Betty Ross is the love interest of Bruce Banner and the only daughter of renowned military general General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. After the Hulk's creation, Bruce and Betty split up. Ross is a cellular biologist, who is able to work with Bruce Banner on a cure for his "condition".

In the 2003 film, actress Jennifer Connelly played Betty Ross. In a interview, Connelly remarked she was attracted to the role by way of director Ang Lee. "He's not talking about a guy running around in green tights and a glossy fun-filled movie for kids. He's talking along the lines of tragedy and psychodrama. I find it interesting, the green monster of rage and greed, jealousy and fear in all of us."[1]

In the 2008 film, Liv Tyler played her. Tyler was attracted to the love story in the script, and was a fan of the TV show, because of the "humanity and what [Banner] is going through".[2] Tyler and Edward Norton also spent hours discussing Bruce and Betty's life before he became the Hulk.[3]

Character traits

According to the 2008 film co-writer Edward Norton,

Betty has the totally unique quality of being able to look at Hulk and still see Bruce. Everybody else sees this horrific force of rage. And she basically still keeps looking for her friend in there and she ultimately is the only one in the film who's able to connect with him by relating to him as Bruce.[4]

Relationships

Betty Ross and Bruce Banner were romantically involved in the past. 3-years prior to the film, when Banner first became Hulk, they split up. Since that time Betty has tried to move on, eventually becoming involved with Leonard Samson. According to actress Liv Tyler,

[Betty and Bruce] are real star-crossed lovers. They are two peas in a pod. They share so much in their hearts together, but also in their work together.[5]

Behind the scenes

  • In order to film the scenes between Betty and Hulk, actor Ed Norton would stand on a box in front of Liv Tyler, while a crewman held up a dummy head. [5]
  • According to Liv Tyler, there were many schemes for making the scene where Hulk carries her away realistic. The original idea was to have her carried by a mechanical arm. Eventually she was carried by two men, to more accurately represent Hulk's width. [5]
