Wikia - creating communities

Over the next few weeks, we will be releasing MediaWiki 1.14 across all of Wikia. This is the latest stable release of the MediaWiki software which runs all of Wikia, and contains a number of enhancements and bug fixes. Here is a list of a few of the things that you can expect to see:

• The Image: namespace has been renamed to File:; however, all existing Image: links still work properly.
• The [[File: ... ]] tag now accepts a link parameter, which allows you to link an image to a page or URL.
• Sysops can now move images and files, so it is no longer necessary to delete a new file to upload it under a different name.
• Special:Random will now show a page in any content namespace rather than just in the main namespace.
• Thumbnails are now shown in a file's history.
• Special:WantedFiles and Special:WantedTemplates were added to show files and templates which are used on pages but do not exist on the wiki.

We do not anticipate any major problems; however, as with any major upgrade, some issues may appear. If you have any questions or notice anything that is not working properly, please add a note to the forum page. We'll be watching that page closely and fixing issues as quickly as possible.
