Wikia:International

Wikia - creating communities

Yeah, whatever.
Wikia is a multi-lingual company and we're hosting wikis in more than 180 languages. While it's true that most of our visitors come from the US or other English speaking countries, there is still a huge amount of people who aren't able to understand English well or even at all and also people who just prefer to read and use their mother language.

But our resources are not infinite - so we need your help to localize and enable our new features in your language. You are able to unlock new feature for your wiki and help other people who speak your language. Join us and help by adding translations!

Check how complete the translations are in your language on the chart. Can you help to turn a column green?

[edit] Problem reports

Please only add any bug/problem which is related somehow to localization issues or bad translations!

  • The Norwegian written language has two different forms, nb and nn. However no is usually used as nb (for example on Wikipedia). Thus, all no translations should be duplicated to nb as well. Ose TalkContribs 17:49, October 13, 2009 (UTC)
    • Would it make sense to switch all nb wikis to no? Angela@Wikia (talk) 23:41, November 23, 2009 (UTC)

[edit] How to translate/activate new features

  1. Choose a feature from the list below which is not yet translated
  2. Click on the xx messages link
  3. On the following page you will see a list of all messages needed by this feature
  4. Enter your language shortcut into the box on the top of the page and click the button
  5. A new page will be created. Inside the table translate the English messages from the left column to your language and enter the translated message into the empty column on the right side.
  6. If there are a lot of messages, don't forget to save your current work from time to time!
  7. If the feature also has a help page, consider translating this too if there is a help wiki in your language.
  8. If you're done, change the translation status indicator for this feature from red to green (or leave Avatar a short note).

[edit] Automated wiki creation

Wiki creation screen
Wikia has always been a place for people to document the topics which they are passionate about. Until now, the wiki request process has involved Wikia staff members evaluating each wiki request and accepting those which they believed would attract and sustain a healthy community. The new wiki creation system puts the power back in your hands and allows almost all requested wikis to be created.

All requested wikis will be automatically created and ready to edit within minutes. Users will be given a link to begin work on the new wiki before leaving the wiki request page. Wikis which might have been turned down in the past because they were of a personal nature, about a small group, or about a topic which we believed might not have enough of a broad appeal to warrant a full wiki, will now be given an opportunity to shine.

[edit] Blog article

Typical blog article
Wikia blog articles are articles written and attributed to one person that can be voted, commented on, and organized into a listing like a typical blog. They are different than a typical wiki article in that they are not intended to be a collaboratively written pieces of content, but instead a single user's composition. The idea is to create more of a community feel for a wiki, and give users more outlets for their endless creativity.

[edit] WikiStickies

WikiStickies will appear on MyHome.

The feature is still under development. So far, 19 messages are required.

If you have access to the Messaging Wiki, please add translations there. If not, please place them on the talk page or add them on a wiki where you are an admin and then email Angela to have them transferred to the Messaging Wiki.

WikiStickies in English refers to sticky yellow notes such as Post-it notes. You may want to change the name to something that means the same in your own language.
