[edit] Re Homeworld Wikia

  • Let me be first one to make edit here :)
So... Thanks for the news! I should clean up a bit out there, hehe :) I was wondering - if you perhaps know any hints for keeping editors for a longer while on my wikia. I've got quite lot of ppl who come, make edits in 1-2 days, and then go away - what isn't cool :( I think I made everything I could - greeting new visitors, making forum, creating news, helping people as fast as I can... still no results good :/ Maybe there are some things I could do to keep ppl at least for a week... SkywalkerPL 10:53, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Skywalker, keeping editors interested is rather difficult :(, I would say things like posting welcome messages on their talk page to open a dialogue on what needs to get done on the wiki is a good start. It sounds like you're trying hard, so it could just be the game(s) or the editors. Let's see if we can get some good editors with the spotlight. Also, you might want to try recruiting in the official forums or talk to Relic for some links. BTW, I am more than happy to help you with Relic if need be :). -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 15:41, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
Relic already featured Encyclopedia Hiigara on it's community links page - few nice words they wrote there :). I'm also advertising it on community forums, both English and Polish (as that's my native language). Well, hopefully spotlight will bring some fresh blood. ;) SkywalkerPL 16:34, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Gaming wiki

Hi, I've been trying to create a wiki on various other hosts (gameapedia) for gaming reviews, strategies, guides and walkthroughs as well as character information etc. Basically one wiki for gaming information. The reason I haven't tried wikia (which is the best wiki host around in my opinion) is due to wikia gaming. All of these other hosts have really let me down, so I've decided to have a go at getting wikia to host it. I think it could be different to wikia gaming as wikia gaming seems to be a hub for other wikis, with some gaming content. I am doubtful that gameapedia can be created on wikia, but I thought that I may as well try, so I've left a message here to discuss with you before I try to request it. If you would like to discuss this more than please leave a message on my talk page or I might be in #swgames on the IRC. Many thanks, Hunterj | My talk 20:25, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

  • As an extra note, in my opinion gameapedia shouldn't host info on online games, just licensed PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and the older consoles etc games.Hunterj | My talk 20:30, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
  • I'm not sure if you've not been around, if I'm being impatient, or if I didn't expalain my message properly (which is most likely) but I was talking to sannse who reccommended that I talk to you, as a member of the wikia gaming community, for your opinion of my idea before I try to request it. So if you get a chance could you please leave a message on my talk, or I might be in #R&C on the IRC. Many thanks, Hunterj | My talk 17:22, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello

I am Nicmavr, and I work on the Greek halopedia here:http://el.halo.wikia.com/wiki/%CE%91%CF%81%CF%87%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AE_%CF%83%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%AF%CE%B4%CE%B1

Anyways, I'm intersested in becoming a wikia helper, so, how and where would I do that?

Nicmavr 13:19, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Nicmavr, thanks for the interest. If you would like to email me at douglas at Wikia-inc.com, I will walk you through what we look for, and what responsibilities being a helper entails. Cheers! -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 18:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] StarCraft wiki flowchart templates

Hello. I'm the bureaucrat of the StarCraft wiki.

As you know, StarCraft II is coming out. One of the new features are very branched missions, which you can see here (the names are joke names currently) and I thought the wiki could use a flowchart template (with boxes that could link to the appropriate pages) to arrange them in the proper order when the game comes out.

I've been introduced to this flowchart template from MediaWiki and want to make a request to install it. Kimera 757 (talk) 03:04, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Jumpgate Evolution Wiki Guidelines

At the Jumpgate Evolution wiki we're working on some editing guidelines. I wondered if could check them to see they aren't out of line with wikia's general guidelines. Thanks. --Lord Alderaan 16:41, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

I just wanted to say: thanks!

Also, do you know where to go for technical issues? I've had a few, I did send em on to JoePlay but I have the suspicion he's a bit busy right now though he's been really helpful so far!

(by the way, spam filter is acting a bit funny:

The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to an external site.

The following text is what triggered our spam filter: Thanks!

[edit] What is

this? Central Wikia is inactive? — Image:BalisticSig.png 17:19, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

a bug. Should have been promoted on Assassin's Creed, somehow affected Central. -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 17:43, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
I see. Nevermind. — Image:BalisticSig.png 21:02, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

[edit] StarCraft slideshow

I tried the first slideshow here: [1]

It isn't working at the moment (neither is the preview), but I'll check that daily to see if it starts up. If so, I'll spread it to the StarCraft forums I visit. PSH aka Kimera 757 (talk) 22:16, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I can't get any images to load :(...let me see what's up and I'll get back to you. -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 00:29, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Bladebronson to the rescue, so you need to put in the image url (just click on the image until you can't click anymore, and that will be the image not the page url) also, try this code
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" width="300" height="250" align="middle" id="wikia_widget"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /> <param name="movie" value="http://images.wikia.com/common/skins/common/flash_widgets/wikia_widget.swf" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /> <param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <embed src="http://images.wikia.com/common/skins/common/flash_widgets/wikia_widget.swf" FlashVars="backgroundColor=336699&backgroundImage=&borderColor=333333&dropShadow=on&headerColor=000000&headerAlpha=.2&headerBorderColor=FFFFFF&headline1=StarCraft Wiki presents&headline1Color=CCCCCC&headline2=the protoss airforce!&headline2Color=FFFFFF&clickURL=http://starcraft.wikia.com&wikiURLColor=FFFFFF&wikiaLogoColor=FFFFFF&logo=http://images.wikia.com/starcraft/images/b/bc/Wiki.png&type=slideshow&slideshowImages= http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/3/3d/Phoenix_SC2_Rend1.jpg, http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/1/1d/VoidRay_SC2_Rend1.jpg, http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/0/02/Carrier_SC2_Cncpt1.jpg, http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/starcraft/images/7/71/Mothership_SC2_Game1.jpg&=Preview images in the widget&" quality="high" wmode="transparent" width="300" height="250" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" name="wikia_widget" /> </object>

[edit] Demigod wiki

Hi, thanks for your messages (on both demigod and supcom). I don't think I'll be overwhelmed, as most players will be too busy actually playing the game than editing, so I think I'll be fine. If we need any help, I'll be sure to contact you. I've been on the forums, but under monarch_dodra. Happypal 07:55, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Great, we put up a spotlight for you guys and we'll be around helping out. Cheers -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 17:22, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Re Assassins Creed Wikia

I would like to thank you for your willingness to help me create a new main page on Assassins Creed Wiki. I took a look at the links you gave me and I wouldn't mind a Main Page similar to that of Last Remnant Wiki. I will be inactive within the next week or so on the 4 Wiki's I am an Administrator on due to problems at home. Please don't hesitate to leave messages on any of my Talk pages s I will respond as soon as possible. --Hells Angel 12:47, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Wikia Newsletter

As admin and frequent editor at the Burnout wiki, the newsletter gave me some great insight. I wanted to drop by tell you that your efforts are appreciated and that I'm looking forward to the next issue. Thanks, Exlonox 02:32, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

It said to tell you ideas - it didn't say where, so I thought I'd go here. I think the next Newsletter should say something about deprecated tags. The only reason they squeak by here is because the doctype here is transitional, not strict. Some examples, in case your not familar with them, are:
  • <font> tags. (A quick note - you have two in your sig)
  • "clear" attributes on <br> tags.
  • "bgcolor" attributes.
  • "width" attributes.
  • <center> tags.
  • "align" attributes.
All of this markup has been deprecated by the W3C in favor of CSS. I always feel horribly peeved by these things, and I feel more people should be aware of the problem. TimerootTCE 00:21, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
Awesome, thanks for the feedback =0), I'll make sure to have a link to the most common markup issues, and include tags. -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 17:26, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] A few questions

Hi! Firstly, I want to congratulate and thank you on your magnificent work on the newsletter. It was very interesting and helpful and expanded my knowledge of "increasing wiki notability" (everyone knows it is the downfall of wikis).

Anyway, one of my questions is: Is it possible to move wikis to Wikia? Some wikis that are not hosted here are bigger than the ones we do host. I don't own any other wikis but is it possible to get an agreement with them and mutually move their information over to our Wikia server? Because I like editing on Wikia rather than other hosting sites (Examples: theirs, ours)  :)

Also, I seem to wander from wiki to wiki, never really settling in. Am I welcome to wander around to other wikis on subjects I like, boost 'em up a bit with info and notability then kind of leave? I've done this in the past and the communities were pissed when I left  :(

Related to above, if I create a new wiki on a subject I am interested in and do the "boost em, leave em" kind of style, is that alright or should you be always committing to the wiki you create?

Thanks! Chicken-7 talk 01:22, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

PS - Your reply doesn't have to be as big as this  :P PPS - Please reply on my talk page, if possible.

Thanks mate. So it is allowed to move another wiki from another hosting website, to ours? I know you can move one with it's own domain (eg. tvwiki.org). But what if there is one being hosted by another wiki hosting website? (pbwiki.org/tvwiki) Thanks. Chicken-7 talk 06:00, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
Yup, as long as they can provide a database dump. We import wikis all the time ;) -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 01:02, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Help

Lleowen, the Webkinz wikia has great content (over 2,200 pages) but we can't get enough users to know about it. We've applied for a wikia spotlight but that isn't working. Could you tell me how we could let people know about the webkinz wikia?--I Bcrat 00:45, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

sure, we'll see if we can get a spotlight for ya. In the meantime, have you reached out to other Webkinz communities. Sometimes forums and other fansites are great resources, and a good place to find active community members - who are far more valuable than just viewers. Cheers, -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 00:52, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Ya, I contact Ganz daily and I've e-mailed Webkinzinsider and this other webkinz site (I forget)--I Bcrat 20:01, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] SEO

Hey Doug, have you (or other staff) considered writing a Help article on SEO with detailed information on what works best, strategies, and specific MW pages that would help their Google results? Considering you at least are pretty knowledgeable on the subject based upon your performance with The Magic Bullet, I was wondering if you or perhaps someone with similar knowledge could write something out on the help wiki so I can link some people to it :) Thanks! ~Joey~ ^Talk^ 03:32, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Joey, We absolutely should have one! /me thinks for a second. I'll see what I can put together, and get something up quickly. Thanks for the note, and glad to see you liked the newsletter :0). Cheers -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 20:07, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] ShareThis

Uberfuzzy instructed me to hunt you down if I wanted a ShareThis like BioShock enabled on Redwall. This is me hunting you down. -- LordTBT Talk! 08:12, September 12, 2009 (UTC)

Ha! THe product is being rebuilt and will go live shortly, on all gaming wikis...let me see if we can set up another "test" on Redwall with the product team. Cheers! -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 17:43, September 14, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Thanks for the help

Hi Doug,

Thanks, I'd love to take that position ;)! Usually I have a faster response, but I've been playing Halo 3:ODST all day. If you need any other information, just ask ;). Mark (Tedjuh10) - Talk 18:26, September 22, 2009 (UTC)

One question; what exactly will my responsibilities be, are they like these? Mark (Tedjuh10) - Talk 15:54, September 24, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Wikia Gaming Community Newsletter

There was one of these sent out on the 1st of May, but nothing since. Is there an estimated time for another newsletter?

Here are a couple of random comments about the newsletter:

  1. The newsletter I have on my own wiki contains some information that I'm sure will be useful to editors in the long term. Is there any way that the newsletter can move over to a system similar to the shared help? I think that you could drop the latest newsletter onto all of the gaming wikis, but retain an archive of older newsletters at gaming.wikia.com.
  2. If you do continue with these newsletters, I think that it is important for Wikia Gaming to realise that tabletop RPGs do not have the same needs as computer games. Whenever anything is rolled out for Wikia Gaming it is stacked towards promotion of the computer games. There are a lot more computer game based wikis (both standalone games and online games) so it does make sense to give them more support, but non-computer game wikis often have links to inappropriate wikis dumped onto them (automaticaly). Admins need to be shown how to pull this content and replace it with more appropriate content.

In the case of my own wiki: Spelljammer Wiki, it is far more appropritate for me to be linked to a wiki like Forgotten Realms Wiki or even PathfinderWiki than the sort of wikis that the automated scripts dump onto my pages. In the long term some sort of subcategorisation of gaming wikis (with a way for automated tools to not push non-smiliar wikis) would be the best way to go, but in the meantime, these tools pretty much spam the top gaming wikis regardless of how simiar they are. People on specialist wikis need to be able to find these links, identify more appropriate links and swap them over. I think this sort of problem...and solution...would be a very good topic for the next newsletter. David Shepheard 11:56, October 18, 2009 (UTC)

David, thanks for the feedback! We have plans on rolling out a new newsletter by the end of the year with more help for all wikis. It's hard to address specific concerns (and appeal to the masses) but I understand where you are coming from. Most, if not all of the recommendations in the newsletter are general enough for any community (D20 or console) to use...in fact any wiki anywhere can use them. We're working on a way to better distribute the newsletter as well, so stay tuned.

[edit] Spotlights

Hey there

I'm sorry to bother you, I was just hoping you could explain something. UnAnswers was quite excited when we saw this, but it's been a while and we've yet to see anything, despite seeing the other removed Wikis being spotlighted.

We were just wondering what's going on, so I'd be very grateful if you could give me a heads-up. Cheers. A F K When Needed 15:28, October 29, 2009 (UTC)

Oops, with depressing inevitability...
Well, just seen it, so sorry again for bothering you.
I guess there just be more wikis being spotlighted than I realized :-) A F K When Needed 16:20, October 29, 2009 (UTC)
yeah, the que can contain a handful of communities at any given time, but we got you in the mix. -- Doug@Wikia (talk) 17:02, October 29, 2009 (UTC)
