Wikia:Style guide

Wikia - creating communities

Jump to: navigation, search
This is a style guide for the Central Wikia. For more general wiki style advice, see Wikipedia's Manual of Style.

[edit] Description pages

Each Wikia has a description page on this Central Wikia.

Template:New wiki should be used when creating a description for a new wiki.

Most descriptions will start with "The <whatever> Wikia"... followed by a brief description of the topic. The description should describe the wiki to someone with no knowledge of the subject area. For example, rather than writing "a wiki for AFL", the description should say the wiki is for information about the American Football League since "AFL" has multiple meanings. Linking to Wikipedia articles to clarify the topic is often useful.

The name of the wiki should be in bold text.

On English pages about wikis in other languages, the description should start with the English text, and be followed by a description of the wiki in that wiki's language. The non-English text should be indented and italicised.

The description can be used to explain the wiki's goals, especially when there is a need to highlight how the project aims to be different from existing Wikimedia projects.

The description should link to other pages on the Central Wikia wherever possible. "See also" can be used immediately below the description to point to related Wikia, though the categories serve this function as well. Interlanguage links to other Wikia on the same topic can be used. For example, the Portuguese Futebol page can link to the Spanish Futbol by adding [[es:Futbol]] at the very end of the page.
