[edit] Image License Tag help
I've uploaded a bunch of images on my wiki (lorea.wikia.com) but I don't know which tag to put on them. They are all constructed from screenshots in the game, but they also have been significantly edited by myself (such as cleaning up bloodstains and piecing together different sections to create maps). I wasn't sure if I should use the "I took this picture myself" since 1) It's not a photo and 2) they used screenshots, which probably have their own licensing agreements and all. I might have used the screenshot tag that's used on Wikipedia, but it's not an option on my wiki and I don't know how to import it. Please assist! Mathwhiz90601 01:39, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hullo! You probably only need a copyright notice for the game developers. The screenshot template from Wikipedia is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Non-free_game_screenshot - you could probably just copy and tweak it. It certainly doesn't need to be quite as complex as the Wikipedia version. Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] Editing Main Page Sections
Is there a way to edit the individual sections of the main page without having to edit the whole page and scroll down and finding the sections ?
I have removed the NOEDITSECTION with this comment
<!-- __NOEDITSECTION__ -->
It makes the "Edit" button appear on the right but when you click Edit you get "There is no Section #" where # = 1 thru however many sections you have using the {{HeadingB}} and/or {{HeadingA}} templates.
( Morph on http://Ikariam.com | Contribs | Talk ) -- 20:27, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Not really, as the headings are on a different page to the main page. If you moved the header code from the templates to the main page it could help - but it's generally safer to edit the whole page at once, so you can check nothing breaks. Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] Zone of the enders wiki
First off: I'ver noticed in the past that Wki's have had been...lacking in areas...like for example the Soul cailbur wiki (and before that there were some missing in the Matrix one that I added that were helpful) was lacking at first and I helped get alot of stuff up on it. Second...the Gundam wiki.. helped alot there as well...well now I find an area that needs help more than I can give....or at least more than I alone can give..and this wiki is so lacking that it saddens me...I'm refering to the Zone of the Enders wiki. I've tried adding some articles myself..but I've realised that its so lacking its beyond me alone helping..so I have a request...would you be willing to help (or have somone who can help) expand the Zone of the enders wiki? [edit] I request assistance
Kirkburn, I recently asked Angela from Wiki Central to find out what had happened to my userpage on Halopedia. Even though she recontacted me, asking if the userpage was restored, she also had instructed me to contact you in the event my userpage was not restored. So, here we are, and I still do not have my userpage. If you can do anything, I would greatly appreciate it. Please Note: I have already contacted the admins of Halopedia of this matter, and one attempted to restore it. However, when he did, the page (and all its tabs at the top) refused to show up. [edit] Mainpage on AoCWiki
Hey,
I don't have much to do with the main page as there's an ad inside the content I don't really visit it at all anymore, so there's not much I can do about it unless Wikia decides to go sane again, or at least sane enough to stop screwing it's editors. Cheers, Zido [Talk] [Contribs] 12:39, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Animal Crossing City Main Page
Hello, Kirkburn!
I'm one of the admins at the Animal Crossing Wikia. I remember a while ago (February) you offered to help work on the main page. Neither Aeryka nor myself are very good with main page design, so I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. Are there set standards I should follow, help pages, etc. that you know of? I'm pretty sure that with a guide I could figure things out. Thanks much! Stumpers 18:57, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Kirkbot, and attracting contributors
The Kirkbot isn't causing any problems.
I was reading http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Attracting_Contributors#Attracting_Contributors (actually, a while back, when it was on another wiki). I'm not blessed with social skills, so I don't really know how to promote. Do you have any pointers? Kimera 757 (talk) 01:55, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, talking to Blizz would be one - I am supposed to be in contact with the StarCraft rep, but I don't think I've had anything. I'll chase up on that. Apart from that, getting the knowledge out to fansites helps. I'll take a look into it tomorrow, see what we have set up, and who we know. Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] Guildopedia Skin Change
You said on the Guildopedia discussion page that the wiki was going to have to be updated to a new skin. Why is this? Has it been tested with the current layout to make sure that it's easily browsable? The current skin on the Dofus wikia has its pluses and minuses, but the two wikis aren't interchangeable, nor should they use the same skin.--Travern 12:31, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi Kirkburn, thanks for the help switching over to the Monaco theme on the SinsOfASolarEmpire wikia. [edit] Re: About nested td tags
I talked to you about 10 days ago about an html td tag problem I had. I brought it to Meta developer metawikipedia:User:Brion VIBBER. Here is the discussion we had:
| Hey, I seeked you out because you seem reliable. I've seen you around at wikipedia. I'm wikipedia:User:Happypal.
Anyways, I hope you have the answer to this. I'm trying to write a pretty complicated template, which creates a table, where each line is a sub-template. The sub-template is composed of td taged tadda. (like so:wikipedia:User:Happypal/td_tag_problem). Here, it works fine. However, over on the wikia website I am working on, it doesn't: (w:c:Supcom:User:Happypal/td_tag_problem). Html is activated on the wikia page (if I create a full table, with the table and tr tags, it works well), but if the td s are not nested, then they are processed as text, keeping me from transcluding them into the mother template.
I can wait till the end of your break ;) thnx, -- happypal (en.wikipedia/supcom.wikia)
|
This is pretty much what you had told me, that the mediawiki software wasn't up to date. Do you know if it is okay to ask to update the supcom wiki, or should I just wait for a wikia-wide update? I'm asking you because you are the person I've had the most contact with, but if you think someone else might be better suited, please redirect me :)

[edit] Supcom wiki main page
I did some modifications. could you look at them?
I'm just wondering if it is possible to edit the column-left and column-right tags, so I don't have to put a table inside the entire column... But I haven't found where the tag is defined.
Also, when the window is a bit small, the columns overlap a bit. Do you think you would know how to fix it?
Sorry for the double post, but it's for different things. happypal (Talk)Admin@SupCom.wikia.com 16:55, 19 August 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. You can't really edit the tags - I can only really point to w:c:help:Help:Main page column tags for information on what you can do.
- As for the overlap, it's due to the images being side-by-side. Unfortunately there isn't a simple fix for this, other than reducing the size of the images. Kirkburn talk contr

Could you please help. Also my wiki (Burnout Paraidse Wiki) wants its name changing to burnopedia (officially) but to the burnout wiki on the URL. Could you please sort this otu for me as i've already tried but wikia gaming and central have failed to fix it. Thanks for you time, {{SUBST:User:The parkster/signature code}} 12:28, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
- WW:SIG on WoWWiki may be able to help you. At a glance though, you may not have "Raw signature" ticked? For the wiki name - you want the name of the site as "Burnopedia", but the address to be the same? Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] Monaco Sidebar not changing
I've saved and re-saved various times, refreshed and even purged with ?action=purge the mainpage, but still the changes i make to Mediawiki:Monaco_sidebar doesn't appear on the sidebar it self, even though the page now reorts the correct list. What should I do? OriginalBBB

- Aha, it's because the default language of the wiki is Italian. If you view the wiki on Italian, the sidebar is correct. I am not sure if that is how it is supposed to work. I will ask. Kirkburn talk contr
13:22, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Maybe.....but What do you mean by saying, viewing the sidebar in italian? How do I chang the sidebar language?
- From sannse: "you will only see the edited version if you are logged out, or logged in with your preferences set for the same language as the wiki. If you are viewing in English, you will see the English default (or the local English version if there is on)".
- This means, on it.opensource, you edit Monaco-sidebar for the Italian interface, and Monaco-sidebar/en for the English interface (I have done this on your wiki). The help pages are not very good at explaining this at the moment - we'll try and improve them. Kirkburn talk contr

Thanks, thanks a lot!!! Where can I find information on this language problem? Where can i change on my profile the default language of view of my wiki? Is there antwhere a list of mediawiki pages? To know better what to try in other cases, if not it will always be a odissey
Temitope Ajileye or originalBBB
- Wouldn't it make sense for an Italian wiki to use an Italian interface by default? You can change your own interface from Special:Preferences, but if you want to change the default, I recommend asking via Special:Contact. For help with the Monaco MediaWiki messages, I recommend w:c:help:Help:Customizing Monaco. The help wiki has lots of other help too. Kirkburn talk contr

Hello Kirkburn,
We have an issue on TibiaWiki. On e.g. the Runes page (a list of all seperate rune pages) the images are showing up, despite being noincluded. See the discussion here. The discussion also contains a link to the image with the bug shown, if it doesn't show up for you. Since it might be a software bug I'm asking you to take a look at it.

Oh right, wasn't thinking when I said 'extension'.
One more question, not that I'm considering this, but would it be possible to limit people to the namespace they edit until they contribute a number of times elsewhere? I'm asking this because people tend to sign up and use the wiki as a blog and don't really do anything outside of their userpage, and it's really irritating because we don't have any policy against it.. -- Sixorish 05:55, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's technically feasible, but something we'd want to avoid doing due to the limitations it can place on users ... might making that policy (or guideline) be a good idea? Hey Kirkburn. I've posted two blogs now on the Star Wars Fanon wiki but my page, User blog:Squishy Vic, isn't updating at all (even after creating the page, clearing cache, etc.), and it's kind of a downer. I am currently keeping track of my blogs at my user page because of this, but I want to know why my blog page doesn't update like yours, as seen at User blog:Kirkburn. [edit] Custom Skins?
Hey, it's Exlonox from the Burnout Wiki. I was wondering if there is a way to create multiple custom skins for users to choose from? If so, how? Thanks, Exlonox 21:47, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Help At Burnopedia
Hi, its me the parkster! I'm here to ask for your help, as a staff, because there are three things, which we as a site need help with. Thanks if you can help:
- Unlike most Wikis we've created a user group, which is a step or bridge from normal users to sysops. They're called Assistants. At the moment thay have the Rollback right, but we've decided that we want the Assistants to have the ability to edit semi-protected pages and to delete and undelete. This would give them the potential to assist more. We would therefore like you to come and configure the assitants' user group rights. I'm not too good with advanced editing of the site and so i would appreciate it if you could carry out the changes. The forum topic on this is here.
- I also want to make a user a Bot. However it doesn't let me as it says that i can't change that certain user group. So could i please know how to make him a Bot. His account is Rappybot.
- Finally we would like to have our site on the spotlight but with two different spotlight pictures. The first is advertising the launch of our new online clan for Burnout Paradise and the other is promoting the site itself in the theme of Paradises' new part pack theme, which ironically also emphasises the site's first birthday on January 2nd. We would really like both pictures to be put on the spotlight from the 2nd for a few weeks, if that's ok.
We would greatly appreciate all of this. So thank you so much if you could help with these issues. We're very greatful. Regards, {{SUBST:User:The parkster/signature code}} 18:37, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
- Heya. I've passed on the spotlight requests to the gaming team - that should be possible, especially with your upcoming game release. Regarding the user group rights change, I recommend requesting it via Special:Contact. Finally, I will sort out the bot now :) Kirkburn talk contr
16:56, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for sorting that bot situation out. I have been holding off on manual repetitive edits because of that =). While I am here, do you know much about monaco.css editing? I have my own version of the file for a skin I wanted to use and recently an admin made a change to the sites monaco.css and I can't seem to override it with my custom one. The sites monaco.css added a height value to the Wikia image in the top left making the top page border to be flush with the search bar, when normally it is directly underneath the request a new wiki space. Any information you may have on getting my skin to override that change would be appreciated. Rappy talk 17:31, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, this is a great help. However do the gaming team know where to find the pictures? Also my signature isn't showing up and just has a template code. Could you please fix it? Thanks, {{SUBST:User:The parkster/signature code}} 16:32, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- I think you need to tick "Raw signature" in your preferences. For pictures, I'm sure they can find some, don't worry :) Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] help
i noticed i am somehow not doing this right..maybe you could help me? I'm just lost when it comes to this
[edit] Starter wikis
Hi! I'm helping a little with w:c:fr.starter and looking for guidance to help the native French speakers. Very little info where one might expect it.
Noticing that there were some specialised starters, I looked at the gaming one. Didn't look as if it was fully usable yet. So I created a couple of wanted categories. I saw that you've been doing a lot with it lately, but then I came across some year-old category deletions. First one gave no meaningful reason, but the second one, "Community", gave as the reason the fact that it duplicated Starter. Then I looked at the deletion log and saw more of those.
So I presume that the gaming starter gives only pages that are not in the standard Starter (so that a new wiki gets all of Starter and whichever "add-on" it wants), plus a gaming-oriented Main Page. If that is so, it should be stated somewhere obvious, e.g. in the relevant paragraph on Wikia starter pages.
Now that I see what's probably going on with the "custom" starters, you're welcome to delete my three recent creations, but I look forward to seeing more documentation so that non-staff can contribute usefully.
— Robin Patterson (Talk) 13:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)
- Yup, that's the way it works :P Starter kit is created first, then the gamingstarter kit is overlaid on top of it. Agreed we could probably do better documentation for it - I'll see if I can tweak that info page for it now. Kirkburn talk contr

[edit] Questions
- Moved from Wikia starter pages by Michaeldsuarez.
Hello. Sorry to add this to your user page, but it seems that I can not start pages on this wiki. Not even talk pages. Could you start your discussion page so that I can comment there? Please move this to there.
Also, I can not start the talk page for w:c:starter:Template:Documentation/doc
There is a problem with nested templates and categorization. I had to add w:c:starter:Category:Image wiki templates directly to w:c:starter:Template:Other free and w:c:starter:Template:From Wikimedia in order for them to show up at w:c:starter:Category:Image wiki templates
It is bizarre. The category name was showing up at the bottom of those templates when the category was placed via the transcluded doc page. But the templates were not listed when looking at the category page itself.
They are listed there now because I added the category directly to the template pages. Via <noinclude> tags.
For more info please see my edits of w:c:starter:Template:Documentation/doc, and my edit summaries there.
I looked at some of the various doc pages for the various image tag templates. I could not tell any difference in the wikicode used to place the category. So I assume it is some kind of inconsistent nested transclusion problem. I have read of these types of problems elsewhere.
I came here to the starter wiki because I happened to be working on image license templates on the wiki I administer (Weed Wiki). I was looking for ideas by examining various image tags elsewhere.
Also, can you start my user page and user talk page here? --Timeshifter 15:52, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for telling me about templates.wikia. Maybe it would still be better to have less transclusion in this case anyway. Otherwise some people are going to be very confused by the ins and outs of nested transclusion and cache purging. It is already a brain teaser to figure out <noinclude> and <includeonly>. :) --Timeshifter 16:02, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Well, that's why I have a description on the documentation/doc page - but yes, they certainly aren't easy to remember :P I'll see if I can improve it at all later. Edit: for the cache purging bit, I think that's a one-time issue; the updates came from imports. Kirkburn talk contr

- As someone who only now created most of the image license templates at the Weed Wiki, I think I can say that most people will not create doc pages. So the categorization of the image license templates may not occur on many wikis unless the categorization is included directly on the image license template page.
- I have been the admin at the Weed Wiki since June 2007, and it took me this long to figure out what I needed concerning image licenses, and how to create what I needed. Everything is so byzantine and complex. And I also have around 25,000 edits combined between Wikipedia and the Commons.
- I don't think many MediaWiki developers really understand ease of use, and intuitive graphical user interface principles. I think there should be a set of default image license templates already setup for all wikis. Admins can fine tune it all later, add more templates, and remove unneeded templates, etc..
- In the meantime though, all wikis would start having more images sooner. Images and embedded videos are what really make wikis interesting, and they are what get new users involved in editing, I am finding out. If they can't just select an image tag from a license selector, then they are not interested in my opinion.
- Thanks again for pointing me to templates.wikia. It points to the mediawiki Template repository. It talks about the need for "starter" or "default" templates. My suggestion is that they come already installed on new Wikia wikis. Old Wikia wikis need them installed too. It also suggests that for licenses there not be any variables. I agree. It is hard enough just to get new users to use the license selector. --Timeshifter 17:25, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- All new wikis on Wikia have these templates, that's the basis of our starter kit :) Unfortunately, it's not very easy to port that back to other wikis, which was part of the reason why templates.wikia was created: to collate such useful wikis, and put them in a form that they can be understood and copied.
- Definately understand what you mean about making stuff easy and more intuitive: we have a new editor coming up which should help newbies avoid having to learn wikicode (see Help:New editor for info on that). Kirkburn talk contr
17:27, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks. The table editor at Help:New editor looks very interesting. On which wikis is this being beta tested? I created this page on the Commons: commons:Commons:Chart and graph resources, and have long been looking for easier chart and table editing.
- I saw this at the Help Wiki: "Please note: The Help namespace is locked due to Shared Help. If you would like to suggest changes to an article, please use the relevant talk page." Maybe something like that note and system could be added to the Starter Wiki. I hate looking for the right forums and talk pages outside of the wiki I am currently reading. --Timeshifter 18:13, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
- Not sure if that is possible, I was told to be careful with what I added to the wiki because all pages (including user pages and mediawiki messages), are copied to the new wikis, this would mean that particular sitenotice (or an alternative method) would be in effect on any new wikis that were made. Most default MediaWiki messages belong on the messaging wiki. Though I do see your point there. :) --CharitwoTalk 18:20, 15 December 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks again. Could parts of the New editor be implemented on Wikipedia? For example; could a table sandbox be set up using the new table editor? So people could create tables there in the sandbox area, and then copy them to Wikipedia or Wikia pages? The table sandbox could be linked from the table help pages, and elsewhere. --Timeshifter 13:19, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

- I copied Template:Ambox from http://templates.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Ambox to the Weed Wiki. But its documentation says "This templates requires sitewide CSS!" Is that sitewide CSS installed on the Weed Wiki? I tried creating a template using w:c:cannabis:Template:Ambox but it did not work. --Timeshifter 13:19, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
- Wikia is entirely separate to Wikipedia, so I cannot really talk for them. For the ambox CSS, it is not included by default, so what you likely need is listed at http://templates.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Ambox#CSS_required Kirkburn talk contr

- Where do I put it? I searched the Weed Wiki (via http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Search) for MediaWiki:Common.css and variations of it. I could not find anything. On the template wiki there is http://templates.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.css and it includes the Template:Ambox CSS.
- Do I create the MediaWiki:Common.css page on the Weed Wiki? Does this override default Wikia CSS? What is the default CSS? Where do I find it? Why can't I set up the CSS on the Weed Wiki to use default Wikia CSS so that as it changes so does my copy of it on Weed Wiki? Is it already set up that way? Is Template:Ambox#CSS_required part of the default Wikia CSS. Why not? This is very confusing.
- Also, could Wikia set up a table sandbox for the new editor? I am like a little kid who keeps asking questions... :)
- Here are some specifics about the ambox template on the Weed Wiki:
- This template uses it:
- It is used on this page:
- I set it up as a top banner. It also adds this category to whatever city page it is used on:
- Category:City pages needing links or info about local cannabis activism
- I intend to use the banner on many empty Global Marijuana March city pages. See all the red links for the 500+ cities listed at Global Marijuana March. --Timeshifter 16:49, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
(Unindenting) You may find w:c:help:Help:Skins useful in understanding more how the skins work. For this specific example, I have added the CSS to http://cannabis.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Common.css - common.css adds extra CSS tweaks and classes to all the wiki skins. It's a little hard to explain how it works, but the important bit is done for now :) The ambox stuff is not part of the sitewide CSS as people like to customize and design such stuff themselves, and we don't like to force too much stuff on wikis, especially if they have previously done it another way.

Hi Kirkburn.
Can you check out this dispute and give your opinions please?
BTW, I think the comments second from bottom from McJeff were uncivil and had ownership issues. Dan the Man 1983 15:40, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
- The incivility and ownership started with Dan. For some reason, he believes being a bureaucrat gives him the right to "veto" other people's edits. [4] [5].
- Dan also has the problematic habit of making controversial changes and then insisting that I wait for consensus, which I believe is the opposite of the way things are supposed to work - see the edit history of this article for one of several examples. McJeff 16:28, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tabs on main page
Hey, I have had an idea for a tabbed Main Page for a while and recently decided to propose a change for it. Then I ran into a problem that in order to do it with the knowledge I have, I'd have to have a brand new page for each tab. Then I ran across WoWWiki and noticed that they do exactly what I want to do with Burnopedia. Upon further research I find that you are a beurocrat over there and must have some information on what I should do to make this work using javascript. If you get a chance, peruse this and this to see what it is I am working on and how I currently have it setup. I know it's not the best way to do it, but that's the limitation on what I can do. If nothing else, can you point me in the right direction for js help I could use to tackle this ordeal. Any help would be appreciated. Rappy talk 03:57, 24 December 2008 (UTC)
