Wikia Re-Launches Question & Answer Site

Wikianswers Aims to Be Most Trusted, Comprehensive and Only Freely Licensed Q&A Source on the Web

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., February 2, 2009 – Wikia, Inc., the company that brings together millions of people to create and discover engaging content on every topic, today announced it is re-launching a completely overhauled Question & Answer (Q&A) wiki – Wikianswers at http://answers.wikia.com Harnessing the power of the wiki format and Wikia’s community of tens of thousands of active contributors, Wikianswers aims to be the web’s most trusted and comprehensive source for answers to people’s questions on every imaginable topic.

Wikianswers is the only Q&A site where anyone can contribute – no registrations are required as with other similar sites – and where contributions are freely licensed, meaning that people retain the copyright to the content they post.

“Many other Q&A sites such as Yahoo! Answers are flawed because your question never really gets answered – you just get lots of different opinions that you must sort through yourself,” said Jimmy Wales, co-founder and Chairman, Wikia. “The wiki format, and we believe the Wikia platform specifically, are perfectly suited to give you the best answer to your question by harnessing the knowledge of Wikia’s huge community to quickly respond and continuously refine answers for ever-greater accuracy.”

In just over a week since it was released with a new more user-friendly redesign, Wikianswers has experienced an explosion of interest and tremendous traffic volumes. More than 10,000 people have visited, contributing more than 30,000 questions and answers on topics ranging from cars, food and health to money, technology, travel and much more.

“We’re now throwing the doors of Wikianswers open to all, whether it is to get an answer to a burning question you have or to share your knowledge on whatever topic you’re knowledgeable and passionate about,” said Mr. Wales. “We believe that Wikia’s more open, freely licensed approach will resonate with our community because it is truer to the wiki spirit, and Wikianswers will do better than corporate sites that use rigid content licenses to take away rights from their contributors.”

Wikianswers is an extension of Wikia’s mission to organize the world’s information by empowering the community to create the most comprehensive and trustworthy resources for finding and sharing information online.
