[edit] Layout problem with new skin

Hi - I've posted this problem in the Inside forum, but it doesn't seem to be a very busy forum at the moment, and I was wondering if you could do anything yourself. It seems to be the case that, with the new skin, the 'top content' box always appears for those who are not logged-in to the wiki I've just started (http://chainsofreason.wikia.com/wiki/Home). The presence of this box, along with the ad box, means that the navigation box is quite far down the screen - indeed, it is actually off the screen on my laptop when the ad box is square-shaped (as opposed to when it is a not-so-high oblong shape when displaying 'Wikia Spotlight' ads). Is it possible to have this 'top content' box not show, or at least show below the navigation box? Please reply on my talk page, thanks. Derrick Farnell (talk) 18:12, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi - I didn't get a reply to the above. Derrick Farnell (talk) 14:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Sorry I missed this one Derrick, on my way to your talk page now -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:11, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RS Wiki sysop

Hi. There is a certain sysop on the RuneScape Wiki who has been behaving very inappropriately lately. Dreadnought has always been "the mean admin", but lately he's been making personal attacks and abusing his powers in general. A while ago, he attacked Whiplash here and called Gangsterls an idiot here. I tried to act appropriately by blocking him for a day according to policies, but he responded with fury by unblocking himself and blocking me here. I warned him that he was on his last toenail here, but he later persisted here. I do not think this is acceptable behaviour. I think that he should be desysopped semipermanently until he completes a successful RFA. Please respond on my RS Wiki talk page. Thank you. Dtm142 04:03, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Okay, I am adopting the Titanic wiki. Is there any way that I can find out the original mission statement for the wiki?

Hi, looks like there wasn't much of one... what there is is on the description page at Titanic. Looks like you can take it wherever you think it should go! Have fun :) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 16:51, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Halopedia Forums

Rename "Halo Forums" to "Halo," please, add a section called "Community," move the subsections "Halopedia Community" and "Help Desk" to "Community," and make a subsection called "Other Games" inside the "Community" section, please. [edit] Perverted works on Fiction wikia

The fiction wikia currently is undergoing a major debate over what stories ("works") should remain on the site. Quite a few works are particularly controversial. this one is one such case. The work is hard literotica/porn and thus I found at least parts of it inappropriate for the web site. I deleted such sections, but User:Serprex undid the "censorship" and now it's back to a really, really perverted story. What's more, for a fiction site, not only is the particular work bad taste, but it's also heavily lacking in either literary merit or humor/creativity, which means that it's not worth much.

This is actually an example of a larger conflict that we've been having. I'll tell you right away that I'm in favor of works in which people actually spend their time and effort to make into credible, good stories and poems with merit, because I see this as the best way to attract responsible, diligent new users in the long run, which is what we need if the site is to grow. Problem is, there are far more people who put up works of bad taste (such as works in made-up languages, works in which words are written backwards, works in which there's primarily random nonsense) and claim them to be good works unworthy of deletion. As a result, every once in a while an edit war occurs, depending on what we decide should or should not be kept on the site. Most of them are resolved peacefully rather quickly, and we all do our best to posit our points of view on talk pages.

It's hard though. And I have a feeling that if the bad works on this site aren't gotten rid of, newcomers will merely take it as an indication at they too can also submit horrible content, which perpetuates the cycle. And when the actual good writers show up for the first time and see the mess, they may be discouraged. Thankfully, there aren't too many such pages that I consider worthy of deletion, but I want to get this sorted out so in the future there will be less need for controversy. And I hope you'll agree with me that the best way to make a wikia for fiction is to remove shoddy, I-spewed-this-out-in-one-minute, perverted, random/jejune, pseudo-, controversial stories in favor of nice traditional poems, short stories, and novels that can actually attract attention. I hope you'll show up on the Fiction wikia and see for yourself.

Yunzhong Hou 14:15, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know about this. I've deleted that article, and will leave a message for the community. In general, it's best for the community to regulate themselves in this regard, and certainly issues of quality of writing are an issue for the wiki community and not for Wikia. But if the boundaries of offensiveness and sexual content are pushed too far, then we do have to step in. I hope the community can pull together to avoid that! Thanks again -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:07, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] fi.wikia problems

Hi sannse, regarding the problems with fi.wikia, I found another: CSS-related problem this time. MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Monobook.css are loaded in page HTML sourcecode, but seems that they have no effect whatsoever: w:c:fi:Wikia has ads, even though some ad-hiding CSS is defined on w:c:fi:MediaWiki:Monobook.css, in the per-page CSS (sivukohtainen CSS) section. .page-Wikia #column-google {display:none} is clearly there and it has worked before...very odd, please poke TOR/Splarka/someone about these problems.

Thank you. :) --Jack Phoenix (Contact) 22:44, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

Seems to be working today, including MediaWiki messages recentchangestext, mainpage and site CSS is working too...I really wonder what was up last night...oh well. --Jack Phoenix (Contact) 13:30, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I wan to change my "SITENAME"

Well, greetings and congratulations, I think wikia is a very good project.

I have asked somewhere about this topic, and they said me to ask you.

My wiki is http://es.wow.wikia.com/wiki/Portada , and his topic/Sitename is World of WarCraft.

I just want to change it to WarcraftWiki, cuz World of WarCraft doesn't fit entirely with the wiki, and no man in the wiki likes it.

If you can change it to WarcraftWiki , I will be so pleased.

Thanks a lot, --Lon-ami 16:04, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Hey sannse, I pointed this user your way because apparently the form doesn't like Splarka. :P -- Manticore Talk | Contributions 16:42, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks Manticore. Lon-ami, do you also want the project namespace as well? You have a few redirects in the "World of WarCraft:" namespace, and some articles that start with "WarcraftWiki:". If you want the namespace changed to WarcraftWiki too, then you need to move all articles using both the old and the new name. Otherwise they will break when I make the change. Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:33, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
Done. All the World of WarCraft articles have been deleted and moved to WarcraftWiki articles. I don't know if I explain well, but I only want to change all the names World of WarCraft to WarcraftWiki. I think that's the project name or the wiki's topic, don't know. Thanks ;).--Lon-ami 15:30, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, all the conflictive pages have been renamed. The namespace can be now changed with no problems.--Foxtreme (Contacto) 17:07, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Redirects are pages too ;) I deleted those, and changed the setting. You are now "WarcraftWiki"! You can move back any pages you want to now. Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:00, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Well, that was all, so thanks a lot! Continue with wikia, it's great!--Lon-ami 14:38, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

You may be able to get help in the Forum with that, or ask Dantman, I see he is an admin on Fiction. He's great with such things and should be able to help. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:41, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Request

I would like adminship on [4] please so i can help there.--Supericed 20:39, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, maybe you could work on the wiki you requested first? It's a bit daunting starting a wiki by yourself, but getting a few good pages on your topic there will be a good start. Then you can try and encourage other users to join you. You could work on two wikis at once, but maybe working on the one you founded will be the best first step. Good luck with the project! -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:24, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Cancel option for report a problem tabs

Is it possible to get a "Cancel" option added to the inpage form that appears when someone clicks on the "report a problem" tab?

It seems under the runescape.wikia.com (and possibly others) that some people have inadvertantly clicked on the "report a problem" tab, and decided they did not want to report anything, or maybe they were just looking. However, they have not worked out how to get out of it, so end up clicking the "Report a problem" button to get out.

I think a "Cancel" or "Cancel report" button next to the "Report a problem" button would make it more obvious. This new button could just hide the form again.

Anyway, just a suggestion. Thanks. Amaurice (talk) 14:13, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

And a good one! thanks :) I'll pass this on to the developer working on the feature. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 23:15, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tyler Warren

Just a heads up for you. I've posted this on Angela's talk page too, but since she's a bit busy with house moves, etc, I thought I'd message you too.

The runescape.wikia.com site had a problem with repeated major attacks from 2 or 3 specific people over a period of time, using IP switchers, etc. One of the major vandals was someone know as "Total Rune" (real name Tyler Warren). It now seems that he has got his own wikia at odyssey.wikia.com. It's possible that he will now be constructive rather than destructive (see Runescape:User talk:Tyler Warren). I just wanted you to be aware of it. Amaurice (talk) 14:19, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting us know, we will keep an eye out :) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 18:14, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sockpuppet vandalism and spamming at several wikis

Recently a user named Assaulthead has appeared on a number of wikis (StarCraft, C&C, Transformers, and South Park, possibly others) and made a large number of spam edits. When confronted by administrators, he deleted their warnings and harassed some of them. He was eventually banned from StarCraft, C&C and Transformers for these activities.

When he first appeared on the StarCraft wiki, he originally didn't have an account, and at first used the name Sideways (which has also since been banned). Since then, he has come back with different account names, such as Soldier 79, and continued to spam the various wikis (and deletes warnings from his talk pages, to the point that these pages were sometimes locked after he was banned). His style of communication is distinctive, and he always puts "I'm not Assaulthead" in his new user page; I'm 99% sure the other accounts are sockpuppets.

I am requesting a checkuser on his IP in order to be 100% sure that it's the same person, hopefully so that all the accounts can be blocked at the same time.

For the StarCraft wiki, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.234.144.73, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.234.145.190, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Contributions/69.234.99.35, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Sideways, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Assaulthead, http://starcraft.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Soldier_79 and possibly others.

For the C&C wiki, http://cnc.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Assaulthead, User talk:Smugface the untrustworthy dwarf and http://cnc.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Soldier_79

For the teletraan-1 wiki, http://transformers.wikia.com/wiki/User_talk:Assaulthead - this shows the most vivid reasons why he has been blocked from so many wikis.

Sorry if this message appears someplace else; I tried using the private "contact us" form but my computer crashed at the exact moment I hit the send button.

PsiSeveredHead 19:34, 27 October 2007 (UTC) [5]

Hi, yes, they look like the same person. You could try blocking 76.247.222.101 and 69.234.0.0/16 - although I wouldn't keep the second blocked for too long, it's a common IP -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:45, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] World: namespace for Animepedia

Sannse, could you add a "World" namespace to the Animepedia? If you want the technical reasons, keep reading... ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Nov 29, 2007 @ 04:35 (UTC)

I've been rethinking some of my methods and setups for the technical aspects of the top-level Wikia ACG wiki.

I needed some technical pages for each world, for tweaking things like category names and other I've been using a set of subpages for those purposes (Like Worldname/Tech/Info/Category for the category naming) but I've realized there are a few issues with that. Other than the facts that I need to do extra DPL stuff to hide them from showing up in lists, and they also clutter up the Allpages for the Main namespace. They actually alter the page counts and mess most things up for counting. And the method of using [[:User talk:Sannse/Tech/Templates/Templatename]] for templates that are meant for a certain world doesn't seam like such a good idea anymore.

Looking over how Semantic MediaWiki did things, I have seen that it would probably be a good idea for me to actually split that apart to work in multiple of the namespaces instead of just the main. Partly actually putting templates in the Template namespace, and keeping CSS in the MediaWiki namespace. And as for the technical pages, like how SMW did it those would be put in a special namespace. (SMW Has Type:, etc... namespaces to modify how SMW works; I'd be using a World: namespace in a similar way).

It would be best to organize things now, or else the wiki could end up messed up if the bad format is used in the meantime. I'd just prefix things with World: but then that would mean that a SQL query would probably half to be done. So mind adding the World: namespace now, it's useful even now because the templates already are using techniques that use the organization. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Nov 29, 2007 @ 04:35 (UTC)

Hi Dantman, that's all done. I probably didn't need to delete and restore the pages starting in "world", I was just being cautious ;) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 09:33, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Yup, thanks. Nah, you didn't need to worry about that. It actually doesn't matter that they are deleted because the rows still exist with the same ns-id/db_key pair. The technical reason why pages disappear is just because the pages with the ns-id override the ones prefixed with the db_key. Basically everything is still there, it's just that the new namespace makes another set of pages display instead, but that only happens with "Namespacename:". ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Nov 30, 2007 @ 17:12 (UTC)

[edit] RS Wiki

Hello, you'll remember me as Total Rune from the RuneScape Wikia, who you did a checkuser on awhile back and told all the sysops to ban me on the spot due to vandalism. However, you only know half the story.

My account on the Wikia, Total Rune, was created by my brother Nicholas. He logged onto my laptop while I was at work and took pictures and made the account pretending to be me, which he has done on other websites and such and has gotten me banned from. He vandalised and got himself banned. I got ahold of him and the password to the account and I switched it to something Nicholas did not now, and I took control of the Total Rune account. I requested an unblock and explained myself and got the unblock.

However, several months later, problems arose as many Wikia members began prodding me and poking their noses into my personal life, some of which even just trying to get me banned. I finally snapped and vandalised a few times to get myself banned on purpose. However my brother still wanted to edit the wiki.

Now we have a wireless router and a wireless internet connection, which is shared by my laptop, my sister's laptop, my brother's laptop and my parents desktop computer. He returned to the RuneScape Wikia and continued to vandalise several times, getting himself banned alot. I found out about a Proxy website, located here from a user on the RuneScape Wikia, User:Blankothe3rd. My brother saw the site and began using it to get around his bans and continue to vandalize.

However, because of your checkuser and such, the sysops on the Wikia started labelling every vandalism from my IP addresses/network as "Total". They would just write "Total" as the block reason. I admit, I did use a proxy once or twice to leave an apology to User:Clv309, but she continued to hold a grudge against me, as does every other wikia user.

Because of your checkuser, and the Wikia continuing to mis-label every vandalism from my home as being done by me, which they were not, that ruined my reputation in RuneScape itself. I had people insulting me and calling me "noob" and "idiot" and "scammer" because of them. But these personal attacks ingame have since ceased, thank god.

I have already spoken with Angela about doing something to get the sysops on the RuneScape Wikia to stop claiming that every vandalism from my IP addresses/network was done by me, because to be truthful, 99% of the vandalisms from my network are my brother.

I feel I am owed an apology from the sysops on the RuneScape Wikia for damaging my reputation by falsely claiming all vandalisms from my home network are me. Also, I wish to see that the sysops on the RS Wiki stop putting "Total Rune" or "Total" as the reason for whenever they block a vandalizing IP from my network, because it's not me, it's my idiot brother. Thank you for taking the time to read this. 69.159.56.155 07:33, 29 November 2007 (UTC) (Total Rune, formerly from the RuneScape Wikia)

If you aren't interested in contributing to the wiki, I suggest you just move along. Labelling every instance of IP vandalism as being from the same user isn't a good idea, but it's quite possible the pattern of vandalism is similar for each IP, and thus the admins there are assuming it is you. I wouldn't wait around too long for an apology, because it's clear there are major issues between you and the administrators (and probably the community at large), which frankly, were instigated by you. As Angela said, there are many other wikis you can get involved with. -- Manticore Talk | Contributions 09:13, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
In fact the staff member who did the checkuser was user:Rieke Hain. See the page here. My personal favorite is the line:
"There is definitely no point in believing those claims regarding "brothers and sisters" and "I didn't note that they vandalized". CheckUser results are pretty clear (logged in as A, logged out, logged in as B, logged out, logged in as A again … all within minutes)."
--Wowbagger421 00:56, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Checkuser does not show login/logout information. --CharitwoTalk 07:08, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Checkuser can't tell who is on the other end of a keyboard. But if there are a succession of edits from the same IP (which usually means the same computer, if the time-frame is narrow) then it's generally likely that it's the same person, and that changes of username are the same person logging and and out. Of course, there are variations to this, including a shared IP on a home network. And it is possible for siblings to be editing from the same IP and one of them causing problems. But the "my bother did it" explanation has become something of a cliche. We hear it so many times that it becomes difficult to believe.

In the end, it becomes a matter of what is best for the wiki, and the wiki community. If that means blocking an IP because one person using it is causing problems, then so be it. Even if that means others on that IP as inconvenienced.

Total Rune, I would agree with the advice you've been given to just move on to something else. There is no way for the admins to know if you are telling the truth about your brother, and little reason for them to feel they should trust you at this point. But I think the real key to this is off-line. If your brother is causing these problems then perhaps it's time you asked your parents to intervene. It's only at your end of connection that his behaviour can be addressed and he can be stopped from causing you difficulties. After all, it's his behaviour that is causing this, not the admins'. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 09:50, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

I have moved on, I keep getting shown block log entries from the RS Wiki by my bro over msn, and I'm getting pissed off at them for always labelling his vandalisms as "Total". Also, I'm not gonna bug my parents over his little vandalisms. Heck, I told him when I got banned to have fun. But whatever, as long as they stop labelling his vandalisms as "Total" I'll be happy. 69.159.56.155 22:26, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
At this point it's up to you. There is no reason for the admins to believe you, and every reason given your behaviour for them not to trust you. If you want to change things, then it is up to you to stop the vandalism coming from your home. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 11:43, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bot status request

Can I ask you for bot status? I'm an administrator-burocrat of Nonciclpedia (italian parodistic encyclopedia). I've created my bot "HeavyBot", could it receive the bot status? Its presence on the "last modifies" page is getting annoying... :-) --User:Heavymachinegun 12:01, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Could you tell me whether the Nonciclpedia community is aware of this request, and agree with the change? Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 12:04, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] shoutbox on quartz bugs

  • format will change from timestamp to current date at certain times of the day
  • parses apostrophes like this: "it\'s don\'t won\'t"
  • users online is stuck at 357

--CharitwoTalk 22:15, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Charitwo. Do you have more info on the first one, It's not something I've been able to see happen yet. Thanks again -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 12:12, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
It appears to have been fixed? Haven't seen it happen today, I saw TOR's sock poking around in there, maybe whatever he did fixed that issue. However the latter 2 still remain. --CharitwoTalk 02:24, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Looks like they've got the number of users sorted too. The other is in the system, so they should squash it soon. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 10:35, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Still says 357 to me. --CharitwoTalk 04:58, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
Got it! I didn't see that each wiki shows the number differently and 357 was on ffxi. I've added a screenshot to the bug report. Thanks Charitwo -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 18:23, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Can't manage to open a Hebrew wiki in Wikia

I have had two very good ideas for potential Hebrew wikis which I am sure would be very sucessfull amongst the hebrew speaking users on the web. Unfortunatly, I havn't been able to figure out how to open a Hebrew Interface Wiki in which the text would show from right-to-left so far... at one point I even thought that it was impossible and that all the Hebrew wikis on Wikia didn't have a Hebrew right-to-left interface and in the best scenarios you could only add a div dir="RTL".. but just now I found out that one of the most popular Hebrew wikis on the web (eincyclopedia.wikia.com) is hosted in wikia so I know for sure that it got to be possible.. any ideas on how I could do this (please try to be as specific as you can)? --24.12.234.123 06:34, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi. All you need to do is request a wiki on the Requests Wikia, and be sure to select "Hebrew" from the language list. If you want to try out editing, we have a right-to-left scratchpad at Right to Left Scratchpad, but I'd suggest just requesting the wiki - that way the default interface will be in Hebrew -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 12:31, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] STEU project - short name

Hi Sannse; dunno if you remember me--Todd from Star Trek Expanded Universe. Anyway, judging from this, I'm going out on a limb and taking a guess that you might be able to help. Simply put, can we get our name shortened to just Star Trek Expanded Universe, rather than the existing Star Trek Expanded Universe Database? The previous has become our de facto project namespace, the one everyone commonly uses (and it's the namespace on our "official" pages). If you can help, great!, thank you, and have a wonderful holiday season. :) --Sasoriza 22:54, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, yes I can do this. But the old and new namespaces must be empty for this to work. So you need to move all pages starting with Star Trek Expanded Universe: or Star Trek Expanded Universe Database: out of the way. The best thing to do is to move them to something like Temporary: and then delete all the redirects. Then you can move them back once the new name is set up. Let me know when you are ready, or if you have any problem. Regards -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 10:48, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for responding. I'm in the process of doing this. Does a similar move have to be performed on the main page, as well as talk pages under the above namespaces? --Sasoriza 00:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Everything's set. All pages under the above namespaces have been moved under a Temporary: prefix. (+ I backed up the main page, just in case.) Just to reiterate, we'd like "Database" dropped from the project name, so that it reads "Star Trek Expanded Universe". Please let me know when we can move it all back after the name change, and thanks in advance for your time, help & attention! :) --Sasoriza 07:42, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Is there any progress being made on this? I'm perfectly willing to be patient, but we've got some community members getting antsy... --Sasoriza 21:28, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
Sorry about that! The weekend distracted me. All done now, and I'll help with the moves back by way of apology ;) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 20:57, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks again! Much appreciated! Have a great Christmas! --Sasoriza 22:32, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Monobook Ads at Dofus

Hi, sannse thanks for all your help with the monobook ads issue, seems the past few days this has been resolve. Cheers --Cizagna (Talk) 15:52, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad it's looking better! I can't claim any credit for that though, I'm sorry we couldn't find the problem. I suspect it may have been a change on the ad server, but it was hard to reproduce :-/ let me or Jae know if it shows up again -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 18:25, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
I think you got confuse i was referring to the monobook ads issue that for some reason the width was bigger than the rest and according to Angela she told you about this, The one i reported to you was the Quartz Ads bug with IE its another issue that i reported to you and then you reported to Jae and its still there but i may have nail the issue i will report to Jae as soon as i do more code comparatives so im sure. --Cizagna (Talk) 18:51, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Why have the (non-TeX) images disappeared from w:c:en.math? They don't appear to have been deleted. - dcljr 17:56, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, there was a mistake in the setting for the image directory. I've fixed it now, and images should be visible. It will take a while for everything to catch up, up to 24 hours. But after that all should be fine. Sorry for the problem! -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 18:50, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
It's fixed, as far as I can see. Thanks. - dcljr 23:45, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Narutopedia dispuit

Sannse mind getting in on this one? I'm personally getting tired of all the accusations of rants, slander, being uncalm, and threats to be reported. I suppose you could consider this a request for mediation, because this is getting to the point that the Narutopedia alone doesn't have the resources to handle this besides blocks. Don't worry about the debates on Japanese stuff, I've asked Yukichi to handle that bit.

The discussion is at w:c:naruto:Talk:Haku, but the article has been on hold for long enough. Just because of one user debating something that had previously been consensus on both Wikipedia and Narutopedia the ability to improve the article was removed. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Dec 8, 2007 @ 12:24 (UTC)

Ok, my limit of using the spirit of Wikipedia policies to deal with things here has been reached. I've returned to basing things on how they help the wiki. We're basically going along with WP:CIVIL's suggestion of putting a "wall" between the editor and the community. I'm leaving him unblocked for as long as I can, but if he continues reverting good faith edits on the article because they don't follow his statement of keeping the article "gender neutral" I might half to resort to some temp blocks so that other users are still able to improve the article. Could you deal with him? This isn't the kind of thing that the Narutopedia community deals with, and it's likely they'd just opt to block the user if someone else couldn't handle it. I have a feeling that if this were on Wikipedia, it would probably qualify as one of the Lamest edit wars. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Dec 9, 2007 @ 10:44 (UTC)
I don't think this is something I can deal with. This has to be worked on by the community and not by someone coming in to "solve" things. If this is one person disagreeing with the rest of the community, then that community needs to make some firm decisions and inform him that to continue editing there, he needs to follow the consensus. That may mean blocking him to demonstrate that he needs to listen to the community - it's sad, but it may be needed. If there are more varieties of opinion, then the task is to try and reflect them in the article in a way all can nearly be happy with, or to find a way to bring those opinions together. Perhaps this article will just need to be locked for a while, with changes agreed on the talk page - a bit of a pain, but one way of allowing the general opinion to prevail.
I think that learning to deal with this sort of dispute is something most communities go though. And staff interfering is likely to harm the community more than help it. I'm sorry not to be or more help. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:14, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Ok, for now it's a little bit under control. Because he was reverting good faith edits on the article and attacking every comment on the talkpage I temp blocked him and archived the previous discussion. The article is still free for editing by users so that it can be improved, (And trust me this diff shows you how much has been improved, even ignoring what Belive it! added, the article has significantly improved since he was temp blocked). The article is now actually being discussed properly by the existing community only on the talkpage. He'll be unblocked once enough feedback has been added. But if he tries to continue opposing the community and can't accept the consensus then we'll just half to permablock him. ~NOTASTAFF Daniel Friesen (DanTMan, Nadir Seen Fire) (talk) (tricks) (current topic) Dec 11, 2007 @ 06:25 (UTC)

Hi, I've got a question: [6] is automatically done in alphabetical order, but is it possible to do it in chronological order? Alexandru 20:26, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, yes, you can order in several ways, including by creation date or last edit date. See here for more... I think ordermethod=firstedit will probably be right for you. Let me know if you need help -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 10:55, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
OK, thank you. I'll try if it works. Alexandru 20:29, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
It works! Thanks! But now I have another question, how can I make a new namespace? This has to be "Krant:" on Wikistad, [7]. Alexandru 18:09, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
I can add this. But you need to make sure that there are no articles with the name Krant:whatever before I do so. The best thing is to move them to a temp: name, and then they can go back when the namespace is ready -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 00:08, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

It really hasn't been long since these users edited... try a message on their talk pages, that might help. If not, we'll leave it a bit longer and see if they turn up - we usually consider a wiki abandoned after 2 months. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 00:11, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi Sannse! I've had trouble making the MediaWiki:Edittools work on the Czech Memory Alpha [8]. We have the Extension:CharInsert installed, and still it is no good. Moreover, and I believe this is more important, the editing toolbar has disappeared. I can see it here, I can see it on English Memory Alpha, but no on the Czech one. Other Czech users report this problem as well. Thanks for your help! --JemHadar 15:39, 14 December 2007 (UTC)-

   * TaviRider Last edit : 2007-02-15T23:47:22 Left the wiki

--Cizagna (Talk) 19:19, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

Generally there is simply no need to deadmin inactive users, and our policy has always been to just leave them be. I have talked in the past about adding an inactive flag to admins who haven't been around for a while - which could be automatic and still not require reverting if the admin returns (it would automatically go if they started editing again). But I will bring up the subject with the staff team again, and see if people think we should change the way we do things -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 00:03, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, there's a great article on this at Forum:Attracting Contributors. The main thing is to talk about the wiki in places where people interested in the subject are likely to be. You need to find the people who want to talk about this subject, and invite them over. Be careful not to spam though! Nothing puts off prospective contributors like spamming. Good luck! -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 00:03, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Me again

Hi Lisa; me again--Todd from Star Trek Expanded Universe. Can you get someone to purge our wanted pages cache? The list maxes out at 1,000; I've been trying to get to more of them at the end, but those stricken blue links are hampering. Thanks! --Sasoriza 11:15, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the queue has been run again, but there are still some faulty entries. It looks like they are all in the "Star Trek Expanded Universe" namespace, so it looks like it's a bug to do with the change of namespace. I've tried to clear it by deleting w:c:stexpanded:Star Trek Expanded Universe:Policies and guidelines, creating the page, then restoring the old revisions and content. But we won't know if that works until the next queue run (which is currently happening every 48 hours). I suggest we look again then and see if that page has gone from the wanted pages list. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 19:02, 18 December 2007 (UTC) (not usually "Lisa", unless you are my mother ;)

[edit] Sockpuppet help

Hello, Sannse. I'm here to report on a sockpuppet that's has been vandalazing the Final Fantasy Wiki. We suspect it being the same user, Alte Roit, based on their style of edits. This list is based on their appearance:

We hope there can be some action as their edits are disruptful and constitutes vandalism. Thanking you in advance. Blue。 15:01, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

I've looked at his IPs, and he is using quite a large ISP with a wide range. That makes it hard to do a rangeblock, firstly because it will be a lot of blocks to catch all his range, and secondly it is very likely that other (good) users will be using the same IP range. I would suggest you block him as soon as you see him, and be sure to also block the IP he is using (see the options on the block page) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 17:21, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kingdom Hearts Wiki

Hello.
I come to you, because for a while now, the Kingdom Hearts wiki has been without sysops (and in extension, bureaucrats) since mid-August, leaving it practically unsupervised in that timeframe. I would therefor like to apply for sysop and bureaucrat rights for that wiki, so that I can employ a select few trusty editors to help me clean up the wiki and supervise it. I am already a sysop for the Final Fantasy wiki, which I have been for quite some time, so it is not like I am completely without experience.

My only concern (in the sense of: I don't know how to fix it) is that the former sysop seems to have been messing with the local settings and has created a problem for IE-users, since the "banner" that should have been in the bottom-most part of any page has been fixed in a position where it covers a big part of any page. I took a screenshot to illustrate what I mean.

Anyway, I hope my plea won't go unnoticed.

Sincerely,
Hecko X 15:47, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, it looks like that wikis has the beginnings of a community, so I suggest you set up a page to discuss new admins and try to gather as many people as possible to talk about it. You can invite people on their talk pages, or I can set up a site notice for you.
I've looked at the bug in the footer, but I can't reproduce it yet. I'll ask Jae to have a look, he should be able to help. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 17:41, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
I see. I've taken you up on your suggestion and added a discussion topic which can be seen here. I thank you for your time and coorporation and hope that we'll come to a conclusion soon. --Hecko X 18:28, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello again. I am not too fond of rushing things, but we've reached somewhat of a standstill in the admin discussion. Amongst those who signed up, I know that two of them will make excellent sysops, and we have even made a plan of stuff to start working on, however, everything more or less have to start off with mass-deletion of various stuff that really aren't needed, because we want to clean out the place before we start with our expansions, in order to make it easier for ourselves. So I was hoping that we could either speed up the granting of sysop rights process, or at least get a name of someone we can contact, who can delete all the pages, we mark for deletion, during their christmas holiday (which we would rather avoid, since none of us a comfortable with making someone else do our dirty-work during their time off). We of course hope to get more sysops (up to a maximum of 6) as we go along and people show that they are fully capable, but we can't make anything but minor edits until we get some sysops. --Hecko X 18:18, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Sorry, missed this one! I've left a message there. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 21:50, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dutch Dofus wikia

Hi, don't know what needs to be done about that, but the Dutch Dofus wikia has only had 52 pages added in one year, nothing added since june but garbage and rude words that are left unpatrolled (eg. their Iop page just says 'you mother is a whore', 'yours too'). I don't think it's good for Wikia's image... --Lirielle 16:11, 19 December 2007 (UTC) (a sysop on the English Dofus wikia)

Hi, is there anyone who would look after the wiki? Even if not editing there, they could check very few days for spam and problems... maybe you? That's what's been done for other inactive language versions of different wikis, and Ithink it would work well here. Thanks -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 17:44, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
Translation work is so hard because there isn't a guide on how to translate a wiki, and more when you are talking about game stuff since you could do the article in the original name and then all the content in the corresponding language, then there is the one where one can translate the article names but since the name in the first place is subjective a proper translation cant be done, then like Ankama (dofus game developers) has fully translate the game in 4 languages what language you pick as base? the english or the french (original from the game) or spanish or deutch?, for now the rest are more like wannabe wikis, since they know that they want to translate but how to do it is the problem and thats very depressing --Cizagna (Talk) 21:02, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Namespace on ru.starcraft wiki

Hi, could you please rename a project namespace on ru.starcraft wiki to 'StarCraft'? There're no pages in it yet. Медиа (Media) 19:21, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, this is done. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 11:45, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How can I get rid of the

Most of the users in the Arabic uncyclopedia have been complaining about the ads on the site, they are too big and located on the far left in a way that they overlap on the articles, is there away to make some changes and get rid of that hassle or at least make it smaller that it won't overlap on the articles, this might be due to the fact that arabic is written from right to left ? the other problem is we are having the GNU FDL License banner at the middle of the page insted of being at the end, thanks for all your help Classic 971 09:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, we can't remove the adverts, they are what pays for the free hosting! But they shouldn't be overlapping the articles. The first thing to check is that you haven't any tables or images that are simply too big for everything to fit in. On some screen resolutions you need to take care that you don't fill the with too much or things will start to overlap. But if this isn't the case, then perhaps you could take a screenshot of the problem? With that, and the exact title of the pages affected, I can look more closely. The problem with the footer being too high on IE6 is a known one - our tech guys hope to have that fixed soon. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 12:25, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Recurring multi-wiki troll is back

Multi-banned multi-wiki troll popped up again, with the IP 69.228.37.218, at http://transformers.wikia.com. If it's not the same creature, I'll eat my hat. It's doing what it always does as soon as it appears, and I give it five minutes before it starts flinging invective all over the place as normal. It's already started on pleading for "ban policies". --M Sipher 19:57, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, the best thing to do is simply ban each problem account as it shows up, and ignore as much as possible. Please email me at sannse [at] gmail [dot] com if you want to talk this over some more. Thanks :) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 12:28, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unblock me Please

Hey there, I apologize for doing this...again, but can you unblock me at Halopedia? I was unjustly blocked there. The story is, according to me, but you can ask others, is that I was accused of HBot being a vandal bot. There was no proof of this. They banned HBot on Halopedia so I said, rhetorically: "If he is a vandal bot, then ban me". Again, I know you are getting tired of this stuff, but it would be nice to have the record straight. Thanks again...again, H*bad (talk)

As you were informed on IRC, staff have as minimal involvement as possible, and none of the other admins or the any of the community at Halopedia have contested your block. Community consensus is required for bot flag approval and you unfortunately you did not get that approval. And stuff like this: [9], [10] doesn't help you get consensus or help your case for unblocking. --CharitwoTalk 23:55, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't told on IRC. I know that they have already. Look, GPT blocked me for saying a rhetorical statement. Thanks, H*bad (talk)
http://wikia.pastey.net/79415 --CharitwoTalk 00:22, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Must not of seen that. Still my point is still valid. Thanks, H*bad (talk)

Sannse, if you do end up getting involved, RelentlessRecusant told me H*bad said he had a vandal bot that could destroy our 4,000 pages in 80 seconds. I only "[did] the honors", as RR suggested. Ask him or Manticore for logs. Forgottenlord was there too, apparently, as he suggested the pre-emptive ban in the first place. Dragonclaws, who came online before any of the blocks, agreed with them. As I have shown numerous times, I'm not a rhetorical person, so H*bad's use of it was a very bad idea. I am not going to unban him just because I now have that knowledge, because banning him as well is a good idea, and I must congratulate him on it. Sorry to be such a bother... I talked to JSharp a bit aboot it, ask him for details--specifically, the last thing I suggested. --NOTASTAFF GPT(talk)(eating) 00:40, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

By the way, if you check your history, the IP who edited just before me removing all these comments except H*bad's first one edited from a proxy called hidemyass.com, which H*bad has a history of using... I know him well enough to predict him, and based on how he's acted in the past, I'm sure that was him. /me starts whistling and walking away casually like he didn't just say that --NOTASTAFF GPT(talk)(eating) 01:07, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
Without any proof, it is a prejudiced idea. Now then, you have no proof that HBot was a vandal bot, but the original was built from a vandal bot, that's all. Now you accuse me of building another without proof? How is that justice? A preemptive block has nothing without proof. Show me in the programming of my bot that I have vandal bot add ons...oh that's right you can't. Sorry, but this is not a valid reason. This idea is debunked. You, RR, and who ever else have been trying to get rid of me for a while and have been trying to find the smallest thing that I do "wrong", even though I haven't, you will block me. How is that justice? You can't just block someone for not liking them. If you don't like me, then just don't talk to me. Thanks, H*bad (talk)
As I have found out, HBot was not a vandal bot, and that HBad was being sarcastic to GPT when he said "Block me if I have a vandal bot on halopedia" -- {{Subst:User:Sgt.johnson/Sig}} 05:16, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

This block is long overdue. H*bad faking his death and pretending to be his sister informing us of his passing has upset a number of community members. His actions are despicable, and I wholeheartedly endorse his block. -- Manticore (talk) 06:21, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

Wholeheartedly agree as per Manticore. Sannse, ma'am -- HBad claimed to have a wiki bot that could vandalize all of Halopedia's 4000 pages in 80 seconds. There were other people in the channel at the time, and I'm sure I could retrieve logs that document this as well. It is my responsibility as a Halopedia administrator to ensure that a potential vandal bot does not enter Halopedia. When I asked HBad explicitly not to run his bot on Halopedia without community concensus, he said 'I can do it anyways' (I can pull up the exact phrase). Upon this, the four out of five Halopedia administrators I spoke to agreed to block HBot. As for HBad, I believe GPT might have been a little rash in blocking HBad as per his somewhat bemused statement. However, there is an entire list of grievances HBad has committed, including believed sockpuppetry, believed account hijacking, and so on and so forth. I would be glad to speak to you privately with the other Halopedia administrators regarding HBad. Cheers, RelentlessRecusant 08:14, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
I just want to make sure that this is clear, all of this is speculation towards me. None of which has proof, for those of whom have said that I have been rightfully blocked because of all of these "facts". Thanks, H*bad (talk)

Gah, sorry I wasn't around to reply to all this, I'm just catching up! H*bad, as said above, this is the Halopedia admins' decision. And frankly, with your behaviour recently, I'm not in the least surprised they are no longer willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. I suggest you edit elsewhere, and discuss this with the admins again in the future. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 08:31, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

But I didn't do anything wrong. Isn't there something against unjustifiable blocks? I mean you have to be able to keep some type of control over admins of wikis. The only thing that they have against me is my killing myself off. Which I have a good reason for it. If they don't believe me then that's their problems. If wikia can't control what goes on, then why even have staff? I understand what the staff are for, but even you know that they have nothing on me. I can't be an admin of a wiki, where I am banned at the other knowledge base. I understand their problems, but if they have a problem then take me off of the ability to get anywhere on Halopedia. I completely level with them, except for the fact that they have nothing. If they had something on me, like proof, then I would shut up. But since their's nothing, I have to say something. Now sannse, I understand that you aren't supposed to get involved and I agree with that, except their "stuff that they have on me", has nothing to back it up, except theories. I gave up on vandalizing, but they won't believe it. Even before now, this problem has been spawning for a while and frankly I have tried to be nice to them, I have tried everything that I can. I don't want to be the villian/victim of this, but it's come to it. Thanks, H*bad (talk)

[edit] The Norwegian Sims Wiki

The Norwegian Sims wiki is a total mess, and no one is editing it anymore. I want to halp, but i cant delete articles, so I ask you to make me admin, or delete all the articles in the wiki, so my friends and I can make it a good wiki again. http://no.sims.wikia.com/wiki/Hovedside

Is there really a need to delete all articles? It's a wiki after all, it's often better to edit and improve rather than delete. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 08:34, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Log out question

Hi, I think we've spoken on the wikia IRC before but I'm not sure. I have a question which is quite hard to explain, if you don't understand then please let me know and I'll try again.

I usually log in on my computer and I forget to log out. When I go on the next day I'm still logged in, even though I didn't ask it to remember me or anything. I logged in on another computer and I forgot to log out. No one can acess the computer for two weeks, and then they can only acess the Ratchet & Clank Wiki out of the wikias. I'm concerned about somone misusing my profile on that wiki after two weeks. Is there a way to log me out on another computer? If it will log me out on every computer I don't mind, aslong as I can log back in. If I'm not happy in two weeeks time I might ask to be temporarily blocked on the Ratchet & Clank wiki to stop anyone misusing my account untill I can log out, unless there is another way. I might not still be logged in on that computer, as I might be wrong about it keeping me logged in.

Please reply on my talk page on SWGames (The talk link in my sig for this comment) thanks, Hunterj on SWGames|My talk on SWGames

Hi, replied there -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 08:45, 25 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] problem reports widget idea

no need to reply, just stick this in your head/todo bucket.

it would be kinda nice if the PR widget would NOT show tickets marked as "need staff help" since these tend sit for a while

-Uberfuzzy 19:59, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

Would be rather better if we didn't let them sit :-/ let's work on that over the new year, and see what's needed. Jae has got our email flowing well now, so if we can get Report a Problem working, things will really have improved -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:07, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AWB

Hi,

After a little googling ([11]), i've read that you are the person among the saff who was the principal supporter of AutoWikiBrowser. So, are you aware that this software isn't working anymore on Wikia ? The situation is here since many moths now with no apparent progress. I understand that currently there's more important matters like the bugs with the recent update but i've still posted a big comment on AWB's page. I wasn't going to contact any staff this soon, but after seen your involvements with this project... Maybe we can discuss it some at AWB's talk page. — TulipVorlax 06:22, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I was under the impression that it's currently working for Wikia. Philip from Puppets Wikia was using it recently. You do have to be on the access list though, is that the problem? -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:09, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Joepedia adminship

I would like to apply for adminship of the G.I. Joe wiki. I know you're going to tell me to contact the original admin. I did talk with the originator of the wiki, User:Wudstar but he told me he didn't know how to turn me into an administrator. I told him to contact the community staff for help but has not replied to me if he has done so. --Destron Commander 06:31, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

Cross-posted from accidental placement in talk archives. --CharitwoTalk 06:53, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

It looks like there are other active contributors there, in particular NebulanFree. Have you talked to the other active people about who should be admin? Remembering there can be more than one of course :) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:19, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, NebulanFree is a fellow contributor just like me. According to Joepedia's list, the only one listed there is Wudstar. He should be able to turn me into one, him being the wiki's creator, he'd like to but he doesn't know how. Currently, there are no current active admin (Wudstar is but he's been too busy on his own and left the wiki) and since I've done so much to get the site busy and attract visitors. So, I'm now asking for your help. --Destron Commander 14:36, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Forum namespace in fi.wikia

Hi sannse, could you please change forum namespace name (NS 110) at fi.wikia? The current name is "Foruumi", but that's misspelled and the correct form would be Foorumi. Thanks in advance! :) --Jack Phoenix (Contact) 09:49, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

The only part of TOR's message about this I understood was "fixed" ;) It should show as done on the wiki in a few days (the fix is in a future revision) -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:21, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

We've got a vandal attack from IP 66.212.28.34 in FFWiki. We have no admins logged in here so far. Could you help? Blue。 13:02, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

Ahaha, never mind. Sorry to bother you. Blue。 13:58, 28 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Resignation

I ask you, after much deliberation, to take away my admin powers from me on Halo Fanon. I am a vandal. I have vandalized this wiki just by being on it. I have corrupted some of the minds of the community by turning them against the other admins. I am corrupt and I am a vandal. I need my powers taken away immediately before I do anything bad. I thank everyone for giving me a chance to perhaps change, but I can not. Once a vandal always a vandal. I can't be trusted. I can't be anything. I went thinking that I could change, but I can't become better than what I was and am. I am sorry for ever even trying. Thanks for your time, H*bad (talk)

How about you simply don't act as an admin for a while, and then get back to me. Give it a week and we'll talk. -- sannse@Wikia (talk) 22:23, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
I guess a week would be enough to get my affairs in order. I will get back to you on Saturday.--H*bad (talk) 05:24, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
I was given an offer on staying that I couldn't refuse. But I won't be a part of the admin team for a long time, but I still communicate yes, but not use my admin powers. I will discuss everything to you when I can. Thanks, H*bad (talk)

[edit] cookies

i might be stupid but how do enable cookies? reply as soon as possible
