From Narutopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

This Policy outlines how to use Naruto names on the Narutopedia, and the reasoning behind the outlines.

Contents

[edit] Terms Used

  • Western Order: Using the Given-name then the Surname.
  • Eastern Order: Using the Surname then the Given Name.
  • Western Listing Order: Using the Surname then the Given Name after a comma (,).
  • English name: The name as translated into English and normally used on English Television (e.g. Might Guy or Choji Akimichi).
  • Japanese name: The name in original Japanese (e.g. マイト・ガイ or 秋道チョウジ).
  • Romanized: The name in original romanized Japanese (e.g. Maito Gai, or Akimichi Chōji)
  • Extended Romanized: The name in original romanized Japanese with symbols extended into their alphabetical forms (e.g. Maito Gai, or Akimichi Chouji)
  • Short Romanized: The name in original romanized Japanese with symbols converted into the alphabetical character which looks similar to the symbol (e.g. Maito Gai, or Akimichi Choji)

[edit] Outline

  • Names in articles should be in Western Order
  • An article's title should be the character's name in Western Order
  • The first occurrence of a character's name on their own article should use the {{translation}} template to list out the character's English, Japanese, and Romanized.
  • Redirects should be created for the Japanese, Romanized, Extended Romanized, Short Romanized, and the various nicknames of the character.

[edit] Reasoning

See also: Discussion on the Topic and Wikipedia's Reasoning

[edit] For using Western Names

  • The Narutopedia is a western English encyclopedia.
  • An encyclopedia is about it's readers, not it's editors.
  • It makes us compatible with the Wikia Anime Project (The project we are part of)
  • It makes us compatible with Wikipedia and the Wikipedia Anime and Manga Project (A good source of potential editors)

[edit] Against using Eastern Names

  • It confuses the majority of our readers.
  • It puts Japanese text into an English article.

[edit] For using names from Dubs

  • The majority of readers will be more familiar with the dub.

[edit] Against using text from Fansubs

  • Fansubs don't translate the full text from Japanese into English, they only do part of it.
  • Fansubs don't use trained translators.
  • Fansubs don't have access to the actual script of the anime so they don't know the actual Japanese text.
