Wikia - creating communities
[edit] bureaucrat flag
Hi, could you please drop my 'bureaucrat' flag on ru.dragonsbloodyworld wiki (preserving sysop flag)? Thank you. Wassily Steik 07:47, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, what's the problem? Something wrong there? -- sannse
(talk) 12:28, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
- There're no problems :) Just because of my inactivity. The project has another bureaucrat which is more active than me... :) Wassily Steik 15:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Guild Wiki movement to wikia softwere
Hey, Guild Wiki has recently been moved to Wikia softwere, one of the things that has changed, is that we now have adverts on the right hand sidebar, instead of at the bottom of the page.
This change, has caused many problems, pages that are designed from the start for a fullscreen width, have stopped displaying correctly, it will require a change of policy (as our signature policy relys on lines of text for screen resolution) and has made many editors angry.
We do not wish to switch to another skin, and the IRC #wikia chat room reccomended that I asked you if it would be possible to change the adverts to the bottom, this would prevent dispute. Thank you for your time either way, if possible, could you contact me at Guild Wiki with any queries you may have. RT | Talk 08:20, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi RT. I'm just back from being away to have a minor operation, and am trying to catch up. I'll talk to people who know more about what's been going on over the last week as soon as they are awake (San Francisco time) and hopefully get a better grasp of the situation. Sorry about the delay! -- sannse

[edit] Aion Sysop
Hey there Sannse,
Wondering if I can be set as a Sysop on Aion wiki? Just that way I can play with the css somewhat and make it look more appealing. :) Daworm 01:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Daworm, I'll get back to you by the end of the day on this one :) -- sannse

[edit] Wikia Helper
Hi Sannse, I have a question. I asked Angela about the requirements for becoming a Wikia Helper, and she told me that you could tell me more about becoming one.
Best regards,
Eu(Talk!Contribs) 19:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. "Helpers" are people who are either doing some contract work for Wikia, or are on official internships with the company. Basically, the way to get that position is to be seen and invited by one of the staff looking for an intern or contractor... although you are welcome to send an application to Wikia for staff to consider. But usually it just means doing great work on wikis and talking to staff and other users a lot. It's similar for "Janitors", who are volunteers who work on spam control and other cross-Wikia tasks. They are chosen from active users with good reputations. That's a more casual position and I keep a mental list of people who might be suitable and interested. I'm not planning on adding new janitors just yet, but in a couple of months I will probably be looking around and talking to other staff about who to add.
- Yes, it does :)
Also though, I was wondering if you could make me a Sysop on the Guitar Hero Wiki. They two Sysops there are away for some reason, and there's a lot I could add, both content- and aesthetics-wise. As of now, I don't have many edits there, but I do have Sysop experience at the Warriors Wiki. I'm not sure if I need a certain amount of edits there, and if I do, I'll start ASAP :) Thanks for all your help!
Eu(Talk!Contribs) 21:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
- In that case, it looks like there are active editors on the wiki. So they should have a say on who becomes admin there. I suggest you try to talk to the community and work out what everyone thinks is best. Then let me know, and I'll click any needed buttons -- sannse

[edit] cookies2
how do you enable cookies? reply as soon as possible.
- Hi, it depends on your browser. If you are using IE, then you need: Tools > Internet options > Privacy > Change the slider to change your cookie settings. You may also need to look at the Security tab, or add Wikia to your list of trusted sites -- sannse

I was wondering if you could please make me a bureaucrat on The Lemony Snicket Wiki. My user name is Asoue1286.

[edit] Bot Flag
Hello. Could you flag User:AnimeBot on The YuYu Hakusho Wiki? [1]. Thanks. DragonBallZ 17:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
- Do you have community agreement for this? Please also check out the page about bots on Help.wikia. Thanks -- sannse
(talk) 17:34, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
- I am the only active user there since I founded it only recently. The flag would be for the wiki to be synced with Wikia ACG, but don't worry about flagging it now though because I am working on another wiki becoming part of Wikia ACG. Thanks anyway though :) DragonBallZ 21:47, 14 April 2008 (EDT)

[edit] We Need More Admins on the secondlife wiki
The situation is this, there is no commumity, because the wikis were merged and dormant. Recently the only active bureaucrat has become involved in an edit war and locked pages with cascade. The new users who have been trying to revive the wiki have stopped editing because of this abuse of power. We need more admins and at least one new bureaucrat. The wiki is blocked until this happens, we can't import material from other wikis, continue the off wiki programming that second life users need to access wikia, nor can we even change the parts of the front page that were locked with cascade.
Lillie Yifu 13:35, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm not sure which bureaucrat you are talking about here. I see Eggy is active, and that he reverted a change to the main page, protected it, and tried to contact the person he reverted... all normal admin tasks. We recommend not protecting the main page, but in the end it's the admin and the community's decision. I would suggest you talk to Eggy about it. Talking to them about new admins is also a good idea, this isn't something you need me for when you have an active bureaucrat :) -- sannse

[edit] Interwiki links
Hey Sannse, how ya doing? Good I hope. Will you insert (or have inserted) the following shortcuts to the interwiki table for http://stexpanded.wikia.com/? Thanks much. (I've added these on my own wikis, so I know they work.)
24 http://24.wikia.com/wiki/$1 arc http://starcadia.sasoriza.us/wiki/$1 (if unavailable, then ap) b5 http://babylon5.wikia.com/wiki/$1 bsg http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/$1 dc http://en.dcdatabaseproject.com/$1 fg http://flashgordon.wikia.com/wiki/$1 help http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:$1 hp http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/$1 ma http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/$1 marvel http://en.marveldatabase.com/$1 mb http://startrek.wikia.com/wiki/$1 sw http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/$1 who http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/$1 wp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/$1
Thanks again! --User:Sasoriza 15:11, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. "sw" is a language code, so is already assigned to Swahili. "help" is also no good, because of the help namespace. We have "marveldatabase" set up already, and also "battlestarwiki", "memoryalpha" an "wikipedia". I know these are longer than your shortcuts, but they are also more obvious.
- We also already have interwikis set up for all wikia wikis, you just need to type w:c:name: . I'm looking into getting that simplified to wikia:name: , but need to check how many old links would be affected (Wikia: is already used to link to Central).
- So it looks to me as though the only one that needs to be added is starcadia.sasoriza.us - I'd suggest that "starcadia" would fit better with our linking plan for that. -- sannse

- just need to type w:c:name: - Right, but a lot of people don't know that; even I have a hard time remembering the syntax on occasion, and have to check the wikia page for refresher. (Dunno why; something about that syntax throws me. Can never remember which comes first, the c or the w.) The other, extra, shorter shortcuts are exactly why we call them shortcuts - "ma": much easier to type (and remember) than "memoryalpha". Same for "mb" (that one we could really use) and the rest. These are shortcuts we use often or are likely to use often; it would be a lot easier on us, hence the request. I understand if this is a problem, if the same interwiki table is used for several wikia; I just thought each had their own, so that these wouldn't affect others. If that's the case and you want to implement only "starcadia" (I'd suggest "arcapedia" but what the hey), then, okay. I like the suggested wikia:name: ; that would make it easier too. --Sasoriza 10:35, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry for the slow reply. I've been talking to one of the technical team, and he thinks it's possible to change over to wikia:name: , so I hope that will be done soon. For the others, we've come up with the suggestion that you use templates as shortcuts. So for Memory Alpha you would type rather than Memory Alpha:article name. If you don't know how to set that up we can help. I'll set "arcapedia" and that will be live the next time they are updated, and I'll let you know when the change to "wikia:" has happened. -- sannse

[edit] Search questions
Dear Sannse
We are students at the college of higher education in Chur [2]. For one of our courses we are testing and analysing Wikia Search. For this reason we woud like to ask you a few questions to get relevant information of how Wikia Search functioning and how the users interact with Wikia:
- How many active, registered users does Wikia have? Are there any graphics available which show the growth of the last few months?
- What's the difference between the User-list and the Profile; how do you get on the user list?
- Are you happy with the number of registered users yet?
- Are there any statistics on Mini Articles: how many are already written?
- Are you happy about what users contribute to Wikia Search? Give they good input (Mini Aricles) and helpful comments?
- What's the percentage of acitive Wikipedia-users?
- What do you think of the idea to link Wikipedia-pages to Wikia Search results? (e.g. you look for "Switzerland" and the user could see a link to Wikipedia where Switzerland is mentioned).
Thanks a lot for you help and best regards, Stefan & Thomas
- Hi, I'm afraid I'm not the right person to ask these questions to. I work on the wiki side of the company rather than search. Probably the best person to talk to is Jeremie who runs the search project. I'm sure he'll be able to help :) If he doesn't notice a message on his talk page, try the search mailing list. Good luck with your project -- sannse

[edit] Monaco questions
Greetings Sannse,
How can I place links at the top of Monaco skins (to the right of the logo) in that vast empty space? Ie. Where's the mediawiki page for editing that? Or is it still in development or going to stay empty?
Also, could you give me some good examples of custom Monaco skins (preferably off Gaming skin) with heavy modifications so that I know how to work the Monaco skin css? -- found some, but now I can't get rid of the 2-pixel border around the Monaco widgets. I would like to know how to fix it.
Thank you. --User:Yunzhong Hou13:24, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
- Are you using an ad blocker? The space next to the logo contains a banner ad, so I'm guessing you are running a program that removes that for your view. But of course links there won't work, because others will be seeing the advert.
- I can't see whether you can remove the border, but I'll ask JSharp to look and let you know if it can be done -- sannse
(talk) 10:41, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi :) To remove the border from monaco widgets set the border property of the widget class to none. Add the following to your MediaWiki:Common.css:
.widget{
border: none;
}

I put a message on Jamie Hari's talk page (he's the admin) but he still doesn't answer. I just want to know what is going on with this proyect, because it's very abandoned and it haves a lot of bad pages.. I want to help, but I don't know where to start.. And there are some pages to delete.. well, I'm waiting your answer here (you can speak in english to me). Playsonic2 • ¡Speak! • 18:29, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't want the bureucrat flag, only the sysop; because I think the wiki needs one active sysop to delete some pages and keep it fine. Playsonic2 • ¡Speak! • 11:26, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Scenery and Fish
Hi Sannse,
Sorry about the title. Actually, I was wondering who I can get to make some changes to my languishing wiki. Specifically, if the url could be changed:
from psych.wikia.com to socialwork.wikia.com
and the name of the wiki could be changed from
Enpsycholopedia to Social Work Wiki
then the name and address would more closely correspond to the site content as-evolved. Naturally, I appreciate untruth as much as the next biped, but maybe accuracy is better in this case.
Option 2 is to just delete the whole thing, but there are quite a few articles there (nearly as many as Depression Wiki).
Hugs, etc.
--Todd Lyons 14:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

What is the URL (such as MediaWiki:Monobook.css) to edit the Monaco Sapphire skin? I can't seem to find it and want to edit it for Star Wars Fanon since it's a bit bland right now. --Victor (talk) 17:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

- Hi, I've had a look, it seems there are pages in מדריך which will be perminantly lost if they are not moved out of the namespace before it is deleted. Are you sure that's what you want? I would recomend keeping מדריך, because that may be linked to the Help Wikia in the future (although it will probably be some time before that available in Hebrew). Forum looks OK to remove, but an alternative would be to translate that, and create a forum like the Village Dump on Uncyclopedia. Let me know what you prefer :) -- sannse

- OK, so this is turning out rather complicated - it seems my tools don't like right-to-left languages! So I'm going to need to get some technical help. But first, let's make sure I have the namespaces right. Don't worry about the numbers, just let me know if all of the namespaces are as you want them.
- On special logos... that's not something that can be done by Wikia - but the English Uncyclopedia worked out a way to do it with their own javascript. You can ask them for help in getting that on the Hebrew version
- On an automatic system to check rights etc... I don't know of any way to do that. A user right like "rollback" has to be set manually, it's not done automatically. You can get information on edit counts from Special:Editcount, but again, that would be manual -- sannse

[edit] Danny Phantom Infobox
I am the editor for the Danny Phantom Wiki. I;m getting off the ground with some help from a few fans. One thing I;m trying to do is create an infobox for episodes. How do I make an Infobox? Markcambrone 00:46, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi. An infobox is simply a table on the top right of the page. To make them easier to add, people often use templates with variables. A good, simple example is the Muppet's template at http://muppet.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Song
- Info boxes can get very complicated, but the idea is to make a template on one page, and then use it on another with variables. The best way to make one, is to find a template that looks good to you, and copy it over to your wiki. Some use /very/ complicated code, so it's best to avoid them, but you should find something useful. You can ask other users for help with this in the Forums or on the Wikia IRC channel -- sannse

[edit] $wgFileExtensions
Hello Sannse, its me again (The Oracle from Custom Bionicles)
If you can please, add the file extension .bmp to $wgFileExtensions to LocalSettings.php of our wiki, Custom Bionicles.
P.S:Crazy-Lihkan38 and Toa Retyk (the other two admins on our wiki) have been gone for a while.Have you seen them contributing to another wiki,or are they on some sort of vacation?I can't really handle the site by myself!(I left a couple of messages to Crazy-Lihkan about other things, but he never replied)
--SethLaughEdits 21:52, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
- .bmp images are not a good think to add to a wiki. They tend to be very large, unnecessarily so. Is there a special reason you want them? It's generally much better to convert to a more sensible compressed format like .jpg or .gif
- On the other admins, I've not seen them, but they could be somewhere... why not try the "email this user" link? Maybe that will reach them? You might also want to think about adding new admins to the wiki. I've made you a bureaucrat on custombionicle so you can do that. Hope that helps -- sannse

- It's much better for those files to be converted to .jpg or .gif rather than uploaded as .bmp - which is very easy to do. All you need to do is open them in any image manipulation program, and the "save as" changing the file type. If you know how to set it to compress them at the same time, that's great, but even changing the file type will be a big improvement in the size of the files. -- sannse

-- sannse

I notice that memory-alpha address has a domain in it http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek Was wondering could I as well I have one by godaddy (Benjeman Washington 03:13, 14 May 2008 (UTC))

[edit] Help with related communities
Hi Sannse, some time ago I came across a way to make the Related Communities box not display when I'm signed in. I now see from Green Wikia that it looks as if I can customise this box which would be good to reciprocate links with them and others, but I'm really stumped as to how to get the box to display again. Hope you can help! Philralph @sca21 16:30, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, I'm not sure about this... I don't recall seeing that box for a while now. Possibly it was an experiment that didn't catch on. Let me check it out, and I'll get back to you -- sannse

[edit] NWN2Wiki going to monaco
Yes please let us implement and change it ourselves, folks changing our skins on us makes our community get defensive which has happened a few times, but i like what you did.
Last time i made a change I implemented it just for my own account so i could refine and test it. Can i do it like this with the monaco you did. This way I can try it for a week or so before I change the default, and others can too. I'll make the larger community aware of this after i get a chance to look at it - this site acts as the real manual for the game so it is very active because of that, and we have quite a few sub communities here as well. I want to make sure each groups leader has a chance to say they like the change.
I think folks would not mind a change, they just need their favorite buttons where they can find them. Pain 20:16, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hello Sannse!
I've been having this problem with a template that the users of the FFWiki had made. We made it and people asked if they could use it for their wiki. We said yes, just as long as the credit us for making it. The other day a user from the wiki that I edit told me about it. He said a user from the Homestar Runner wiki had made it. I go over to investigate. I put the credits on the Template page and they get reverted. I ask the user that put the coding on the wiki about it, my edits get reverted, I ask the person who reverted my edits why he did it, they were also reverted. So I go and get proof and post it on the Template's talkpage. That is also reverted. Then, well look. Can you please help me out? P.S most of them have been rude to me, all except a user named Znex -Azul 21:35, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
- While it may not be strictly proper, copying template code has generally been considered as harmless on wikis. In fact, it's generally considered to be the best way to learn about and develop templates. I can understand your annoyance, as this is a particularly unique template, but I'm not sure this was worth more than a polite request on a talk page to add attribution (and that to the template page, not to the template). If you want to take this further, you will have to contact the admins and hosts of hrwiki - it's not a Wikia wiki, so I can't help with that. -- sannse

[edit] Hello Sannse
Hello Sannse, It's been a long time since I was active in wikia. And now, I think, the community to which my wiki "karl May" should belong to is finally ready to get active on this wiki, I hope so, after such a long time to convince them. And I will be adding new material soon. Sorry for my long non-active period.
I see now wikia has changed. I hope for the better.
But the community ask me to protect some of the text inside it. The text I mentioned will be e-Books (at least there will be three) and they want me to protect that in such a way that the text cannot be copied right from the website and people can only read it. Further more, can they be protected with passwords and if people wants to read it they should ask for the password first. Can it be done? If the password cannot be applied, it doesn't matter, but the copy-paste protection is somewhat a must. This is a request from the community itself.
And from now on, I only plan to manage Karl May Wiki, so I would like to give the other wikis to people who want to use them.
Thank you
Agus elex 2005 07:57, 23 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'm sorry that's not possible, not only technically, but also because all content on Wikia must be under a free license (the GFDL) which means that people are allowed to copy and re-use the text. If the text is not suitable for this license, then I'm afraid it's not suitable for Wikia -- sannse

[edit] Bot flag
Hello Sannse. I only recently found out that local bureaucrats are not allowed to assign bot flags. Could you please set the flag for DrennanBot on the Rappelz Wiki? It is going to create articles from an offline database of monsters in the game, using a reasonable amount of throttling of course. The bot is based on pywikipedia. Thank you, Drennan 15:01, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, that should be no problem.... can you just confirm that the community on the wiki agrees with this bot being used? Thanks -- sannse
(talk) 17:07, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
- As far as I know, the community at the moment consists of Najevi and me. I agree with the bot being used and Najevi seems to agree with it as well, or at least he didn't actively protest after I tested my bot and asked in the forums what naming conventions it should follow. If you insist, I can start a poll, though. :) Drennan 17:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

- I've put a new extension on to finalfantasy.wikia that allows you to do some of this - it's at Special:Protectsite. It won't stop user creation, because that's common to the whole of Wikia, but you can restrict editing for a while. Each protection only lasts for a maximum of 24 hours, because this is supposed to be for emergencies, but that should help you out. One bug: if you restrict moves to logged in users, it will actually be admin only (hopefully that will be fixed soon). Hope it helps! And let me know if I can do anything else -- sannse

Hi, can you let me know of any other examples of images breaking? And were they working when first added, or broken from the start? For example I had a problem with some images at this template. I must to give there 49px instead of 50px (original width of these icons is 400px). I also remember the article Ukrajina, where one image in the gallery was wrong, but now it displays correct, without any change of the parameters. If you mean merging of the [edit] button with the text, it happens at all pages, where are more pictures one below another. This is probably on all wikis except German Uncyclopedia. [edit] Re: creatureswiki.com
Hello. I decided it would be more prudent to respond here to what you posted on Wookieepedia than continue the discussion there. I am curious- if Wikia's only intention was to prevent cybersquatters from purchasing the domain, why did they not simply encourage us, the leaders of our community and the originators of the name "Creatures Wiki", to purchase it ourselves, by which means we could actually make use of it and forward it to the site? As is, the people who wrote all the content on the site and maintain its integrity were not told a thing about it, and furthermore, the domain is simply being held (it does not even point anywhere!) because of its status as a commodity, rather than being put to use.
All of this sounds like the very definition of cybersquatting to me. Was Wikia intending to give us the domain later? Selling it to us, perhaps? (which definitely would count as cybersquatting.) Somehow, based on the fact that we were never told about this practice, I doubt it. ElasticMuffin 17:50, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- I think the first part of the reply is that this really wasn't considered any more than routine housekeeping... nothing that warranted any big discussion. I seem to recall it being mentioned at least a couple of times in the past on wikis, but I can't recall enough about that to point to the discussions. And we certainly don't consider it cybersquatting, because these are wikis on Wikia we are talking about. Where I think we may have made a mistake, is in not pointing these URLs to wikis. But possibly it's simply more important to just make sure they don't lead to sites like http://www.wikiaa.com/
- As for selling them to you... to who? The community is the people who use the wiki - that amorphous and ever-changing group can't own a URL. An admin could, and they could wander off - as people do every day. Wikia does a lot more than provide server space for our wikis. We provide technical and community support. We promote wikis and try to ensure they grow. We work on search optimisation, and experiment on way to increase the number of people finding the edit button, and look at what features are most likely to ensure wikis grow and thrive... and we buy any URLs we think should be protected. -- sannse
(talk) 19:55, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- That's all very nice, but are you willing to bet it will hold up in a trademark court or domain arbitration? You know how rights are established in a mark. We - the members of the Creatures Community, especially myself - are the ones who have worked our butts off establishing the Creatures Wiki as a site worthy of note. We are the ones who have advertised the service in interstate commerce. We are the ones who have obtained the rights to use much of the content of the site. You are the people we have chosen to host our continuing efforts up to this point. If we choose otherwise, you may soon find yourself in a situation where you cannot legally continue to host the site without radical modifications that would cost more than the site is worth to you. --GreenReaper(talk) 22:48, 7 June 2008 (UTC)
- Are you serious? Buying up relevant domains with high searchability and considerable value to a particular community and holding them without informing the people who run it is just "routine" and warrants no discussion? I'm sorry, that's not supporting the 'community', that's just acting in your own interests.
- I have been here maintaining the Creatures Wiki since the beginning and witnessed Wikicities' transformation from a friendly place that hosted wikis, to a company that seems to think it is cool to slap "Wikia" over everything and call it a community. We resisted being labeled a "gaming wiki", we resisted linking to other totally unrelated wikis, and we fought off the first attempts to convert us to other themes against our will and without community consent. Wikia seems to have come to the incorrect conclusion that it owns the communities that it relies upon for money; in reality, it merely provides them a place to stay. When your contributors leave, all you will have left is the content, and anyone can have that. It's free, after all. We are not your assets that must be protected, we are your customers. It is neither your job nor your business to own this domain and I will not hesitate to warn others about these tactics going forward. ElasticMuffin 04:34, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but on the RuneScape Wiki, you recently blocked a user who went primarily by "Thisguyowns", "Jimihendrixowns" and "Jaghater(number here)". I am a sysop on the RSW, but not the RuneScape Fanfiction Wiki, which is mostly made by the more irregular/sometimes irresponsible users on RSW. Recently (not sure who did it) the username block was applied to Jaghater. However, he has repetedly been contacting me on RSFFW, even after I asked him not to (because I don't trust him). This has gone to the point of him calling me and RSW "corrupt" and me "a fool". I have removed his comments, but he keeps coming back for more. In and out of the RuneScape game, he has been contacting me, swearing that he and his other names are actually "different" people, when we obviously have more than enough evidence to block him on all the Runescape wiki's variants. In fact, he's openly admitted to socking on BOTH wikis, and they haven't blocked him, simply because he doesn't vandalize pages. If at all possible, I'd like to be sysopped on the RuneScape Fanfiction wiki so I could end this once and for all. In short, he's still socking, and none of us on the RSW's IRC channel believe a word he says about "his brother" and "his cousins little bro". -- 20:37, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Commons
Hey Sannse,
Is it possible to have the aoc wiki setup as a Commons for the server wiki's. w:c:cimmeria-aoc - w:c:aquilonia-aoc - w:c:cimmeria-aoc - w:c:wiccana-aoc & w:c:hyperborea-aoc? Can it be set that they can share images and templates? Or is it better to just have the templates run locally??
Thanks, Daworm 00:41, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know if this would be the best thing for the server wiki project. We have templates on each wiki that differ from one-another, yet have the same names. The server wikis also have a unique setup for copyright information, and we closely monitor all content that is uploaded to them; losing the ability to control that input may lead to inconsistencies. Before we make any decision like this, those of us running the server wiki project would like to have a chance to further discuss this situation. --TarrVetus 02:27, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- Understood. I only suggest images at least as it would make images easier rather than having it on two wiki's. If it's one one, you simply enter the file-name and it'll use the image on the main one, if you don't have a local copy. Maybe not templates, but images could be a slight saviour in this regards. I'll leave it in your hands to discuss further with others then TarrVetus. Daworm 02:34, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

The other account is Jklmcw, but I promise it's me.
Thanks,

- Hi. Wikia helpers are contractors and interns working for Wikia. It's quite a formal position, rather than a volunteer one. We generally either invite people to work for us, or they apply to something on the Hiring page. Maybe not what you are looking for? :) -- sannse

- I'm not looking for more Janitors at the moment. But when I do, I look for people who are very active across Wikia, and who are super helpful and friendly. There's a great page about the type of people I want to find at http://freenode.net/catalysts.shtml - but, as I say, i won't be adding anyone to the program for a while -- sannse

- Hey, I just read many user pages of janitors and then the janitor Wikia page that tells everyone what janitors do and it looks like the janitors are on strike or something! I don't know if this is spam or not but if the janitors go on strike or quit you know where to find a new one as long as I can work from home! --Jklmcw Leave Me a Message! / Email Me! / See My Contribs! - Yes, some of the Janitors are away at the moment... maybe permanently, I don't know yet. So I'll wait for things to be clearer for now. But there are many way to volunteer on Wikia... mainly by just being helpful. There are always questions on the Forum, or in the IRC channel, or just new wikis that could do with help and encouragement. Anything like that is wonderful, and it's people who are seen helping out in that way that are likely to be asked to be Janitors or Helpers :) -- sannse

[edit] Bug?
Hi I was wondering whether you could help me with a small problem that I have found on the Lord of the Rings Fanon site. In the forums when the 'Add a new topic' button is pressed the specified 'preload' doesn't load; it seems to preload it if the template field required isn't given - but of course the template just shows a lot of 's. Anyway I hope you understand because it's difficult to describe; so thanks in advanced - any help is appreciated. Thanks!-- KingAragorn talk LOTR email 20:23, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Unblock for me?
I know that when a user is infinitely blocked, both his IP or hex or something and his username/account are blocked. Well awhile back, User:Darthtyler requested a permanent ban on Star Wars Fanon and so I did him the favor of doing so, and just today he asked me to unblock him. Therefore, I did unblock him, but I am unsure if his IP is still blocked or not. So can you please check and unblock it if necessary? It'd be much appreciated, thank you. --Victor (talk) 01:13, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Transformers Wikia backup?
Howdy! It looks like the Transformers group may be decamping from Wikia. (Against my better judgement...) And for my sins I've been assigned to look into how we get a database export. I have no idea how up-to-date the 'all pages' XML is... but the images archive for transformers.wikia.com has grown only 30 megabytes since I last checked it 11 months ago, so I seriously doubt it is up to date.
Danny suggested I make it your problem ask you about it, since you've apparently helped communities with that before. How do you go about getting actual up to date DB downloads? This page seems to be the only official word on the project, and it's singularly unhelpful. -Derik 16:53, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Derik. The text database should be very up to date. The date of the copy is on the download page, so you can see exactly when it goes up to. I will have to ask for images to be updated to ensure that's current, and I won't be able to get that done instantly, as you can imagine we are running around trying to make sure everything goes smoothly right now!
- But I would urge you and the Transformer community to give yourselves time to get used to the changes, and us time to iron out the wrinkles.
- I'd be interested to see the discussion on this by the way, obviously we want to learn from all this, and hearing what the Transformer community is saying will be useful. Could you link me to the page? Thanks -- sannse
(talk) 17:35, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, that is what I'm advocating. (I am big fan of letting someone else shoulder the logistical load and letting fans dedicate their time to what they actually like doing instead of tech-support.) I'm keenly aware that reproducing Wikia's functionality is not an out-of-the-box Wikimedia install, but the community voice seems to be leaning heavily towards exodus, even among the admins. If you want to chime in- please do so. It'd probably be good for them to interact with someone from Wikia who is not Danny-Toughpigs. The general feeling is that Danny grossly misrepresented himself at pretty much every step of his interaction with our community, which really set the stage for the current Wikia-toxic atmosphere.
- So the XML archive is live (or close to it,) and to get an up-to-date image archive, I can just arrange it with you? Good to know. -Derik 18:19, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

Hey Sannse with todays upgrade to monaco 3.0 i have updated Dofus Wiki main page and i cant do the big square Advertise, only the rectangle, i mean not that i hate it but want to know if i can use that space reserve for the square one?

And, no, I'm afraid it's unlikely there will ever be more information on the URL change than the note I gave you. I'm sorry -- sannse

[edit] Space for ad
Let me tell you a secret: See the large empty space on the left? (there <) The larger the page, the larger the empty space, so... Why not put ads there instead of placing them INSIDE THE PAGES? That was the most stupid idea I ever saw.
Wikia could create one ad box in that empty space that resizes to the page size, and the larger the page, the larger number of ads. What you say? Of course, the ads inside article MUST be removed before doing it. --_12:11, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Question about copyrights
A user is asking me if he can upload anonymous content to Ficciones, he says, anonymous works, like Robin Hood. He says he could upload some current anonymous stories, but I am not sure. Maybe GFDL does not allow that, as he does not own the rights to them. I think he is wrong, is he? David 20:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
- This is a bit complicated, but I'll give you my understanding of the issue. It's not about whether the content is anonymous, an author has copyright over his own work regardless. But some stories are considered traditional, and so no one holds the copyright. They are also likely to be so old that any original author's copyright is long expired... they are in the public domain. So such stories can be used on a GDFL project. Something like Robin Hood is definitely traditional... but a particular telling of the story may be copyrighted. So Hollywood can make infinite Robin Hood movies (the overall story is public domain) but each movie is copyrighed. -- sannse

[edit] Atheism Wiki needs sysops
Uberfuzzy says there are no sysops on Atheism Wiki. I told him that I’m willing. I patrol Atheism Wiki daily. I feel it would be good if I could deal with vandals instead of reporting them. There is a continual small vandal problem with this Wiki.
R Fitzroy hasn’t said anything but he may be interested. He started a good page on blocking policies and wrote most of it. He’s discussed what sysops should do intelligently. He wrote other good material.
Bob M is a sysop on RationalWiki. He’s been to Atheism Wiki recently. I don’t know if he’s interested. Proxima Centauri 10:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Can you start a discussion with these and any other members of the community? If everyone agrees, then it will be great to make the three of you admins. I see you don't have a forum at the moment, let me know if it would help for me to set that up. -- sannse

I don’t think the others have been back since I last contacted you. The only changes were one case of vandalism which I dealt with. I’ve been patrolling regularly and checking for vandalism. The others may have checked for vandalism as well. I don’t know. I will start a discussion on their talk pages. Proxima Centauri 08:49, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
R Fitzroy is willing to be a sysop but can’t make a regular commitment. I’ve contacted Bob M at RationalWiki. He says he has other commitments. I can easily patrol Atheism Wiki at least once a day. I can patrol more often if there is heavy vandalism. By the way before I discovered Atheism Wiki I was considering suggesting a new Freethought Wiki. I’m keen to see Atheism Wiki succeed. Proxima Centauri 18:34, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
- OK, what I'll do is make you both admin and bureaucrat, then you can sort out who else to add. Don't forget, you can give them both sets of right if you like, and I often recommend that in cases like this. Good luck, and let me know if you need anything! -- sannse

[edit] License tags
Because we already have all CC-BY-SA tags as templates in de.foto, it is not necessary to add one there. Thank you anyway. --Eva K. tell me about it 19:32, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi, the template I added is part of the replacement for the Mini-upload feature - the new one is more flexible, allows uploads from flickr, Mediawiki Commons, or your computer, all without leaving the editing page. It also asks if you want to tag your image with this template, which is why I've added it Wikia-wide :) You should see more on this soon -- sannse
(talk) 20:15, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- That may be, but we took over our own system which has been proven on de-wikipedia. And in a wiki which deals with photography, we want to have our own photographs mainly, not those from flickr or whatever photo archive. Finally I'm not interessted in using templates in English in a German wiki or to translate all that stuff, nor does anyone else in our wiki. --Eva K. tell me about it 22:08, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps if you already have a template for that license, you could put it in that page? Or you could delete it until you see the new feature and decide what to do. It looks like the new image upload application will call that page, so it will be somewhat broken if there's no page there. Of course, it's up to you what you do :) -- sannse

- I asked Avatar what is going on there and he explained me that Wikia is developing an addiotional upload feature. AFAICS it is not a complete redesign of the standard upload which I was afraid of. [edit] Templates
Hi Sannse, can the templates in Wikia be just like templates in Wikipedia. I mean, can I just import the templates from Persian Wikipdia to Persian Wikia.--BlueDevil Talk 15:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- There are a couple of things to consider... Wikipedia's templates often have many sub-templates. If you want the template you will also have to copy all sub-templates. They also sometimes use css, which is in the site css page and will need copying over too. And finally, Wikipedia uses a feature called HTMLTidy, which we don't use. Sometimes that can mean that code that works there will break here (and vice versa). So if you are sure you have everything copied, and it still doesn't work, then you will need to check the code carefully for problems caused by that. Hope that helps -- sannse

[edit] Dofus project name
Well me again with this... I have been giving 2nd thoughts to it to be more sure... on the reasons well its not that i hate the url we have but its a bit messy... we having the links issues (resolve with a clear cache client side), other specific link issues like the ones of report problems but most dont frequently read it so there no biggy there... but what its killing me its the javascrips we have no one at our wiki most of the JS was installed by me, i have a notion but coding its another story i have ask for JSharp help, he already repair the code but then i notice other stuff that where not working so im still stuck with that, i compare codes between the place prior to asking help and there was not significant difference, and if we have to customize every code we get from other wikis to out wiki due to the URL difference its going to be tedious for the me (since im the one that does all this things in our wiki) and to JSharp the one i will be having to constantly annoy... Also lately that i have try to start our politics, guidelines and other project stuff at the wiki im having the expression issue if i say Dofus needs your help we are referring to the wiki needs your help but as a random user they understand Dofus game designers need your help like many game wikis that have names so similar to their game we are working hard to differencing between the game designers and us (and i think i could compare that to wikia trying to differentiate from wikipedia as a clear example) and i guess that another name bit more catchy like Dofupedia or something like that would acknowledge that so i want to explore the option and would like to know what would require to do so?. --Cizagna (Talk) 19:58, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Cizagna. Changing the name of the wiki is no problem. I can do that for you with a small settings change. But that doesn't need to change the URL. For example, Wookieepedia is at starwars.wikia.com, but the name is known and shown on the site. So I think the problem you describe might best be solved by the community choosing a new name, without worrying about the URL. Then I can set the namespace, the titlebar and the SITENAME variable to whatever you choose -- sannse

Hi. I'll answer here, but if you would all prefer to move this to WikiStad, that's fine. I see you don't have a full forum there, so let me know if you want one set up - I've just done one for http://spoorwegen.wikia.com so you can have a look there to see what it's like.
So... I've looked at the complaints, and at some of the pages involved, and to be very frank it all looks like you are simply bickering. I think that needs to stop, and you need to start working together constructively. You are working out how to live in your imaginary land of Libertas ... well, that involves living together, resolving your differences, and finding ways to come together and create your land. So I ask you all to take a step back, look at what the actual issues are, and try to solve them. Leave aside arguments of who did what, or who blocked who, and decide between you how this wiki should work.
One other thing that needs discussing, is the wiki's policy on multiple accounts. Some fiction wikis allow these as different "characters" in the world they are building. Some don't. It would be good if you could discuss this and then, depending on what you decide, for anyone using more than one account to stop.
Thanks all -- sannse

[edit] Two languages, two wikis?
I've been doing some work on the Sega Wiki's main page, and I was going to add the Spanish Sega Wiki (SEGArcadia) as an option on the Languages widget we get on the Monaco toolbar. I was peeking at some other wikis and all they seemed to do was add a es: to the bottom, so I tried that. Sega Wiki interpreted that as a page, so it tried to take me to http://sega.wikia.com/wiki/Es: instead of http://es.sega.wikia.com/wiki/Portada. I remember I registered Sega Wiki a while back, but I never registered the Spanish version, so I'm guessing someone else did that, which seems to be normal for a lot of other wikis too. But my question is: Am I not able to make a language link because they were somehow registered as two separate wikis or am I not reading the help section correctly? Thanks in advance, Wikada - Talk Contributions 18:59, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Wikada, interlanguage links are set up on request, rather than automatically when a wiki is created. So I've set them up for Sega and es.Sega now. It sometimes takes a while for the setting to show on-wiki, so please let me know if it's not working in the next 24 hours. -- sannse
