured out the answer. If you are a sysop, when you move a page you get a tickbox with the option to "Leave a redirect behind" - unticking this suppresses a redirect. If you are not a sysop, you don't get that option, and the redirect is always created (to avoid pages going missing). Gboyers talk 13:27, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Spam filter Problem

It seems that there are problems of spam filter in EVCHK. Now we cannot edit any pages, even sysop could not.

It just shows that "The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a blacklisted external site. "

--疾風綾希 12:37, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Check c:evchk:MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist or c:evchk:MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. Perhaps it will help you figure out why you're getting this problem. It looks like your whitelist might need a few entries (maybe evchk.wikia.com?) that are missing. Also use c:evchk:Special:Contact to report your problem. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3:35 PM PST 30 Apr 2009

Where exactly do you mean? Which wiki, and on the sidebar, main page elsewhere? Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  14:04, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Here, and yeah, in the sidebar. - Goketsuji Fan 08:02, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
If you check http://powerinstinct.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Monaco-sidebar you'll see it's automatically generated from the "top users". As the list is automatically generated, you can't edit it directly - however, you could just edit the sidebar with different links and more names. You can read more about the sidebar on Help:Sidebar. Hope that helps! Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  13:31, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

The email link on my user page is to built-in MediaWiki functionality - I won't be removing it, as I am a Wikia Staff member. You are free to remove my user page from your wiki if you so wish. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  12:26, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
This user says that you must be 8 years or older to create an account on her "Rules of Wikia". When Uberfuzzy changed it to 13, she changed it back and protected the page. Please can you have a look. (From this user's behaviour, I doubt that she is over 13). GT5162 (talk) 15:05, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Switched back to 13, with a link to http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Wikia:Terms_of_use#Membership - thanks. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  15:14, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
I have to agree with GT5162, I doubt she herself is 13, and I don't know why she even has a wikia with only 8 pages about some anime. And she appears to be the only editor, and running a communist environment, no offence to her.
 λ
T 15:15, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Also, she created the user pages of "HeroLimeLiam", "CoolGuyAnthon" and "CuteBoyTom", whose usernames aren't even registered. It is extremely unlikely that a 13-year old would bring imaginary friends onto Wikia so I'm not sure whether this user should be allowed to edit here. GT5162 (talk) 15:33, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] WoWWiki redirects

I just noticed Forum:Changes to the Create Wiki process, so I was wondering if you could put a dump of all the known *.wikia.com redirects to WoWWiki.com somewhere on WoWWiki (maybe at c:wow:WoWWiki:Wikia subdomain redirects), in case people might have ideas for subdomains we should try to capture before the new Wikia creation thing gets too out of hand. I suspect we won't need to suggest many new ones as many I tested were already redirecting. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3:04 PM PST 6 May 2009

Hi Bionicleboy! Are you using <badge user="Bionicleboy3000 " wikia="insertwikihere.wikia.com" /> ? It should work using that syntax, using the correct url of your wiki. --CharitwoTalk 21:42, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
I tried that, and I got the one from the wiki I have instead of the wiki I was trying to get it from. I used that syntax on my wiki, the Shadow Spy Net, with the badge supposed to be from Sonic News Network, but I got my Shadow Spy Net badge instead! [edit] Poetry Wikia Question

Hello, my name is Kyle Hardin (Specter), and I am an administrator on Poetry Wikia. I was wondering if you could answer a quick question.

Is there a way to alter the code of a create-article-box so that any page created with it will automatically include itself in a specified category? Let's say I have a createbox that is only meant to be used to create new articles about poetry. I would like all new poems to automatically be placed in the "Catalog" category, for easy searching. Can I set up the createbox so that all articles created with it include the [[Category:Catalog]] tag?

[edit] Bot flag

Hi, I have a bot account (User:SUL Bot), which runs pywikipediabot software, that can be used for fixing double redirects from page moves. User:Charibot used to do this, but Charitwo hasn't run the bot recently and all of the double redirects on this wiki have had to be fixed manually. I have tested the bot on admintools.wikia.com, where it has a bot flag (For an example of how the bot works, please see [9]), and I was wondering if it would be possible to give it a bot flag on Central Wikia? Thanks. SUL 21:01, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

I am not strongly involved with user rights on Central Wikia, so I suggest asking Sannse instead. :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  16:00, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
I saw that you gave a bot flag to Charibot on Central Wikia, and the tasks that User:SUL Bot performs are very similar to User:Charibot because they both run the same scripts. I have noticed that Sannse hasn't edited for a few days. Is there anyone else that I can ask? Thanks. SUL 16:38, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi SUL, Charibot is still good for this task. :) Thanks for worrying bout him, I'll remind him to send a card! --CharitwoTalk 16:42, 8 June 2009 (UTC)
Sannse is certainly around, regardless of her edits - I suggest her as she's much more familiar with how Central Wikia administration works than myself. It's nothing against your bot, but the case for Charitwo was just because I know him quite well from around Wikia (and he's used his bot on wikis which I am strongly familiar with). [edit] Microsoft + Windows Wikias

Hey George. Micropedia (windows.wikia.com), the Microsoft Wiki (microsoft.wikia.com) and the Windows 7 Wiki (windows7.wikia.com)seem to be serving the same purpose here. To avoid duplicating efforts, could and should these be combined? Two of those appear to be pretty much dormant, and the third is currently small and quiet, so now might be a good time to do that. Also I work with an ex-Microsoft employee on an old dormant external wiki with the same content (mswiki.com), so perhaps that could be integrated too? This is a very useful subject area, so it would be nice to kick-start the collaboration on this. Let me know what you think - Gboyers talk 21:58, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

Sounds like it could be possible - however, I recommend asking about this via Special:Contact. If the other wikis are pretty much dead, and don't have active admins, I think it should be feasible. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  14:57, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

I've spoken to the relevant people (founder & active admins), and they are in support of this. How should we proceed? Gboyers talk 20:12, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] "personal" Wikis?

Hello Kirkburn

I quick question - Can I request a new wiki for a personal writing project, or is that not within the scope of the sort of wikis you provide? Thanks in advance :) Zeraktalk 18:10, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

No, those usually won't be granted, unless it's something along the lines of The Tiny Guide to Wikis and Wikipedia, which is a how-to guide where anyone can contribute. --Gp75motorsports REV LIMITER GT-PT/GT-EN/CSW 11:07, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

A range of them has been vandalizing GT-EN. I want to blacklist them to avoid more vandalism. --Gp75motorsports REV LIMITER GT-PT/GT-EN/CSW 19:20, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
None of the IPs in Recent Changes are in the same range, so there would be no reason to do that. SUL 20:43, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

But when one pops up, I can blacklist them. Is there a page for it? --Gp75motorsports REV LIMITER GT-PT/GT-EN/CSW 10:47, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

No, I don't think it's available. I believe only staff can block a range of IPs. --MyBrute Resource Center@Ronga 17:41, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
It is possible for any administrator to block a range of IPs; however, rangeblocks can affect many users and should be avoided when possible. See [10] for an example of a rangeblock. SUL 17:09, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

By the way visual editors can do much more than just a newbie editor. Advanced users can benefit from it too. Table is a god example. It's easier to type information on a particular cell in a visual editor than when you are in source mode. It's difficult to locate to that particular cell in a quick way in source mode. Even if you are familiar with wikitable, the visual editor makes your job easier. If you want to delete a column or change the formatting of a column or row, visual editor does it much faster than doing it yourself via source mode. They are some reasons why visual editors don't need to limit themselves to newbies only.

I don't turn off the visual editor when I'm blogging. The blogging editor allows me to quickly insert some codes, which I would spend more time otherwise if I type myself. I don't need to toggle just to type some codes which are not available on the toolbar. The interface is still nicer to work with because the effect will be rendered immediately. --MyBrute Resource Center@Ronga 17:41, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Thanks very much, both for the bug reports and the general feedback :) Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  13:07, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Declarin War

Hi I am new at playing Galactic Civ 2 Dread Lords ... and I am trying to find out about how to declare war if you could please send me a hint I would gladly Appreciate it Tonyknight 23:50, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I do not know - I have yet to play that game! Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  13:21, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Catselect- again

You are aware of the issue with a newline prior to the noinclude block that the new editor introduces to protect category declarations at the end of the article (aka Categoryselect). Is this a nofix? If so, how about a workaround feature such as hinting categoryselect that it is ok to omit the newline?[11].

I have no idea how the arcanery of wikia bugzilla process works, or I would do it myself. Thanks. -~ Phlox 18:20, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Disregard inquiry. But for your info- if someone else asks about this, tell them to stick the category declaration(s) in a template so the new editor won't muck with them. This workaround may be suitable in many cases. It was in familypedia's case. -~ Phlox 22:23, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Default interface language and bug

Well, whlie EVCHK updates to MediaWiki 1.14, there are a few problems.

The "language" of links had been changed to simplified Chinese, such as changing Special:Preferences to Special:参数设置. Even changed Language setting in my preferences, the "language" still stucks on S.Chinese. How to change it back to English, for easy input in pages?

EVCHK is just a traditional Chinese site introducing web culture of Hong Kong. Also, there is no any plan to make it inherently multilingual. But, it is too diffical to force the default interface language for all users or made interfaces synchronization with zh- perfix languages. Are there any ways for that?

Bug:The links of Unused categories and Unused templates are both directed to Unused templates Special pages on EVCHK. Please fix that.

Have you tried Special:Contact? As for the bug you mention, they both appear to the right places here. Kirkburn  talk  contr  @Wikia  16:04, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New editor- load times high for templates with large numbers of parameters

Genealogy has very fine grained information that we are using semantic forms to encode. For example, a contributor could specify the month and day of the departure date of a migration of an individual, including geographic coordinates, notes, sources, people associated with the relocation etc.

Problem- for its form capability, the new WYSIWYG editor appears to scan templates to identify parameters to offer to the user for editing. Our pages typically use templates that can have many hundreds of unique parameters. This is a simpler article that uses templates that have maybe 80 or so unique parameters. After pressing "edit", it requires 15-20 seconds for this article to be loaded into the new editor. Other articles using new generation templates with more comprehensive lists predictably take much longer. This article requires 30 to 45 seconds to load into the new editor. The ironic thing is that the effort is totally wasted because we advise our users to employ semantic forms rather than the new editor's forms because our forms have data entry controls, support for specific data types like dates, are more compact/ logically layed out/ quicker to edit with hideable sections etc.

Question/feature request: Is there some sort of magic word to abort this time consuming operation? If not, how long do you estimate before there would be some sort of fix/ workaround for this issue? For example, I am wondering if the editor recognized a magic word in the templates so that it would halt its scan for parameters. This will address the severe performance issue, but any other remedy would be welcome (even a site wide abort of template scanning). Until then, we have a blocking issue with the new editor, and we really really need the new editor because we expect that many of our prospective contributors will be those uncomfortable with wikitext.

I realize I don't make simple requests and thank you in advance for your assistance.

BTW- The workaround I described about newlines being introduced prior to noincludes protecting category declarations works just fine for our wikia. I have an awb bot run converted the several thousand pages affected, so nothing needs to be done on our account.
