Article of the Week

The Mission of Glad Tidings was a small chapel also used as a community centre in Coronation Street in the 1960s.

Historically, it was used by a Christian evangelical movement to preach the good word, and in working class areas like Weatherfield, full of factories and hard living, Mission Halls were more common than churches.

The 1960s was a turning point for Glad Tidings. Its only full-time resident, Ena Sharples, lived in the vestry, and struggled to keep the spirit of God within the halls, as other Missions were being disused and torn down and Glad Tidings was more a place for parties than religious services. Ena was fighting a losing battle and the Mission was demolished in 1968.

In 2004, Norris Cole thought the Kabin was haunted by the ghost of Vera Lomax, Ena's daughter who had died in the vestry in 1967, which stood on the site of what was now the Kabin's stockroom.
