The CharInsert extension allows admins to place character insertion tools into MediaWiki:Edittools, which is displayed below the Save buttons.

See Wikipedia:MediaWiki:Edittools for an example of how this can be used to add often-used text, and special characters which might otherwise be difficult to type into the edit box.

Try it out: edit the sandbox. Underneath the edit box, you'll see:

Insert: – — … ° ≈ ≠ ± − × ÷ ← → · §

Wiki markup: #REDIRECT [[]]

Try clicking these links to place characters or commands into the edit box.

If you're having problems with CharInsert, please make sure that the special characters you have added to MediaWiki:Edittools are inside <charinsert></charinsert> tags.

We strongly recommend adding CharInsert tools to MediaWiki:Edittools, but for very common characters you might choose to add them to MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning or to MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning2 so that they appear directly under the editing area before "save page" and other buttons.
