[edit] Trying everything
Hi,
I'm trying everything I know how. It is still taking the full two minutes to navigate.
Also, although I have the options selected in my preferences, I am not being notified by e-mail of changes to the site.
Michael David 01:50, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Have you tried disabling javascript? Also, if you are in Windows, do you know how to edit your hosts. file to disable specific domains? --Splarka (talk) 02:59, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have a friend who helped me set up my computer, but who now lives in the state of Vermont. I e-mailed him and he sent me the following specs regarding my computer:
- Power Mac G3 running Mac OS 8.6 with either 256 MB or 512 MB of RAM (random access memory) Your browser is Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.1.7. You've got the most recent versions of most browser plug-ins that will run under your OS (e.g., QuickTime), except maybe Flash -- I don't remember where we left that, but I do know that the version you have is pretty dated.
- I hope this helps.
- Michael David 03:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- And you only have this problem on Wikia, and not Wikipedia? Can you try Uncyclopedia and see if it exists there too? --Splarka (talk) 03:32, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Both Wikipedia and Uncyclopedia (which I just tried) are instantaneous. I also have a multitude of other databases & websites which I use all day in my research - all of them are quite fast in responding. ---Michael David
- The only difference between wikia and uncyclopedia, in offsite scripts, is <script type="text/javascript" src="http://4.adbrite.com/mb/text_group.php?sid=121274&br=1"></script>. So, this most likely is your problem (if it is an offsite loading problem). Can you get to this url ok? --Splarka (talk) 04:08, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. The link above was instantaneous. Splarka, I need to sign off for the night as I have an early appointment tomorrow morning. Perhaps it would be better if we continued this conversation via e-mail. Remember, from the time I can access your responses, respond to them, then save them, can take a much as 8-10 minutes. I greatly appreciate your help. I am very anxious to work in The Psychology Wiki. ----Michael David 04:37, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, that was the last thing I could think of that could cause several minutes of lag only on wikia. You might try contacting
jasonr at wikia.com, and pointing him to this conversation (and maybe he could try altering some wikia to attempt to track the problem). Also, I check my email only a few times a day, so it would probably be slower than this method. --Splarka (talk) 05:52, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

On http://projects.wikia.com the subpages don't work (that means, they don't link to the parent page).

- Other example: http://projects.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Waldorf_Projects/The_website

- See m:Sub_pages. Subpages are only enabled by default in user namespace. They can be extended to other namespaces on a wikia per request (with community consensus). --Splarka (talk) 20:33, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I'll make the request, then. Thank you. --Let's 13:04, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Gaiapedia (Gaia Wiki)
Thanks, Splarka for your reply (Sorry about confusing you with Sannse). I do request the bot on the non sysop (GaiaBot) for a start. I can use my own account as you suggested for the mostpart. But I do have one point that I may need a Bot with sysop capabilitys.
I have gotten a good ok from the majority of the community (majority being out of the few people we have), and we intend to get 3 namespaces. Item, NPC, and Map... the issue lies within the Item namespace. Now that I have gained the knowledge of using a bot, I intend to do the movement of all the items from the old namespace to the new by the use of a bot. Along with this the bot will be used to convert links aswell so that all the item links will point to the new article in the Item: namespace. One of the reasons we've decided on moving Items out of the namespace is to stop possible conflictions between article names and Item names, allong with removal of all Items from the Main namespace to give the random page feature accurate randomization. Thus, to make this work right, we need to delete all the old Item pages after all the links to them have been fixed. The problem is that we have a estimate of over 100 items listed, or at least enough to make deletion by the users that we currently have tedious for the fact that we also have to change the format of these articles and we have other things to do arround the wiki. So the only way to delete these old redirect pages is using a sysop, but since we have over 100 the use of a normal sysop will take over the entire Recent changes page overthrowing any changes that we are actualy working on.
dantman 08:51, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll see about that when the time comes. Thanks for the flag on the normal bot, I'm trying to write something at the moment to add the itemimage template to our item images. dantman 10:31, 5 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] StargateWars Wikia
Hi Sparkla.
Angela referred me to you. I wish to set up a featured-article star system as seen on Wikipedia. How should I go about doing this?
Thanks for your help. Please reply on my talk page on the StargateWars Wikia (the link is in my signature).

[edit] Charinsert // Bot
Sorry for these 2 new questions, but I do not know who else I can annoy >_<...
- As asked here, could the CharInsert.php extension be installed?
- On this Wikia of which I am bureaucrat thanks to you ;), how can I set an user as a bot, in order to avoid looong recent changes list with all my contributions that other users can't hide (but they can hide bot contributions)?
Thank you! — Ethaniel 08:28, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'll add the CharInsert to the dev to-do list. To create a bot you have to ask a Special:Listusers/staff (which are global) to do it. Note that the bot flag should be set only on trusted users/robots/scripts, and only if they spam recent changes (the community should be consulted or at least notified ^_^). --Splarka (talk) 08:32, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for the CharInsert request! My edittools file is ready for days :D.
- Concerning bots, aren't they specific to a given Wikia? I didn't know they were global all over wikia.com...
- Don't you think I am spamming recent changes just with manual modifications ^^? And soon, I have to automatically create some thousand pages >_<...
- I haven't yet created this bot account (but I've already chosen its name ^^), should I do it before asking a Special:Listusers/staff to flag it?
- Thank you for all your help! — Ethaniel 13:44, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- I mean the staff are global, so the list of staff is the same everywhere. Also, bot flags should almost never ever be mixed with sysop/bureaucrat/staff flags, unless there are thousands of deletions/bans to be performed (and then only temporarily), so create your bot and then tell me who to set the flag on ^_^. --Splarka (talk) 20:17, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- My bot is now created, and her name is Boten Anna (yes, “her” ^^). Considering the activity on this Wikia, there will be, er... perhaps 1 ban per year, so a bot is useless fot that :p. But considering that Anna will do thousands of creations, I hope I won't have to do thousands of deletions >_< (but for every creative task, I'll first test with only less than 10 pages, of course ^^). Thank you very much \o/ ! — Ethaniel 14:18, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- Just a question, will Anna be considered as a bot only on fr.dofus or on all wikia.com? As I plan to make and maintain (with Anna) interlanguage links between all Dofus Wikias (but I have first to make a pretty interlanguage template, since interlanguage doesn't exist >_<), it would be fine if Anna is considered as a bot by other Dofus Wikias. Thank you! — Ethaniel 15:28, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, "bot" has two meanings on a wiki. In the first sense (that of an automated script) she will be a bot on whatever wiki you run her on (and she will be logged in to all of wikia, with the shared user database and cookies). In the other sense (of being hidden on recent changes) she will only be a bot on the wikia she is set +bot on. If you want her to be bot on the other dofus wikia, ask the other admin to ask a staffer to +bot her ^_^. --Splarka (talk) 21:44, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Dear splarka,
Please compare this two pages
The talk page of: w:c:id.karlmay:Templat:Infobox and the talk page of: w:c:starter:Template:Infobox.
I already copied everything and still get this strange result. Please tell my why this is happening.
Thank you,
--Agus elex 2005 16:04, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
- There was an extra line return in w:c:starter:Template:Pipe. The <noinclude> has to be on the same line. I changed thusly and it worked. But I've changed uses of it to w:c:starter:Template:! as this is the generally used name for this template (here and at wikimedia: m:Template:!). --Splarka (talk) 03:09, 2 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Favicon problem in opera
in the newest opera version the favicon doesn't work, when i go to the link directly i get this:
Found The document has moved here. Apache/2.2.0 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.0 OpenSSL/0.9.7f PHP/5.1.4 Server at furry.wikia.com Port 80
with here being a link to http://furry.wikia.com/images/6/64/Favicon.ico
- That is a known problem with Opera and uploadable wiki favicons. The devs are working on a way for it to be a symbolic link instead of a 302 Redirect. --Splarka (talk) 03:24, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
- Alright, i've reported this page to opera's team so they can check on what's happening. :) --Xenofur 14:57, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

- StargateWars Wikia
Hi again. Is it possible to transclude an external page into one of my pages? Specifically, I'd like to get the text from here into this. Thanks. ZPMMaker 06:52, 8 October 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, wiki's do not natively support external transclusions, and I am not aware of any extensions that could do this as you request. What you'd probably have to do is write a bot to do it periodically. --Splarka (talk) 06:09, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
- Righteo. I'm not really good with bots, so is there a page detailing how to make/use them? Thanks for your assistance. ZPMMaker 00:48, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
- Never used one myself, but check the WP page for some general information: Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Bot. --Splarka (talk) 01:03, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] DPLforum issue
Hi Splarka. Some days ago, we talked about a problem with that extension on #wikia. You referred me to Algorithm [1], he referred me to Meta [2], and the developer of DPL referred me back to Wikia and an archived discussion with Sannse [3]. Finally, Sannse told me that that discussion was probably one you took over from her. Isn't that great how all ways lead back to you? :)
Anyway, long story short - while I can simply remove that column for the moment, it's not that important for what I have in mind, the problem seems to be with the Wikia installation of either Mediawiki or the DPL extension. Just thought I'd let you know... ;) -- Cid Highwind 13:44, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] templates... ugg
Hi, I'M NOT HERE! But while I'm here, why is the adoption template too high on Judaism? Usually it's wider and thinner. Can you fix it? Thanks -- sannse (talk) 13:04, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
- That was due to the width of the div being locked at "25%", which when floating next to the visit template forced it to break text into three lines. setting it to 22em seems to have fixed it. --Splarka (talk) 23:09, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SgW Wikia vandal blocks
Hey there.
I personally have little tolerance for vandals, and each vandal is given at least one warning of an indefinite block before the block is made. However, User:WarEagle has been an absolute pest; he has received numerous warnings for various problems.
I shall open communications with him, but I believe that a ban shorter than a month would not be sufficient.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
ZPMMaker (16081) 16:09, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Also, thanks for reverting this, which I suspect is the user in question, as the only other contribution by this IP is on WarEagle's talk page. I'm not going to jump to conclusions and start blocking this IP as well (mainly as I suspect WarEagle has a varying IP address), but to be honest I see no reason why I should negotiate with him IF he resorts to vandalizing from another computer/IP address. ZPMMaker (16081) 16:24, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, and I've reduced his ban to a month. Haven't spoken to him yet, though. ZPMMaker (16081) 16:24, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- I ask him to log in and sign his posts, and stop avoiding the ban by being logged out, before I agreed to speak on his behalf. --Splarka (talk) 03:46, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Cheers. Also, is that link below meant for me? ZPMMaker (16081) 05:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

- While I'm here, how does one write CSS for the wiki and then upload it? Is there a particular filename that I need to upload it to? I have recently learned the magic of CSS and would like to attempt to customize my wiki. Ta. ZPMMaker (16081) 05:28, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Skin customizing
I wanted to customize my wiki and they forwarded me to you and all that stuff... I'm a n00b at css stuff could you help please? I have 3 related to the page/discussion/history etc. flaps:
- they should be "soft", like on svt.
- They should have that font they use at idverse
- when the page exist, they should be red and when not they should be grey.
Thanks, and sorry for my poor English. Smiddle 16:31, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- "they should be red" <- Do you mean, the border, the text, or the background? I assumed you meant the text (for this example):
/* action buttons; rounded corners */
#p-cactions ul li, #p-cactions ul li a { -moz-border-radius-topleft: 0.4em; -moz-border-radius-topright: 0.4em; }
/* action buttons: verdana font */
#p-cactions { font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; }
/*action buttons: colors */
#p-cactions li.selected { border-color: #ff0000; }
#p-cactions li.selected a {
background-color: #ffffff;
}
#p-cactions li a {
background-color: #ffffff;
color: #ff0000
}
#p-cactions .new a {
background-color: #dddddd;
color: #888888;
}
#p-cactions li a:hover {
background-color: #ff0000;
}
- Let me know if you meant something else. --Splarka (talk) 04:23, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I ment the text. Thanks! But it doesn't work for me, but that's probably my system. Or that I put it in the wrong file. I didn't know if it was .js or .css... i tried both, but placing it in both makes it not work(?) thanks anyway. I'll try purging, refreshing and all that stuff and try if it works. The wiki is Swedish Nintendo by the way, and I wanted to make it look like the Nintendo logo a bit. Smiddle 13:33, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- It works for me (and as css it goes into MediaWiki:Monobook.css). Try clearing cache more ^_^. --Splarka (talk) 01:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Language template
Hello, could you please check this template test page and tell me what you can read on it, so I know whether it works or not ?
Actually, I'm trying to build a template that displays different stuffs depending on the user language. Is there a variable that can be used to find out this user language and use it further ? Thanks. Orteil 14:15, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- I see:
Vous êtes français, donc vous voyez cette phrase.
- There is no magic word or variable for user language (only {{CONTENTLANGUAGE}} for the content). I asked the developers at Wikimedia about this specifically, and was told it would either: 1) not work with cache 2) break cache (and stress servers), so most likely it will not be added in the near future (as they would just have to disable it).
- In a future version of mediawiki, however, there is a javascript variable for this. Now if we could just upgrade... --Splarka (talk) 01:32, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Interwiki Templates
Is the interwiki templates problem a problem with the MediaWiki software or with Wikia's implementation of it? It's been broken for weeks now and I'm not sure who is responsible for correcting it. Thanks for any info. Eddie 19:01, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- It is wikia's implementation I believe. Try it with the {{wikicities:}} prefix, as that sometimes works. It is on the to-fix list. --Splarka (talk) 19:07, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks. It's good to hear it's on the to-fix list. The reason I don't want to use wikicities is because I have too many images to change and once it's fixed I would have to change them all back again. I can wait. ;) Eddie 21:18, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Image Transparency
Here is a strange issue. Transparency in images works inconsistently. Note how the background of the stars on the Wikia main page should be transparent but are not. I managed to find a PNG on Wikia that does work but apart from a different DPI (which has nothing to do with transparency) I cannot figure out why it works and others do not. I set up w:c:delphi:Image:Info_transparent.png to demonstrate the problem. Please have a look and see if you can figure out what I am missing. Thanks again. Eddie 21:18, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- The taskbar image (Image:Gold_taskstar.png) shows transparently fine for me, even when thumbnailed. The other one most likely works for you as it uses one palette value for transparency (that is: it is not using a 4th (alpha) channel for transparency, which was badly supported in some browsers). See Wikipedia:PNG#Transparency_of_image. Are you using an older MSIE perchance? --Splarka (talk) 21:28, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- Addendum: Try testing your browser on this site for PNG support. --Splarka (talk) 21:38, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, yes indeed. I am using the evil MSIE-6! That explains it. Thanks for the pointer. Eddie 21:44, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] lt.runescape
Hi, can you do google ads in lt.runescape wikipedia transparent, i think, you can do it, when $bg_collor be blank. Thank. --Rtz 11:56, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
- The google_color_bg defines the color of the ad's <body> tag and if left undefined (view the page source of a wikia page) they are defined as white:
//google_color_bg = "FFFFFF";
- (two slashes mean it is commented out) produces:
<body bgcolor="#ffffff" link="#0000ff" alink="#0000ff" vlink="#0000ff" leftmargin="0" topmargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">
- so even if we leave the parameter blank, it is defined as white. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the ads are placed in an <iframe> (which is not so much a layer, as a hole in the page).
- Memory-alpha has their ads defined thusly:
google_color_border = "CCCCCC"; google_color_bg = "333333"; google_color_link = "FFFFFF"; google_color_url = "999999"; google_color_text = "CCCCCC";

- Oops, my fault. Capitalization error. Should work now. --Splarka (talk) 12:44, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Wow, that was fast! Thanks again, Splarka! This rocks, and you rock!--Dakkoth 13:00, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
One last thing, same issue: I've noticed that the actor/actress section is not showing up. I looked at the code but it seems to be no different than the rest of the code. Could you please help again? Thanks in advance :)--Dakkoth 13:23, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
- Should be fixed now? --Splarka (talk) 13:26, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A Question
Since you don't like it whan I claim you as a "errand boy" I can understand that, my question is can I still ask you for help even if anything happens to OP Wikia? And how do I aviod treating you like an "errand boy" in the future?
(Joekido 10:50, 31 December 2006 (UTC))
Nothing, like I said it's just a question. Remamber when Kuyaza blocked us and I came asking for help, you came and help so after that I threw an hissy fit on him, later you gave me a 1 day block with a comment: "You are not a part of this solution and you don't swear at Kuyaza like that nor claiming me as your errand boy "
That was December the 12th yet I felt that it be hard to ask you again so I just like to clear things up here.
Yes I know it's sounds confusing but I need to know

- Just: do not ask for staff intervention if you are not prepared to deal with the consequences for any misdeeds you may also have been guilty of, please. --Splarka (talk) 11:12, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] DynamicFunctions and RandomImage Extension
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/DynamicFunctions
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:RandomImage
I'd like to use both of these on the Pikmin wikia, does wikia use the same copy of mediawiki for all its wikis? Do I need to request somewhere at wikia that these extensions be installed? Discordance 19:55, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the help. RandomSelection works great for what I was wanting to do with DynamicFunctions (just after #rand). I was hoping to use RandomImage to display any random image on the main page (borrowed idea from marvel database), specifying images would be a little exhaustative for that. If thats the only option itll get the job done though. Discordance 02:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
